The one part I needed, you missed--about mixing differently sized sticks. Ex., should I pair the 16's in one bank and the 4's in the other? Or just the opposite? Apple says to balance them in each "channel." If that's to mean, bank. Unsure.
No clue, but I took out the original and replaced with the 16 gb x 2 I purchased. Put the old 4 x 2 into the unused slots and no issues yet (been only a few minutes now). I can see it reads as 40Gb now ... hope it speeds things up now
@@bennykanny I landed up buying two sticks and popped them in taking it to total 40 gb (4+4) + (16=16). I feel the machine will take it. I purchased the sticks on Amazon, so if I had a glitch like incompatability, I could return it within 28 days. so far so good. I don't see any big differences but the thing would do its business when under strain I guess.
If my 2009 27in. iMac has 4 RAM slots and I want to upgrade to 16GB of DDR3 1067 RAM, is it better to put in 4x4gb or 2x8gb? Fill ever slot or leave two empty? Thank you for the great content.
hello good evening, I wonder if any of you can help me, I have an old Imac 21.5 inch , mid 2011 - 2.5 GHZ Intel core i5 with a 4 GB 133 MHz DDR3 RAM, My question is how many GB of RAM can I upgrade for this iMac 21.5 Inch Mid2011, Please need advice, anyone??? Many thanks.
I try to open and unplug the ram from my iMac 2011 27" but when i power it. I hear 3 beep that loops mybe every 5 sec, but the screen is off. Is my iMac damage after i unplug the ram?
Thanks, will try this tutorial for my 27 inches IMac 2018. I just bought my refurbished IMAC with only 8gb Ram and I bought an extra 32 Gb to make it 40Gb. Will see how it works
This sums my love hate relationship with Apple. When they decide to let users have access to upgrade they make it extremely simple. The problem is that they only allow us whenever THEY feel like it, which they don’t do often.
Thank you this was so helpful! I followed along exactly and upgraded from 8gb total to 64gb and i have no clue how to do anything with technology whatsoever! it was so easy and fixed all of my speed issues. thank you !

Is it ok to install the ram because you even turn on your brand new IMac. I just bought a 2020 Imac and it comes tomorrow. I have the 64GB of ram. Can I install it before turning it on for the first time?
Really great and helpful video but the presenter is the BEST! Humor in these videos is a slippery slope. He pulls it off beautifully. He should have is own TV show. Maybe he does. Thanks again.
I think you need to put a disclaimer on this video. Not all iMacs can be upgraded like this. Not all artists that ship will be able to pull apart the guts from an iMac to install memory. You're saying only if you have a machine with the door, then you can do this.
I have a iMac 27inch 2019 5k, base ram is 8gb which is 2 sticks of 4gb each, now my question would be if I buy ram from a third party like crucial or owc, can I buy 2 32gb sticks for a total of 64gb can it be compatible with the base 8gb for a total of 72gb ??? Or should I just get all the same ram sticks ??
Excellent video, thank you. Is there a particular "brand" of ram that you recommend for Macs? I am a photographer and use Photoshop and Lightroom frequently.
So if I purchased a new 27in iMac, could I buy a 32GB RAM chip to add to the two 4GB RAM chips that come with the iMac to make it 40GB or would you need to discard the 2x4GB RAM before putting in the new 32GB Ram chip?
Unfortunately, I will not be able to upgrade my late model 2013 with 8 GB. I did however, acquire for free a 20 inch mid 2007 Mac with only 2 GB, now I can update it. Of course, I used only my MacBook Air with M1 chip for everything.
Just got my new iMac and I wanted to upgrade the 8gb to 128gb. I bought the OWC kit and replaced the 2 sticks of ram that came with the computer. I tried to boot the computer back up and it wouldn't turn on! I put the original 8gb of ram back in and the computer still wouldn't turn on. Not sure what to do now. Any suggestions?
I do this which worked (thanks for that) but man even with eggs extra memory it’s still not enough for my video editing. I have to make partial videos and then combine them into one after I delete the extra footage. Is there anyway to add even more? I use and external hard drive for my footage but even the it’s not enough. I was hoping for a hardware solution
Thank you for a great tutorial. I have just upgraded my iMac to 32Gb with no problems. I used 4 x 8Gb ram modules from Integral DDR4 2667Mhz. You have saved me lots of money, I am a musician and use Cubase and Dorico music programs a lot. Many Thanks.
i have el capitan copias de seguridad and it says i have little space though in " clean my mac" but in machitoch in the comp. says i have much more space how can i fix this please
I heard from a best buy worker that putting in 64gigs of ram in my 2020 Imac could be bad for it; he said something like "bottlenecking". what's a good amount to upgrade on a a 3.7Ghtz 2TB HD on the 27" Imac?? The max says 64gigs.
I'm about to buy a 27" iMac with the i9 processor and 1tb ssd. Should I just get the standard 8gb RAM and just buy 3rd party RAM cards so I can have a total of 32gb RAM?
I upgraded my iMac 27 mid 2017 from 8gb to 24gb. But the new ram just won’t kick in and boot my iMac. When i have both of the new 8gb(s) in it gives a beeping sound. Can someone share some tips or ways to go around this? Thank you
Great video, thank you! If you're only putting in two sticks should they be in slots 1 & 2, or slots 1 & 3? If keeping the original 4GB ones also, do they alternate slots or do one size in slots 1 & 2 and the other size in 3 & 4?
