Dr. Fariba Donovan, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona, and Faculty Member of the Valley Fever Center for Excellence in Tucson, presents her thoughts and perspectives on Coccidioidomycosis, a soil fungus that produces a variety of different pulmonary and non-pulmonary human infections in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. Dr. Donovan begins her presentation by discussing the epidemiology of Cocci, including the regional areas of high endimicity and typical environmental exposure risks. She then further defines the typical signs of mild self-limited "Valley Fever" and differentiates this from disseminated forms of the infection. The diagnostic work up of Cocci is then reviewed, and she then describes patient treatment, outcomes, and prognosis. Lastly, Dr. Donovan comments on the risks of endemic mycoses on patients on the newer immunomodulatory agents.

I received a valley fever diagnosis in Feb 2022, this was after not responding to antibiotics for chest congestion. I had a chest X-ray that showed a cavity lesion on lung. I had a Ct scan and then a long needle biopsy which confirmed valley fever. Still taking anti fungal drugs and blood testing. Another Ct scan ordered in 2 months, this will be number four. I have been referred to a thoracic surgeon and infectious disease doctor. I still cough up yellow mucus on a regular basis. I’m over 75 and was very active prior to the valley fever diagnosis. I had to give up racquetball because of severe fatigue. I’m hoping that the anti fungus drug will help over time and I can return to an active life.

cough on and off for 3 weeks. black spots off center of field of vision, it spread from my lungs to my eyes very quickly, I'm a very healthy 31 y/o male who farms in the san Bernardino desert. the retina specialist said looks like coccidiomycosis on the back of my eye. Body aches, headaches, red dots on feet appeared for 2 days at about week three. I have seen about 10 doctors who just prescribed antibiotics and steroids, it was very hard to get a diagnosis thank god for the retina specialist and the red dots on my feet. Currently starting intraconazole.

7 years and I'm struggling to get a diagnosis. The doctors seem to know very little about fungal infections. The lab cultured for 5 days to say nothing there. 4 Times. 2 different hospitals. That's after it popped up on the outside. Before that I was told chronic fatigue. I don't know where to go for treatment. 🙇. My brain is bleeped out. So tired.

Thanks for the info. I've been suffering for a few years. Missed diagnosis. Finally on anti fungl meds. I was at the gym. I felt like my lungs dropped and they started to burn. X-ray shows pneumonia. 2 months of treatment with no healing. Next CT scan, they went to lung cancer. I then had a conci test. Come back positive. I can see how the Healthcare community can get it wrong, and do unnecessary procedures and or possibly unnecessary surgery. Scary

If you monitor your video here. I was hoping to get to speak to you about my father dying in September 2021. I almost died in July 2020. After moving his Arizona home to Michigan.

I have been infected for almost a year...it took 9month until I get diagnosed with Cocci at ER, I missed opportunity to detect it in early infection. I blame my PCP doctor and 2 pulmonologists...they prescribed me unnesessary antibiotics.
