Upgrading motherboard without reinstalling windows 10?

I've always done fresh OS installs when upgrading motherboards but this time I decided to let Windows 10 try to deal with the hardware change. Windows seem to have no problem upgrading an older x470 motherboard to a new x570. I have no conflicts or flakiness. Running my ram at xmp speed (x470 couldn't do that) and everything works fine.

Awesome! I was working in a computer store many many years ago where Windows XP was the standard OS. Every time when we tried to keep windows after a mainboard swap it was a pain in the a**. I remember there was a tool, which you could run that would deinstall some drivers to make it work, but it was still a 50% chance at best.

The answer is "It's worth a try..." Seriously, there's no guarantees but it seems like most of us that have done this type of upgrade or hardware change have had success. When I booted up with my new motherboard/CPU, all of my files were exactly the same as they were pre-upgrade. With all this said, you should backup anything that you can't afford to lose. With everything backed up, give it a try.

It's so wild how smart things are now. I did a full upgrade for my cousin, cpu, ram, mobo everything but the GPU. His stuff was old too, processor/mobo wise an it was a huge jump in hardware but all intel. Didn't remove a damn thing an it freaking booted no problem! It freaks me out kinda lol not going back in an downloading drivers ect. I'm about to do this for a friend tomorrow, but this time he's even upgrading his GPU, you think I should Uninstall his old GPU drivers before moving the drives to new PC then just hop online and download newest drivers for the new GPU? Just wanna share my story, my current computer is running windows 10, all of the hardware changed multiple times. About 4 different iterations and the first one was AMD while the subsequent three were and are Intel. The install is an original windows 7 that got upgraded to 8, 8.1 and then 10, all of the hardware changed including the upgrade from hdd, that I still use for vague storage, to then ssd to now nvme. While the machine runs absolutely perfectly, I can't report anything out of the ordinary. I may have done some cleaning of superfluous stuff in the past, probably literally deleted AMD folders in safe mode, but I just can't remember the details. I don't know how it all works specifically but I'm confident that dormant drivers stay dormant, unused, at worst I'm wasting a few mb here and there. Let's just say, the last time I did a fresh install on this computer I had to use the "format c:" command which is a bit nostalgic to me.
@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY Год назад
That's great, lol. If anyone was worried that an upgrade might not work, they just need to look the changes you've made over the years. Back in the day you had to worry about loading obsolete .inf or .dlls or having unnecessary registry entries because it would affect performance. These days we have so much more power and overhead you can't even measure the performance difference.
@FrankB1110
@FrankB1110 Год назад
@@PIFDIY I wish I had catalogued everything in detail, but since I've migrated the entire system onto the ssd, that is now a secondary, back in 2012 everything became so fast it's impossible to find issues, then migrated again to nvme and I mean cmon this thing is reading at 3.5GB/s easily. Speeds that were absolutely impossible back then.

Practically same story for me! I always upgraded my windows version! I've started with DOS and 3.11, then a fresh install of 95, updated to 98 and then to XP! Hi, I think the problem is that your Windows activation was tied to your hardware. For OEM licenses, this has been the case for a long time and a motherboard upgrade would trigger a prompt to purchase a new license and/or deny the original license (the original license was only valid for the original hardware). But in the last 5 years or so you had the option to associate your license activation to your Microsoft account. In this case an motherboard upgrade would have been acceptable to continue using the original activation key. See if it's not too late to switch the license to your account (you may have to create an account). This link may help. www.windowscentral.com/how-link-your-windows-10-product-key-microsoft-account. If all else fails, I would make a phone call to Microsoft and explain the situation. They should be able to help.

The question I have if you see this is, do you remember the coolmaster cm stackers? I have the 830 model it's New, never used it, Now I am wondering if I can even use that pc case with modern motherboards and usb ports etc.. what would you recommend in this scenario? it's a full tower a real beast that can utilize nine fans, I am thinking even that case is to old for modern upgrades. Also I bought a 1tgb ssd stick type M2 and I am trying to figure out should I just keep the operating system on that and have a sata hard drive? and lastly the dreaded windows 10, I have played with it and I do not like it at all, it wants you on the cloud, wants to consistently do upgrades to the system, and all the crap that is on their I am not even interested in and will never use But unfortunately I have to go 10 or 11 or the board/processor will not work, I went with the 3060ti gpu and an 850psu and 2x16gb ram, what a nightmare, mainly having to move up to a windows version that I really do not like.

I use to keep my OS on a separate SSD and then install everything else on another. Not anymore. I just have a 1TB M2 for OS and installed apps/games and then use another SSD for data storage.

@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY 9 месяцев назад
Nope, that's not the heat I'm talking about. I don't bother with cable management and the entire case is closed inside a cabinet so of course there's going to be higher than average heat in and around the case. It's still well within acceptable limits. I'm talking about localized hotspots on the surface of the motherboard, specifically the VRM's/MOSFETS. They were never designed to run 5000 series CPUs and even though MSI tried to release a BIOS that can support it, surface temps on those components were over 100C and there was instability. With the new mobo, I still have a mess of wiring and even less air space in the case, all enclosed in a cabinet with no problems.

Windows AI and automatic repair tool will actually detect new hardware and reinstall basic drivers for the hardware, the only conflict is usually in graphics cards, but that is easily fixed by making sure your graphic card drivers are in the same series, though you may need to rebuilt because windows after hardware change always boots into VGA drivers to make shure there is a windows post the first time.

If you have a retail license, you'll have no problem with activation. If it's an OEM license, technically it's tied to the original hardware and new replacement hardware may trigger a requirement to purchase a new license although that hasn't been my experience. Just link you license to your microsoft account before the upgrade. Google for more info.

The board manufacturer really doesn't matter. Chipsets are designed by either AMD or Intel. Built-in chips that provide ethernet functionality, audio, wifi, bluetooth, etc. are common parts that are purchased by all mobo manufacturers. When you replace a motherboard, Windows will expect to see the existing chipset and built-in chips but instead it will see all new chips on the new motherboard. It will have to work through the process of removing unneeded drivers, identifying new hardware, and loading the correct new drivers. If you have a problem, it will be related to this, not switching brands. Good luck!

Are there inefficiencies by not doing a fresh install? Yes. But honestly we're now at a point in modern computing where the hardware is such overkill for 99% of what we do that it just simply doesn't matter. Having extra lines of code in the registry, obsolete .inf files, references to old hardware, etc. just doesn't have the same impact on performance as it used to in the "old days". I would suggest to just try it and if you're unhappy, you can always just do a fresh wipe.

First off back up anything you don't want to lose. If that's done, there's no reason to be scared and no reason to uninstall Windows. Just shut down the PC like you were going away for the weekend and swap out all the hardware. When you boot up, give it time to find all the new hardware, it might prompt you to reboot a couple times but just let it do its thing. Not sure Larry, but my guess is that it should work. It had no problem removing motherboard chipset drivers that weren't needed and finding the correct ones for the new hardware. As for the new security stuff, if you're currently on Windows 11, you're using TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. You'll be upgrading to some of the latest hardware available (Alder Lake and late model motherboard) which is all supported so I don't see why Windows 11 would throw an error. Ok, that's a hardware issue and you just need to troubleshoot. First off, clear CMOS (look in your mobo manual to see how to do that). If it still won't boot, check power supply connections and reseat dram. If still no luck, try disconnecting everything until all you have is motherboard, ram, and power supply (if you mobo has built in video). If no built in video, you'll have to have a video card attached so make sure it's seated properly with proper power supply connections. Lastly, check you monitor connection and make sure it's set to the proper input. If still no luck, and it's AMD platform, it could be a ram compatibility issue. Swap with other modules if you have any laying around. Check your mobo's compatibility list usually printed on their product page on website and make sure that your ram is supported.

Curious on how the upgrade went for you? Did Windows 10 recognize new equipment or where there issues? I have an Intel i7 2600k with Asus motherboard about 10 years old and like many wondering if I can get by without a reinstall of Windows 10 in my case. Current motherboard, CPU does not meet the new security requirement from MS. Thanks with any information you can provide.

Thx it's actually true, I went from a B450 + Ryzen 5 2600 to a B550 + Ryzen 7 5800x without reinstalling windows. Not having any problems at all, but I did have to reactivate windows.
