The Fluance line of reference turntables has to be one of the best marketing decisions any company in the vinyl-spinning business has ever made. What they have done is to bring outstanding value and performance within reach of many people, and many budgets. These are very nice turntables and for a lot of us, all the turntable you will ever need. Upgrade when and if you can, but truly, all of these tables are a great value and all of them are beautiful, functional and worth every penny paid for them, unlike a lot of others out there costing the same or even more. We love our rt-85 - it has replaced my vintage '70's Denon table and is currently coupled to my late 70's Pioneer 780 receiver. Beautiful sound and performance at a terrific price!
This is another video that's just convinced me to buy an rt82. Currently I'm using my beloved Technics SL1401 that I bought in 1979 and recently bought an Ortofon 2M bronze. Now I can just buy the rt82 and put the bronze on it, which is the next step above the blue
I upgraded my rt82 with the acrylic platter and it lowered the tone arm vta? Had to put the rubber mat back on it to raise the height as the tone arm was dragging on the arm lift slide. Fluance claims no mat required? Would have been nice if the platter was actually the same thickness as the cheap pot metal one. The one on my project xpression table is perfection.
@@ch1525 i figured that out but the tone arm lift doesn't change the vta, from what i understand this tables arm is fixed, according to fluance support. Their suggestion was to just run the vta, afu. So i topped the acrylic platter with a 2.7 mm acrylic matt. Its level. The auto off feature is doa and their suggestion was to let the stilus grind away on the label until it shuts itself off. I think not. The 187.00 vivid stilus deserves better than that.
Not much! If you’re deciding between models and have the money definitely go RT85. This is more for those who couldn’t afford the high end model and want to upgrade slowly
I got question though. I have Fluance RT82 without upgrades and I am planning to upgrade its stylus to Ortofon M2 Blue. For the upgrade, is the default headshell compatble with M2 blue or do I have to buy compatible headshell separately?
All of the Fluances use the same tone arm on all of their models. The head shell and cartridges can easily be replaced. You can order just the cartridge and use your existing head shell or you can buy the head shell and cartridge together so you have a two swappable cartridges.

Nice review. I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on purchasing the RT-85 to replace my technics SL-D303 but would like to know how slippery that acrylic platter is when the record is placed directly on it and using a record brush with slight pressure be put on the record to clean any dust off before dropping the needle. Also how does the Ortofon 2M blue vs the 2M red handle classic rock albums like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush...etc...
Not very slippery at all. I've had my RT85 for >2 years+ now. I still use my old 70's era Dishwasher brush system to clean the records. Slippage (if pressing too hard) is no worse than it was with my old Denon table with the rubber mat. If the record slips, you're probably pressing too hard. I have to admit, it took me a bit to warm to the bare acrylic patter but now that I have, I like it a lot. There are record weights available if you're concerned, but I wouldn't be. As far as the 2M blue vs 2M red goes, I can only attest to the blue cartridge and yes, I play all my old vinyls including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown and yeah they sound great. That said, however, I am very curious to hear how the new Nagoya MP110 sounds. I might be tempted to buy that one (RT-85N) if I were buying now.

@@RM-ks8pp I know MY ears aren't what they once were either. Both cartridges are great performers at these price points, but there-in lies the biggest advantage of the Nagako cartridge, it's a lot less expensive - to replace later. I figured the RT-85 (with the Ortofon 2M blue) was a better purchase initially because you got a more expensive cartridge for the same exact price as the RT-85N now. But, can I replace my 2M blue with the less expensive Nagaoka later? Sound-wise, not sure there's enough difference to go from the Nagaoka to the 2M in reverse. Do I make sense?
I do have Fluance RT82 brought a frosted platter tested out didn't like it. Because it skipped good thing my cork mat fix this problem. The sound make a big difference I think my Ortofon 2mm 250 black is not compatible on this frosted platter.
had same issue contacted fluance because mine was not even reaching platter there is a small screw on the tonearm drop bracket had to be turned in few turns to stop the skipping
sucks got frosted platter for my rt82 and have to use the old mat in order for the needle to reach the record kind sucks and defeats the purpose of the acrylic platter
