This week on 10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast I am upgrading my shiny new Amiga 500 to a full ECS machine with 1 MB of CHIP RAM and all the fancy-pants ECS video modes! Join me as I go over the procedures, including the modifications to your Amiga 500 to upgrade it, and review the nice ECS Chipset. It is more powerful than you might think!
How about that cool Ace2b from Individual Computers? Or ordering an 8372A Agnus Chip? Check out the goodness here!

Remember, to use the 1 MB Agnus, break the connections between pads 2 & 3 on J2, bridge pads 1 & 2 of J2, and cut the trace for JPA7.
Are you a DIY Guy? Check out the Github for making your own 2MB Agnus adapter!

After coming back to Amiga, prompted by the PiStorm, my minimum is ECS, so I got a couple A500plus systems each with 2MB of chip ram. With the PiStorm doing the fast ram (pretty much as much as you want and way faster than any other accelerator) maxed out at 2MB of Chip ram is pretty good. Because I came back, I'm somewhat of a noob still, so your videos are really helpful at getting me up to speed.

If you are in Europe, they are everywere and still cheap enough to get hands on. If you are in North America, then it is some times cheaper to import from Europe. Even when import fee are calculated into the final price. And the best part is that you get a Pal machine. Those have the hoghest number of the good games. A Pal machine inside North America, are stupidly expensive.

My thought is at least update the kickstart to 3.1 and the 1MB Agnus with the trace cut by the trapdoor. You do not need to change it from PAL to NTSC or vis versa outside of software. The ECS Denise is nice but not a biggie for 90% of the users. If you have a 3.x rom the space bar switch from PAL to NTSC works just fine but you loose the extra screen modes. This is a great video.

My goal in life is to convince people that the Amiga is not and never was solely a gaming machine. It's a real computer, that was more capable than any other computer in any similar price range in its day. Gaming's great, and I own a ton of them, but the Amiga was used for so much more.

One fun thing to try on an ECS/AGA machine if you have a commodore 1084S monitor is to use a hacked version of the Euro36 screen mode which is made to be barely syncable with the 1084S. The refresh rate of this hacked screen mode is around 70Hz or something. The 1084S manages to sync to it and if your ears are young enough you can hear the high pitched hum from the screen is higher than it emits for PAL or NTSC. It doesn't eliminate flicker but the higher refresh rate means the flicker is faster so it is less noticeable. To get it working get MagicTV from Aminet. The only disadvantages are that your cursor turns black and you're limited to a 16 colour display. Also, in the video you rebooted to switch from NTSC to PAL. You don't need to do this. Just select a PAL screen mode from the list and Bob will become your uncle.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
Interesting! I will try that Euro36 mode out and see what it does! As far as just jumping from NTSC to PAL, I always thought a reboot was required to go from 60 to 50 kHz. I will have to experiment with that one and see if it changes the frequency.

I think a PAL Amiga in NTSC actually outputs PAL60 rather than NTSC. When I use composite video in my PAL Amiga in NTSC mode on my Commodore 1084S monitor, the refresh rate does go to 60hz and is in colour but when I use a different video source for example my HDMI downscaler and put that in NTSC mode (which outputs a true NTSC signal) the display is 60hz but only in black and white. PAL and NTSC store the colour information differently. Many PAL only monitors can display PAL60 perfectly fine. I haven't read up on it but I'm also assuming NTSC50 is a thing too? One fun fact is the Amiga's CPU speed is a bit faster on NTSC machines than PAL I am not sure whether or not switching modes on an ECS/AGA machines also changes the clock speed of the CPU. Maybe someone can shed some light into this!

I have mixed feelings in regards to upgrading a 500 from OCS to ECS. One is the number of ECS-only games. There might not be any that were not released as OCS first. True ECS gives you up to 2mb ChipRam, but that is only really useable if you get one of them TF-536 cards or something else with at least 8mb FastRam. There are limited number of ECS chips in the wild, and they are also bought by people who are building 500++ machines. And those that have ECS machines were chips die. In regards to 500 that shipped with ECS. Then there are the "fake" 500-Plus machines. I dont know if they were launched in North America at all. But they are all with Rev. 8a.1 boards. Compared to 500-Plus that had Rev. 8a boards. I have two of those machines, and I have modded one to a near Plus machine. I only left out the clock circuit and the battery. The "fake" Plus machines are the best 500, as they were never sold with a battery. Even the systemboard have 500+ printed on the silk screen.

@@10MARC Actually the Indivison ECS V3 is a FPGA ECS replacement. Not cheap (130€) but it has VGA-output in all modes, so you can use nearly every monitor with all modes (exept the A2022 Monitor, but I never heard of it before reading the instructions of the Indivison ECS anyway). So using this, you neither need an external converter nor RGB2HDMI (wich does not support the 31kHz ECS modes anyways). If you add the cost for ECS and special monitor or the cost for ECS-Denise+RGB2HDMI, you are nearly the same or even higher in price. For the comfort it is much nicer. Also you can use every VGA Monitor - including CRT. So you can go nostalgic without flicker... There is one point to mention: ECS Denise is not always a drop-in replacement. There is one pin nc on OCS Denise wich needs signal on ECS Denise from Garry. Some boards miss that connection, so you have to do it manually. Sadly I have a CDTV Board Rev 2.2.1 where neither ECS Denise nor Indivision ECS work; this might be the reason (no, it was not. Just the CPU was a bit loose - reseating it solved the problem ;-) . If you want to buy an indivison ECS used, make sure it is V3. Older versions need an original Denise.

That is very much appreciated! Thanks for watching! I have about a million more videos coming out.

I believe you also got more colors in hires and halfbrite modes.

Nope. Same 16 colors in Hi Res and 64 colors in Half Bright modes.

@@10MARC oh.. I was sure that ECS also gave you more colors. Interesting. Thanks for a nice video though.

any news regarding your a500 you killed by recapping? :D
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
Yes, it is back and healthy. I had shorted one capacitor, and that sent like 12 Volts right to the CPU, killing it and the Agnus. It is now recapped, and I just need to replace those two chips, and all will be well with the world.

I did this on my A500 years ago with a DKB MegaChip adapter (incl. 1MB)... I did cut the jp7a trace and jp2 solder bridge though...

Yes, I have two of those Megachips! One in my A500/Vampire in my Checkmate and one in my Toaster/A2000 setup. They are awesome products and sell for a fortune now!

@@svenkarlsen2702 If you have some soldering skills you could buy a broken vamp and fix it, lol. Got my vamp for $180 shipped. Broken ones pop up on ebay for 100-200 regularly

@@svenkarlsen2702 You don't need SMD skills. You stick 2 big ass electrolytics to the existing caps... It's way easier than the tutorials online make it seem :)

I always thought it was fat Angus (as in Scottish male name or famous beef)
@10MARC
@10MARC Год назад
Too funny! Where's the beef! Most the chips are named after ladies. I think Gary is the only one that's actually named after a man. Lucky Gary gets to spend his life hanging around with Agnes, Denise and paula!
