My name is Jake and I overhaul and repair instant cameras! Want your camera upgraded like you see here? Then message me through the links below!
In this episode, I absolutely max-out my client Jeremy's 1981 SX-70 Sonar. We end up going balls-to-the-wall with upgrades, including a manual control PCB, lithium ion battery adapter for i-Type film, custom clear housing and brand new grey 'elephant skin look' leather.
Like what I do? Find this video helpful or entertaining?
Feel free to buy me a beer (or two!):

Getting artifacts in the video? For best quality, manually select 1080p quality, as depending on your bandwidth, RU-vid may default to 720p - and RU-vid's 720p compression looks like garbage
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topics covered:
- teardown of a 1981 SX-70 Sonar
- debating cleaning methods of the lens
- swapping Fresnel screens
- a small 'review' of the Polastudio battery adapter
- thoughts on performance
- how to have me customize your camera
- custom shutter button!
- inspiration for my channel
Plus lots more!

Great camera rebuild. Can you display in a future show when you add the grid lines onto the SX-70 fresnel screen on B role. It would be good to see how it looks through the viewfinder.

I’ve got a SX-70 sonar, I don’t use it as much as I used to. And I certainly had no idea before this channel that it was a time bomb. Spooky 💀😂

Love your channel! Your videos made me consider sending you my sx-70 for an overhaul and i-type upgrade ( just as soon as i figure out the customs red tape needed to ship something from here to Australia 😀) Keep up the good work!

I'd love to! It might even end up on the channel... 😉

10:13 Or you could cut your leather skin with holes for the screws so you can take off the bottom panel without having to de-skin it. Would even look less obtrusive than having a panel in the back. [edit]13:57 I see you already figured that out yourself 😂[/edit]

Love your videos and i would like to see a future video of your private camera collection or sx70 sonar vs slr680/690. And funny enough dankpods has done a few videos on Polaroid cameras

Except for maybe that gold SLR 680, I think this lovely combo of leather and modern parts might be the best refurb you've done yet! I agree with your sentiments on the PolaStudio battery pack. Insane performance, probably due to a slight overvolt (within safe limits) to account for the aging electronics or relatively high resistance of those thin ribbon cables. Though I guess you replaced the PCB too, so that might also have something to do with it. I also agree that a battery door could be done tastefully, minimizing the effect of aesthetics while making a product that will last essentially forever. Though having said that I'm usually a person who takes function over form, so maybe I'm biased. Ditto on your thoughts about modern social media and video content lately! I avoid short form videos (save for a handful of my favorite creators will also do long form) like the plague. Especially certain Chinese spyware disguised as social media...lol I feel you just get more value out of longer form content, and it also forces you to focus on parts you may find less interesting, which is good for your attention span. Adrian's Digital Basement is one of my favorites too, same for Louis Rossman and the like. Great video as always Jake, and thanks for the shout-out. I'm looking forward to dropping my Sonar in the post for you! And who knows, maybe you'll find something on mine that's worth a video? Hahaha.

Im unsure about the powerkit from polastudio. I have the powerpack from retrospekt for my 680. But the powerkit looks much better and seems to have more Power. Great Video!

Anyone has 3D model of this housing? Currently I have slide-on lipo with self timer but it tends to slide out when in backpack. This idea of extended housing looks brilliant 🤩

Hello Jake, love your detail video! Its hidden gem for fixing the sx70. And I am currently try to clean my sonar lens, but how come you take off the lens so easily in 45:01? I try to rotate it out like you did, but feel like something (maybe the sonar gear) is blocking it from all the way out?
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 3 месяца назад
You must disengage the gears first I do this by lifting up the sonar assembly on the right side

I still prefer the look of the current Polastudio rechargeable battery instead of a door, it ruins the aesthetics. I understand your point of view, but I would prefer it to be cleaner. That said I don’t have one myself, when I saw $210 I decided to go on using Polaroid 600 and SX-70 film. Anyway, keep up the good work, you’re a godsend!

A small door at the bottom wouldn't look THAT bad Truth is we need to think about the future instead of today's convenience

So can the batteries be replaced in this version of the PolaStudio or is it impossible without breaking the housing?
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 3 месяца назад
It's possible but you have to remove it from the camera and then dismantle the internals

When I connect external 6 volts to the outer case battery test terminals of my sonar model, the camera starts the shutter/gears on repeat. When I insert a standard 600 cartridge everything works fine. Do you have an explanation for this? Is it bad connections or something else.

You need a pack of some kind of film in the camera to trigger the film counter switch Or your camera will be stuck on dark slide eject mode forever

Any chance you could adapt the Pola power thing with another usb charge plut on the other side to give it 20 years life?. using the one until it dies and then switching to the other one.

really just adding in some quick way to change out the battery, even a door, id be fine with. its such a permanent change that its the only thing keeping from even wanting to get it done. the prospect of just casually being able to use I-typ film is a really big appeal but the powerbar S is already cheaper and you just slap it on the top if you got a sonar... i suppose im also one who doesn't want to modify or having changes made to my camera unless needed. The other thing is SX-70 Accessories are just expensive cause it is a bit of a niche hobby within the photography spectrum... what can you do?
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 4 месяца назад
the Powerbar-S is certainly a 'clean' way of adapting the SX-70 Sonar to take i-Type film. But in terms of 'modifying' a camera, truth is the camera should ideally be overhauled regardless of which option you choose. To get the best out of the Power-bar S, the camera should really be 600 modded and have its internal metal tongue removed to make use of i-Type film easier. Otherwise you are stuck kludging fiddly filters over your packs of film, and getting no benefit from the faster ISO. As my video demonstrates, many of these cameras are ticking-timebombs waiting to fail (see mirror silicon). So advertising something as ‘plug and play’ and ‘no mods required’ does the public a dis-service when it comes to people getting the best results from their gear. Additionally, although the new Powerbar-S does feature a flash pass-through, it does become a pretty flimsy tower when the bar AND a Mint flash are installed. If you use flash regularly, this is something to consider. Modding the camera to accept a different base panel like this is very easy to do when the camera is being serviced and is already being taken apart. Each battery adapter has its own pros and cons
