The new dash itself may not cost any extra money, but some of the non-stock gauges it can display do. Most are priced fairly reasonably, but for instance the tire air pressure gauge costs around $760 USD.
Very informative Andy. Thank you for explaining this so well. I’d still rather have the W900 or T800 gauge package. I hated when the odometer went digital. Basically cuz as my kids regularly tell me- I’m ancient. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kenworth better build a new factory just to build T 800’s and W 900’s exclusively for when people that always bought Pete ‘s with the old school dash jump ship and move to KW
Very well said. Just like the pickups. Its so much easier to integrate everything. And like you said, dashes have been electronic for years. It has been forever since a gauge, was actually a real gauge, hooked to a cable or wire, hooked directly to a sensor. It was always just a fake (electronic) gauge.... Also from Kenworth's side of things, it is great for them because they just have to turn on the optional gauges. Instead of changing the dash and adding physical gauges. Which maybe lead to a cheaper upgrade, if you wanted to add something down the road.
Thank god honestly that Kenworth wasn’t putting the digital dash in the W900 and keep it looking good and classic and old school, Peterbilt is ruining the 389 with the digital dash so I believe Kenworth W900 sales will go up!!!
Some of the environments that KW trucks like the W900 and T800 are quite brutal for digital systems. Some is okay like the SmartNav (for those who want it), but not to the extent like the digital dash. Also, up in Canada, the workhorses like the W900 and T800 are KW's competition to the Western Star trucks like the 4900, 4800, and 6900's.
@@stephenroberts4895 yeah I agree, my dad just got a brand new 2022 W900 and we haul wood chips at 95,000+ pounds and bumpy mills and roads in West Virginia, but I feel as if Kenworth sales will go up because they aren’t putting the digital dash in the classic truck like Peterbilt in my opinion is ruining the 389 with the digital dash
People buy the 389 or w900 because of how they look. Not based on how the truck tells them the speed rpm or any of that. This new display won't have any effect on sales. It's just something different guys running around crying the sky is falling.
So born way back in dec of 1961! I got to ride with my Father in a GMC Astro! Then a K 100 in 1974 then a K 100 in 1978 that I later drove myself. My first brand new Truck was A 1984 W900B! I have never own my own but if and when it will be a Kenworth!
Sir Andy !!! Have heard & seen on some other videos ,,that there are problems with the electronics on ALL brands of Trucks when the weather turns COLD & Freezes for exp. ::the ""DEF" System Sensors for 1 !!!! Is ""KW"" doing anything different to help take this issue away like relocating these sensors to a place where they are more protected from the weather ?? ALSO ,, The Fuel /Water separators are located outside of the frame rails as the need to be for servicing & inspection ,,, but need to have a protective shield mounted to the frame in front of them to deflect the COLD wind from hitting them directly when driving down the highway !!! Seems like the Truck Manufacturers would have done this years ago !!! Maybe some input from your perspective would help especially in the NORTH climate where you are !!! Just MY Opinion !!!! ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!!
Thanks KB... nothing that I've read from KW on the location of the sensors. We honestly haven't been having too many issues in the last few years with DEF problems. Not like we used to anyways.
I like the idea of a digital dash, and I like a lot of the features shown, but I sure wish it fit a little better on the dash. The square screen in a rounded hole in combination with the vent stuck on sideways makes the whole thing look kinda... unfinished. It wouldn’t be as easy to manufacture but I wish it had two “analog” speed and tach gauges on the outsides since those are displayed all the time anyway. Two big gauges and a narrower but taller center screen would fit that hole a lot better.
@@AndyTheKenworthGuy Yeah it's not bad, just not great either. At the end of the day it is just a truck, most drivers probably won't notice or care, but if I could afford a new T880 I would want the option for something a little more familiar looking.
I missed the cutoff, I have a new T680 being built for me in June and no way out of this hideous dash I'm being told lol I love everything else about the truck though so I guess I'll tough it out. Got 12 actually gauges spec'd on the right side so I guess that will work but they really need to still offer that current dash model as an "upgrade" for us that prefer actual gauges
Hey Andy Trucker Josh Said to check out your Vlog. Thanks for giving him a ride. I enjoy Trucker Josh and also Super Trucking Dan. I thought I would check your channel out. Good looking Kenworth Trucks. Keep up the good work. Yes I did Like and Subscribe.
American trucks are getting a little bit of european styling with those displays, and even we dont like it much, it takes a while to get used to, I've got to say, kenworth had done a great job on their display, in Europe volvo has done a great Job, i liked that one, mercedes... No thanks, MAN i personally don't like it, but I guess DAF is gonna come up with this as well later this year since its also part of the paccar group, I guess it's going to stay, I'm thinking about what happens when that display stops working, then you've completely lost vision on what your truck is doing
Hey Andy good video. I've gone on Kenworth site and watched all the videos on it. To be honest I think this is my favorite KW. I haul reefer and heater and just normal dry vans. So I think this truck would actually be best option for me. Do you think shift products would be able to do some awesome things to the next gen?
Hey Daniel, we are in discussions on what to come up with on it. It's on my radar for sure. The old models are alive and well but they are not going to be forever.
In my Honest Opinion. I have a feeling this is going to backfire. I like my old clusters. I have driven one with this dash in the dark and even on the lowest setting the Glare is ridiculous. I hate it!!!!! Which raises questions for me. What if these dashes short and go blank? No speedometer or anything? What Saftey has Kenworth come up with to combat this? There is a lot of what ifs if I was going to buy one. I love the W990, but if this is the way Kenworth is going… I guess 250,000 would go elsewhere. I’m not a fan!
The shift/Jake stalk on the right of the wheel. Pull towards for up, push away for down. Why would anyone want to occupy two hands when one will suffice.😎 Best wishes all
It has a paddle shift. The purpose of a paddle shift (IMO) is for speed of shifting not comfort. Keep both hands on the wheel while going 200 mph and shift. Not likely in an KW.
Hey Andy I'm wondering why Kenworth Australia doesn't have the W900 maybe you'd know? They have the T909 which is the closest you'll get but it still ain't no W900. I've been dreaming about W900's on yah channel for well over a year now on several RU-vid accounts haha. Ever since I was kid I always wanted to leave New Zealand for American trucks. The W900 has always been a childhood dream of mine, one day hopefully I win the lotto and you can build me a custom left hand drive W900L.
I'm actually not sure. Paccar has different regions globally and offer specific models for each. For example in North America you have KW and Pete. In Europe you have DAF & Leland. In Australia you have DAF and KW.
Back in the early 90's Kenworth and Pete had a digital dash in the .they looked Kool back then.but it didn't work out very well a lot of failures back then 2500 for a knew dash back then. Then the company that made them went belly up I hope these are better. With all the miles and terrible roads let's see
Great synopsis of the new dash. You mentioned that all the gauges on the 2.1 meter cabs are (and have been) digital. Is that the case on 1.9 meter cabs as well, or are those still analog?
@@AndyTheKenworthGuy Andy, what quite a few do not understand, is that the gauges tell the computer what gauge they are, and the computer tells them what to display. The wiring harness does not determine what gauge goes where. Best wishes all.
LOVE the new dash....HATE your overhead angle shots! Maybe it's just me, but looking down at the back of another man's head is disturbing. All kidding aside, the angle isn't flattering or helping your video out as it makes a "personal" talk with your viewers no longer personal as it shows you talking to a camera from a weird angle. Maybe switch it to the other side where it shows your face and not the main camera? or just eliminate that one entirely and stick with just two angles, which is more the norm and less distracting from the content you are trying to present. Cheers!
I don't understand why north American truck manufacturers are behind that aspect. If you look at Scania, Volvo, Mercedes and Man etc has been making trucks with the integrated dash for quite a few years now.
You have to remember that trucking, in North America, is one of the last redoubts, of the oooold timers, I expect some to wish they where still driving 40 mule Borax teams.
Nothing I've been told yet, but it is integrated with the wingman fusion for side of vehicle detection. If I get the info I'll cover it in future video.
Hey kenworth guy how are you doing I should be getting my w990 in the middle of April will have the new dash or the old dash maybe you might have a answer for me thanks very much for your videos 👍👍👍👍have a world best day
Technology is awesome Since the country is going to electronic logs maybe they could incorporate that into system from the factory as an option No separate screen for logs
That would be awesome ! I would like to see them add a on board digital scale too! And if people start to ask for it I'm sure they will find a way to integrate it!
Can i just get a new 1973 K100 small bunk 192 inch wheelbase 350 bc cummins 13 speed 390 rears on 11R22.5 rubber on Alcoa's. I do like the disc brakes. Dual 120 pa tanks and a wet kit.
Wow so if one of the old gauges goes down , it's one gauge , now if the new Gauge goes down the truck will be F*$# , yes that's much better ?? It's not a Dash it's a Computer and they do Crash , I did Edit , I'm Not driving with my Grand kids on the other seat , just so I can work the Dash
Hate to say it. But not a fan of new digital dashboard. Too much computer/digital stuff. How much you want bet that after 1 million+ miles on cold Canadian roads here. It won’t be working anymore. Known fact computer don’t like cold wether or cold environment. Especially here in Alberta Canada. Come on Kenworth. You should NOT be forcing digital dashboard. It’s WRONG. Just because your higher up say they want the change. DOES not mean customer do, and ppl who drive the trucks. More ppl are going to go old school gauges, old school trucks, becasue it’s proven be MORE reliable vs newer Unreliable computer crap. just like how they trying force more big trucks to go Automatic/Automated transmissions. Manual transmission are already being dying breed in most cars and trucks. Big rigs will be last vehicles that have manual transmission. If truckers/customer had full choice of digital or old school analogue, ( not matter what truck model). Then wouldn’t be issue. Maybe Kenworth should THINK of this. I see a lot truckers selling newer trucks buying older 389/w900 older trucks just keep older dash and get away from crap DEF system. Eatons fuller 13-18 speed should be the standard too. It forced the “drivers” to be more connected to the road/the truck and be more aware of road conditions.
Meh, some does most don't. A person's preference. If you where thinking the old guages are more reliable. Sorry, like Andy said the guages are driven by a digital signal from the cab computer, for the last 15 years, in some cases. In some +20 years. Thing to worry about is the lifespan of the computer.
I hate it , I hate Digital , I hate Plastic dash , you mite see that I'm old and this shit is not better , is this the new standard for K W ? I love W900L it comes from when Men were Men and you Had to know how to Drive , not this softc#% bull shit
Those models NOT receiving the new dash are likely headed for extinction. Personal opinion, no basis in fact. Look@ the sister PACCAR Company. Their 1.9 meter old style narrow cabs ARE receiving the new dash. Drawing a comparison, & conclusion.
