To ALL who read this in the year 2024 and later: if you have tried everything and nothing worked it, this is what fixed that DISK WRITE ERROR (and a RESUME (updating) not working) in my case. I am going to post this under several videos about this problem, for I have not read this "solution" online. I shut down Steam. I went into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\depotcache. After saving them to my Home folder in Windows (just to be sure...), in this folder I deleted all the files that end with *.manifest* I restarted Steam, hit the RESUME bar -- and "TESV: Skyrim Special Edition", which had this problem, started updating (more than 1 GB). What a relief!
Thank you so much! The first step fixed it for me. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video for the public. First time i’ve come across this problem
Thanks for the video! The disk write error problems only started a couple days ago, was at 90% on what im trying to download so it went back to 0 lol. Hope it works fully now!
First of all sorry for late reply. Disk write error is such a broad error, it could literally be anything, I hope you will manage to get your issue fixed.
Thank you! None of these suggestions in the video has helped, but I read some of the comments and one of them from you said "Try deleting the userdata folder" and it worked!
It seems we had a similar problem tho i've just this second fixed it so ill mention everything i done personally 1)Reboot 2)Verify Integrity of game cache 3) Updated my Graphics Drivers 4) Turned off my antivirus 5) Changed Download location from UK Manchester to Ireland (or anywhere close to your country) (I dont know which one of theses solved the issue or if it took multiple but thats everything i done that helped get it working now)
I tried everything in the video and it's still not working. I keep getting very slow verification on all games, and the issue goes away if I download on another drive. Problem is, I can't move games to another drive when they need an update and they won't update on their current drive.
Sorry to hear it didn't work 😔, I am currently working on a video and gathering the best solutions and compressing everything into one video so that the viewers will be able to solve the issue in nearly 100 % of the cases. Stay tuned!

Try opening properties for Steam, go in permissions, set full control for all accounts, change settings for all users, run as administrator and boom restart Steam and it'll work!
I tried everything on this video and elsewhere and NOTHING WORKED, then I went through the folder and found two mod files (for me it was the Empire Total War All factions mod) sitting in there, I deleted them and it worked. So if you are the same as me, try that.
That's a really nice tip. Often, this error messages are poorly phrased, and thus, a variety of sources can cause the issue. I am glad you got it fixed! 😊
I play Skyrim and everything was fine yesterday. I start my PC, launch Vortex and it just tells me Skyrim SE does not exist. but all the files were the same. wtf. I try reinstalling it, disk write error. I DIDNT DI A THING. WTF. I just changed my disk and it worked. But I'll have to move all my mods. I know many thiings wont be as they used to. I wanna cry.
After trying the last suggestion, I received the message "missing file privileges". Download will not even start now. Will remove and reinstall game, then update. Update - Game would not reinstall. Had to restart computer, and then reinstalled with no issue. Maybe I needed to restart after some of the suggestions before deleting game. If someone is trying the steps suggested here, I would recommend that you restart your computer after each suggestion. Just to make sure you don't run into the same issue that I did.
It honestly didnt help at all, ive tried everything, reseting to factory setthings, using this tutorial aswell as other and it hasnt worked at all, everytime i try to download a game i get the disk write error
What about deleting userdata folder in Steam/Program files (x86). This file contains cached info about games settings that defer from default and configs. If you play CSGO or any competitive game I advise against it since you will lose personal settings but if you play on default then it should not matter. You can also copy the folder to desktop and remove it in there and see if it works and afterwards if it doesnt paste it back in. Let me know if that is of any use.
Try opening properties for Steam, go in permissions, set full control for all accounts, change settings for all users, run as administrator and boom restart Steam and it'll work!
Have you tried uninstalling the game completely? Also, you can go Steam -> Settings -> Downloads and then change location of download server. That is usually what helped me. Choose a random one at first to see if anything changes. Verifying integrity of game files if you already have the game installed is another option. Let me know if you have tried these. 😊
Alright. Ive done everything you have recommended for me. The game I've been struggling with is 2k23. I was playing it fine just last night, and now that I wanted to play it tonight, it isn't working. I've tried everything, I dont know what to do. I have more than enough storage on my hard drive for it, so I dont know what the problem could be.
You can go to Program Files (x86) -> Steam -> userdata and delete userdata folder. In userdata you have all the configs for games, like preset resolutions, keybinds, anything that deviates from the default settings. Deleting this often helps because some files and code in there might be corrupt. Another thing, although perhaps too obvious, did you try to uninstall the game and reinstall it and repair the library folder afterwards? Steam -> Settings -> Storage -> select the disk (C: or D:) -> three dots -> Repair folder Also, one more question. Does this occur only with that game or any other as well?
@FoxsterFox Try opening properties for Steam, go in permissions, set full control for all accounts, change settings for all users, run as administrator and boom restart Steam and it'll work!
This game specifically inteferes with anti virus system from Windows. You need to disable it to complete the downlod and then turn anti virus back on. You can also try: Press Windows key + R Then type: %ProgramFiles(x86)% and find Steam>steamapps. In this folder find 0 KB files in size and delete them. Shut down steam and restart. Shut it down via Task manager. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task manager. Look for Steam (32-bit) and right click End task.
@@constaaaaa748 No, disk write error is Steam specific error. Steam games like the one you can download from Steam have special files that can cause this. From another website, this would not be a problem.
Hmm, maybe try deleting "userdata" folder in Steam folder. Or disabling Windows firewall if error occurs when you start downloading. Other than that trying to Clear library folder instead of repairing might work. Just shooting suggestions at this point. 😒
@@leono8790Try opening properties for Steam, go in permissions, set full control for all accounts, change settings for all users, run as administrator and boom restart Steam and it'll work!
Doesnt work. Also only happens if i tried to download halo reach on mcc, and i tried download battlefield/halo 3 worked fine. Weird but i think it has to do on installation corruption?
hey, I've tried all the steps you're showing. But my steam still can't download a new game. It keep stops downloading and showing same issue "DISK WRITE ERROR"
I have a couple of suggestions: 1) Task manager (right click on Steam 32-bit -> End task), then press Win+R and type: %ProgramFiles(x86)%. This opens Program Files(x86). Go to Steam. Right click userdata (in this file is cached info and garbage data) and delete. Restart Steam. 2) Verify integrity of game files. Library-> right click on that game -> Properties -> Local files or Updated files -> Verify integrity of game files. Let me know if that helped by any chance.
THINK I'VE FIXED IT!!! I had Disk Write Error, tried everything including deleting userdata folder, nearly lost all hope. Then... in my properties for Steam, go into permissions, and set full control for every account shown. I've just done it now and Forza Horizon 5 is finally updating! I'll see if it also works for my GTA IV and Valheim, and if so I'll come back to update you all!
@JOHLumLums Right click the icon on your desktop for Steam, and enter properties there. Not within the Steam application, from the icon on your homescreen 👌
Yes, this is the error a lot of people are having issue with. It doesn't seem to work for everyone because the issue is to broad and there could be multiple sources of issue.
@@Guide4Ever i found my problem, i tried to download to another file currently at E: formerly it was at D: so i believe it is my drive problem, my question is, do i need to change my ssd or can i repaired it?

Hello, none of your shown ways helped me fix the problem. I also watched several other videos, tried reinstalling steam, deleting userdata folder, accesing full control to all accounts, disabling firewall and antivirus and nothing helped. I was so excited to play Forza Horizon 5 and I cant even download it...
I am so sorry to hear that. I gave it my best in the video. The issue is so general that it has many sources of problem. It could be literally anything. Did you try shutting down Steam using Task manager and then searching for Steam in windows search, then right click on Steam (App) and choose Run as Administrator (you give write access that way) and then try downloading!
@@Guide4Ever nvm I fixed it myself Apparently a vpn I had was stopping the update because it thought it was a virus. I deleted the vpn because it was also giving me popups and I installed the update
Hey, unfortunately, this is one of the nastiest errors out there. A lot of things could cause this. I am still coming up with more solutions to upload the more detailed tutorial in the future. I will let you know if I manage to find anything.
