I have update my Sync 3 infotainment system to the latest version!
Last year I did a video that was part vlog where I showed you how to update the Ford SYNC 3 system in the MK3 Focus RS (also applies to any Ford car that has the same SYNC 3 infotainment system!) using the official Ford website where you input your vehicle details and then get the appropriate files which you then load onto a USB device and install into the car before returning to the website to load the update / log file.
This process is fine but has a limitation of only allowing the updating to a certain point in the Focus RS (and likely other models too) which for me was version 3.0.
I know, however, that there is a newer version out there - version 3.4 - that brings quite a significant visual upgrade amongst other things - and I want it!
I show the process from start to finish both on my computer from getting the update files required from the Ford website to preparing the USB storage device, and then moving out to the car and showing the process of uploading the new update data into the SYNC system.
There is a pretty awesome resource out there that provides a custom made software tool that takes some simple information about what you have and what you would like and then downloads all the correct files, formats your nominated USB device appropriately and loads all the files onto the device - all automatically so takes any guess-work out of the install media creation process for updating beyond the official Ford levels!
This software resource, as well as a host of useful information about the process and more, is provided by Cyanlabs and is completely free of charge which is super awesome!
The software tool, called their SYN3 Updater, has a very intuitive interface and quite simply just works - no messing about, no over-complication, no annoying ads or malware - just a great tool to help the community!
I show you the website, where to get the SYN3 Updater tool and how to use it before showing you the installation process in my Ford Focus RS MK3 - the process is super simple and requires very little interaction so really is a beautifully streamlined process from start to finish!
I now have the latest and greatest Sync 3 system in My Focus RS and you too can get it too - a big thanks to Cyanlabs for providing the software, detailed information as well as hosting all the files for doing this across all territories globally!

Some notes... Best to just keep the install mode on AutoDetect :) it will determine the best automatically If the car is left on ignition only for 20+ minutes the SYNC will likely turn off so you want to make sure the engine is running or toggle between engine running and ignition every ~10minutes Master reset is needed as many bugs are fixed by doing this and the amount of people that complain before doing this is extremely high! Radio stations are stored in the ACM not APIM so won't reset from factory reset Appreciate the video :)

So iam currently on 3.4.20282 same as adam if i update to 3.4.20351 or any other in future all i have to do is choose new verison , keep exisiting maps and use autoinstall , ill only need to update maps if there is a new version is this correct or do we have to reload version and maps

CyanLabs I have downloaded the files but I noticed on the log that one file failed, but the end of the download did say this..... ALL FILES DOWNLOADED AND COPIED TO THE USB DRIVE SUCCESSFULLY!

Whilst Cyanlabs have updated their software and there are new maps out, I’ve just used the basic principles of this video for upgrading my Sync to the latest version - really helpful video. I bought a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB USB 3.2 Solid State Flash Drive (really fast read / write speeds) and it took about 47 minutes to complete. I did the whole thing whilst doing a long motorway journey so it wasn’t a chore to sit and wait for it.

I can't say how much I appreciate all your helpful tips for the RS. Most everything you find is several years old as the RS ages gracefully. You keep it up to date. Anyway, I did as you said and got a blank 32MB stick last weekend went to the site and downloaded the full update to it via my laptop. Had to wait a week because of work before taking the stick to the car. I just finished the update and did the master reset. Mine took about 38 minutes to complete. Bam. Love it. No lag in at all. My '17RS had 3.0 on it when I started, now it's full 3.4. Love those new touches and colors. Thanks.

Long story short, I ran into a problem updating from version 1.0.15139 to 3.0.20204 for carplay in my 2016 Escape Titanium. After attempting to solve the issue by downgrading software and reinstalling the ford provided update without succuess, I followed your tutorial and installed version 3.4.21265 using Syn3 Updater. Carplay is now working and you saved me further time wasted. Thank you for making this video!

Just gotta say I am really impressed with this. I just updated my 2017 Focus ST with no nav, and my 2018 Expedition with nav. Worked flawlessly. I upgraded from Sync 3 20204 on both vehicles to the lastest 3.4 version. Thanks for sharing this out

@@shereenelhadidy6285 I used the link in the OPs list for the Syn3 Updater. I closely followed the direction that site gives for each car. It was pretty straightforward. I don't recall the exact settings since it's been a while. Hope it works out for you.

On the strength of your video I bit the bullet and upgraded the Sync 3 in my 2018 S-Max today. It was a flawless process and I was very pleased to get the radio logos and Android Auto echoed to the driver screen. Very much easier than the alternate methods.

Cracking video👍. I had never even heard of ford sync 3.4 until watching this. I followed the instructions and loaded it onto my MK8 ST fiesta this morning. Great video Adam, I thank you for that. Followed your instructions to a tee and hey presto it worked! Was sceptical it has to be said. Loving the look of the new updated 3.4 system on my 2018 Ford Focus. Not so sure with some of the voice control settings though, example before I would say Radio 2 and it would find it instantly, now the lady is struggling to identify some of the commands? My car is the 2018 Ford Edge SEL (Canada). Updated the SYNC3 yesterday to 3.0.20204 using the FORD website. There is a MAP update, which I did download to my computer, but I think it might be the same one as last year, which I already updated. Unfortunately the FORD website doesn't show the MAP version you're downloading. Updating to SYNC 3.4 seems tempting but also risky. The last thing I want to do is brick my SYNC. If it does turn out bad, there's no way to fix it. I'll pass for now.

Still it is absolutely crazy that Ford does not provide these updates via the official websites. They pretend but it’s almost impossible. Also it’s crazy that you have to drive 90 minutes while it’s updating. Really crazy!

I am in the process of updating my 2017 ST from the same version you had and going to the same version you have now . very nice format but one negative is that can't be removed and placed back the original format from Ford..... it's not approved from Ford the Cynalabs format. So think about it twice before install it.

Hi Salvatore, that upgrade requires the change of hardware so you would need to find a sync 3 unit from another car and get it installed

Hey Adam. I am trying to update a 2017 continental with navigation. The remove drive screen and updating system pops up about three times and then my screen goes black. What could be the issue?

Did this exact thing on my 2013 ST1 (with a full SYNC3 retrofit) not that long ago. Definitely a much better GUI and pretty responsive. You can also enable your climate controls on the SYNC3 screen via a Forscan APIM As-Built tweak. Note that you won't get automatic updates from Ford over wifi any longer. Assume your CarPlay and Android Auto work too?

I know it's a late response - but you can do it on a Mac. Check out the "Manual build" section of the CyanLabs website. It'll talk you through downloading each file individually, then you just copy the files over to the USB pen in the same structure that the Windows app does for you. Macs can format USB sticks as exFAT so no issues doing it all on a Mac.

So I created the USB as shown and inserted it into my car and it initially shows “updating system software” at the top of the screen, then it reboots but just loads back into the system as normal. If I leave it be, it says “updating system software” again and just keeps looping. I’m sure I set up the USB drive properly so I don’t know what’s wrong.

Off topic question,but have you had any trouble with the steering nearly being yanked out your hand under acceleration,mine is viscous and a lot say disable PDC (pull drift compensator).cheers

Hi Norman, yes indeed I had experienced the slightly scary pulling under hard acceleration so got a mate of mine to disable pdc and can confirm it makes a good difference

Heated seat buttons on Focus don't work in Sync screen even though they can be added. Only the hard button on HVAC unit works as standard.

What was the size of the file it downloads? Is it possible to have the dealer do it? As I was gonna ask them to do it on its service coming up at the end of this month.

It was a little over 24GB so they reccomend you have a 32GB flash stick. I would doubt a dealer would do anything beyond the smaller updates, this is a full reformat so I don't think they would want to do it

Hi Simon, that is something that can be enabled in Forscan or UCDS I think, my buddy enabled it for me a while back

@@AdamRainey sorry to be a pain but i gotto sort this now youve done yours. i think iam right in thinking thats 7D0-01-01 is the line that needs altering mines currently 0B68-65DA-901B which according to apim data the 9th digit "9" is I-CAN + RDS Enabled and iam sure to be as your dispaly is the "9" should be either "B" or "D" dont suppose there is any small chance you could find out , and i presume yours was adjusted because of adding the heated seats evac control ? thanx again adam

Updated mine bit now the gps won't work...anyone else having same issue?. Took it back to the dealers as its still under warranty but they told me they can't do anything about it until the next update??

Hi Adam big fan of your channel I’m hoping you can help me I’ve got a 2016 mk3 RS and I’ve been told it’s a sync 2 system and can’t be changed to the newest one like yours is this true... plus does your 2017 RS do the cool RS ford performance start up animation when you enter the car mine only does the ford badge.. and only little RS in little screen infront of driver.... I can change the background picture to a photo but can’t get a really clear picture online could u be a legend and take a super hi res picture of your start up full screen and e-mail to me please please so at least I can have that.. gutted the 2016 won’t upgrade

You can upgrade the 2016 to sync 3. You will have to replace the APIM and Screen from a newer focus (various sellers on eBay do sync 3 conversion kits). I converted my 2016 Focus Titanium X from a Sync 2 unit to a Sync 3 unit from a 2018 Focus RS and got it configured for my car. (Some sellers do the config for you and in that config you can have the "RS Ford Performance" loading screen set up).

@@AdamRainey They really should eliminate the Mobile Applink because I've been driving a courtesy car as my MKZ is being serviced and the only app that works through Sync 3 consistently is iHeart Radio all others either fail to connect or disconnect, what a waste. I'm thinking it's because they can't keep up with OS updates from either Android or iOS

Hey Adam My Sync 3 is V3.0 Built 17276 and had Climate and dual temp repeater activated using FORScan (in Australia it doesn't come with active climate icon, hence the need for FORScan to reprogram the APIM) . Do you know if updating to V3.0 with activated climate control icon to V3.4 will keep the Climate control icon active??? Thanks in advance mate

Did your configuration remain after the update if you ended up doing it? I have a 2016 Focus which originally had Sync 2, but I did a Sync 3 conversion. My unit was from a Focus RS so I had to get it configured for my Titanium X, I don't want that configuration to reset after updating.

Not sure if you got your answer. But I would think using FORScan should do the trick. You are going to need a USB to OBDII cable. Look for tutorials online on how to get started and configure your vehicle how you like.

If you have MyFordTouch then you cannot apply this update without replacing the entire system with a Sync3 screen and APIM.

Downloaded as described and when I get 17 minutes in I get a corrupt message on screen and the screen goes red. Any suggestions to either how complete the process or return to the original sync 3 display as I now just get the screen savers saying insert usb ... I used a 32gb usb - is it I need a bigger memory stick ? appreciate any help. Thanks
