The intro songs were "Sofa Rockers" by Kruder & Dorfmeister, "Eple" by Royksopp and "Bytecry" by Weevil, last song ever used was "Exodus honey" by Honeycut, not played here ;-D
Might be worth mentioning: Before you attempt to run OS X on any iMac G3, it needs firmware 4.1.9, otherwise simply booting from a 10.X install disk can brick your mac.
You're completely right, I actually ran into that problem and it had me stumped for several days! I didn't film any of those parts, and it would've taken awhile to explain, however it's definitely something to note when performing a similar install.
Tip for anyone who has gotten into this issue. When you boot and you get a black screen, do not freak out!!! Keep shutting off and rebooting and eventually you you WILL be able to see "something" on screen, although it might be all purple/blue/yellow etc... (in my case it was mostly a pink screen). From there you can apply your firmware update. I'm not sure if you can do it through OS X, in my case, I had to reinstall OS 9 and apply the firmware from there, then go back into X.
Install OSX 10.x on your iMac PPC G3/G4 then copy the 9.x CD System files to a folder on your 10.x install. Run 9.1 from control panel. This way you can have both 10.x and 9.x running on your iMac. So you can run old 9x apps and games on your 10.x install.
I remember the upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 being a big deal. Going to 10.5 was pretty cool too since the new reflective dock looked pretty slick back then but I was disappointed that they didn't come out with a new aqua wallpaper but rather a sort of universe theme which went on for a 3 releases I think.
Apple shipped physical versions of mac os up until mountain lion. But lion and mountain lion were on usb. There was actually some controversy for the people who wanted to upgrade from leopard to lion because initially it was an app store only release, which meant users would first have to upgrade to snow leopard. Classic, running os9 on os x, only works on ppc. So it's something you can't do on intel computers, which is unfortunate Impossible cat is a beta of snow leopard that works on ppc. which might be something interesting to do a vid about
Great Video. I'm a collector myself and have every version of OS X boxed and complete except for 10.0 Cheetah. Something i noticed that you actually have wrong is what you have as your 10.1 Puma box is actually the box for 10.0. The difference is small but noticeable. On 10.1 the apple logo is gray/silver whereas on the 10.0 box it is blue as shown in your video. Another key difference is that the 10.1 boxes always have a sticker on the front saying that it is the "new 10.1 version" Just thought you might like to know in case you didn't already. If in doubt you can always check the side panel where it displays the contents as it will tell you which disc should go in the box. Hope that helps
Thanks for letting me know, I kinda thought something was up since the box label said "10.0" but when I bought it from eBay it was 10.1. I don't really know why it was sold that way but it was! As of right now I'm looking for OS 8 and 9 (which I already have) but have yet to find a listing w/ box and everything else.
No problem. I've got OS 9 complete in box. I'm trying to find 10.0 which just seems to be so expensive these days since it is rarer and hard to find. Would like to try and get OS 8 and some of the server OSes. Already have 10.4 server in the small box and 10.3 server boxed but would like to complete that set too so I would have all of the different variations boxed
Does anyone know if I can install G4 OS 10.1 on a IMac G3/333?? It has OS9.2 right now. I got it off eBay. I don’t have the original OS CDs. Was thinking of getting something off eBay to start fresh as the computer was not wiped clean before shipping to me.
You should get a 1999 Power Mac G4 and upgrade it from Mac OS 9.2 to 10.5, then get an Intel Mac with 10.5 installed, do a target disk mode to copy over files, then upgrade the Intel Mac to highest supported OS X Intel release.
I’m a huge fan of the very early versions of OS X (even burned Mac OS X Public Beta/Kodiak on a disc some time ago) but I’ve got to admit that OS X wasn’t really all that great until OS X 10.3 Panther. Everything before 2003 seems so slow and buggy compared to OS 9 in my opinion. You also had way less features. The OS probably deserved a better start but eventually it all worked out. Mac OS X still is one of the best operating systems ever made.
Me too, it's amazing how far they've come! I definitely agree that the early versions had issues, but the design was remarkable (even if it didn't run smoothly on Apple's own computers!)
10.2 Jaguar was pretty good and quite fast on a 500MHz TiBook I owned back in the day. But before Jaguar, OSX was something you could show to your friends and not much else.
Good video, but it seemed rushed to me. Would've been nice if you had actually gone through each version and showcased more of the changes. I don't mind 15-20 minute (or longer if necessary) videos on this subject. Nice collection by the way, and all in good condition. I'm still missing a couple of the earlier versions (10.2 non-server, 10.0 non-Public Beta), and my Panther box is in poor shape. At least I did pick up the server version of 10.5 Leopard in good condition recently.
Thanks! Yeah I really tried to keep it short just because most people typically lose interest after a few minutes. I've been building my software collection for awhile but I haven't even gotten into the server versions yet. OS 8 is really what I've been looking for lately but I haven't had much luck on eBay.
Yeah $125 is a bit expensive for an OS, especially considering the fact that I bought this iMac for around that much! If I ever find a good deal I'll be sure to snag it :P
Funny thing is one big around was considered Overkill in 2001 all up till about 2005 that's considered really good Ram even 2005 that was considered still decent amount of RAM cuz mid-range PCS at that time had about 512 megabytes of RAM from around 2005 or 2006
in mid 06 I was running a 32bit Windows XP build with dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 with 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and the DELL Dimension 4600 with a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 I salvaged from the local recycle drop off for free a couple months ago came in the base configuration of 512MB of DDR RAM, but mine had the factory 1GB of DDR RAM upgrade option which I've since bumped up to 4GB of DDR RAM, I'm using it to build a retro Windows 98se, and XP SP3 gaming build, so no if you were a gamer, or doing any kind of of serious work with your computer back then even 1GB of RAM was not considered overkill on the Windows/Linux PC side of things.
Still have the 10.4 kit? It's impossible to upgrade without the commercial package. Haven't had any success with .iso downloads on a Yikes G4. Would you be interested in selling?
I’m a huge fan of Apple and I’ve got to admit that OS X wasn’t really all that great until OS X 10.5 Leopard. Everything before 2007 seemed so slow and buggy compared to Mac OS 9 in my opinion. You also had way less features. The OS probably deserved a better start but eventually it all worked out. Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows is one of the best operating systems ever made
Hey @iTek i'm quite confused. I have a G3 500mhz with os9 and I want to install the 10.4 but I cannot find anywhere the cd install pack for that. i find the dvd, the install disk for G5, the "drop in cpu" dvd upgrade. Where can i find a cd install disk that does not require the previous version to be installed? Thank you in advance.
Hi, great video. I have my Titanium, Powerbook G4 that I just installed a hard drive that I bought from Ebay with OS 9.2 installed. I have the Snow Leopard disk that I bought from Apple for $19.99. When I inserted the disc, the folder opened to show me the files and folders in the window. 1) . _instructions localized file 2) .file 3) Instructions localized folder 4) .vol folder 5) _Optional installs .localized file 6) Install Mac OSx .app 7) Optional Installs. localized folder. When I click on any of these files, an error message comes up and says, The document ".file" could not be opened because the application program that created it could not be found. Can you advise on how to get these files or folders to work and go through the motions to upgrade to the Snow Leopard? Thanks, Mark
This video is awesome brings back the good old memories and yes MAC OS is pretty on this outside and powerful on the inside. I still have my old and legacy macs although I’m now currently using Power Mac 2012, 2008. I still keep my PM G3, G4 QS, G5, iMac G3, eMac and several others including Classic . All the drives have failed and I regretted not keeping the CD installers and backup image of them. How could a MAC fan not down that!!! Now I’m trying to revive all my old macs, downloaded Cheetah, Puma Jag, panther and tiger and maybe the installers aren’t good so none of them install successfully. Wondering where can I get these legacy Mac OSes.. any pointers?? Thanks! Miss clicking the aqua buttons..
I simply updated the firmware on my revB 233 G3, put OS X disc, formatted, then installed. Then I popped in the OS 9 disc and installed as is without formatting. I can boot into either OS by holding option. Classic mode simply doesn't cut it for me :/ it's too bad they never improved upon it, or even have it as a courtesy (novelty) in modern OS X.. But that's ok, I enjoy having my G3 around. Gotta love all the classic apps. Oxyd doesn't play well on emus, and the DOS (pc versions) of it aren't that solid (something about the Mac versions are much smoother and play nice on a 100Hz CRT.)
Glad you enjoyed it. In 2006 Apple started transitioning to Intel processors so from then on those OS's are incompatible with older machines and vise versa. Additionally in new versions of macOS it's automatically downloaded, so there isn't any retail boxes or discs you can upgrade with.
i need a video that shows that you already have 9.2.2 or 9.2.1 on a system , how do you add 10.2 to that same system without destroying the 9.2.x install? 1. when i try to install 10.2.8 on a partition2 of the same hdd that 9.2.2 is on part1 , its gives me RED exclaimation says os x cannot install , something about not first 8GB so how are are they people running 9.2.x and 10.x on the same system? would really like to see a video about that
I had the same problem on my iMac. What you will need to do is open disk utility and partion the disk. The first partion needs to be at most 8 gigs. Then the second partion can be as big as you want it. You will have to format your disk and lose everything. It should now let you click on the 8gig partion but don’t install yet. You should install os 9 first. boot into os 9 cd and install the os on the 8 gig partion. And then after it installed boot into os 10 cd and install
The reason one of those boxeed copies of Mac OS X camee with OS 9 was probably because of the classic environment which was basically just OS 9 running on top os OS X for classic app support for things like Office 98 as an example.
What was the point of updating from Mac OS 9 to 10.4, if you are not going to take the minimum amount of time to show something from each version of Mac OS X, if you are not going to use each version just a little bit? In this video you only show us the boxes with their respective discs and the intro videos, nothing more. A complete waste of time, even if it's only 5:50 minutes 🤣
