12:45 The black screen is a know issue when you do that memory upgrade mod, here in Brazil the workaround we found was set the power management to max performance.

These mods will save a lot of these video cards from now on, not only because of the potential of the RTX 3000 which are more moderate to make than AMD's for now! I have two 3070's. One EVGA and one MSI. Both cards run really well at 1440p, so I don't think I'll mess with them at this time. I do appreciate seeing what it would take to upgrade the memory.

For the kind of computers I build these cards are a good match with the mid-range platforms they reside on. Oh, and I do have a lot of respect for anyone able to upgrade or repair computer components.

Absolutely. It all depends on the games the user plays. Not all games require more VRAM. 3070 is a good GPU and will meet your requirements as is. You have made the right choice. 😁

This upgrade is definitively worthwhile if one has the faster binned 2GB Samsung too (K4ZAF325BM-HC16). RTX 3070 is severely VRAM limited in many new games, including Jedi Survivor, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077 and many others. Those games need at least 11GB of VRAM, so even RTX 3080 10GB is having not enough. It is also interesting that RTX 3080 10GB is already obsolete, in terms of VRAM, yet many pay hefty price for it, only to realize they run out of VRAM.

Those games need at least 11GB of VRAM... uhh I run cyberpunk almost maxxed out on a 4060 with only 8GB of vram.. and raytracing on with no issue lol. Around 70 FPS

This crashing after switching back to idle is a known problem after upgrading cards to a "non official VRAM amout". Maybe some older drivers will work but I'm not sure. Furthermore you can try the card in Linux if switching back to idle after load works there. Another work-around I've seen is to add some more capacitors to the memory rail. Maybe it will reduce the peeks after changing the load.

It's extensive work, but it seems to be the most affordable solution for at-home machine learning. NVlink, with a couple of upgrades to 22GB 2080, is more affordable than the RTX quadros.

Underclock the memory and see if stability and black screens disappear. Use MSI afterburner or your choice of control software.

He came to the conclusion that the frequency was jumping up due to a driver error. The decision is to lock the memory frequency. PS: I'm looking forward to you doubling the memory on the RTX 3080 ti up to 24 Gb.😇

This was very interesting. I was thinking about doing something similar with a RTX 3080 10GB. The Ti version of this GPU card has 12GB. When I tore down the GPU to bare PC board to replace the thermo compound, I noticed that the board had two unoccupied spaces where the extra 2GB of memory would live if this were a Ti version board. I was thinking about adding the missing RAM chips but was concerned that the board would not recognize the additional memory due to addressing issues. Decided to not take the risk in case my concern was valid in which case I would not have any idea on how to correct the problem.

Your concern was valid. Installing memory in the empty slots would not work as the data lines on those slots are dissabled from the GPU core. However if you had to install memory there the GPU would not have booted or given you a black screen.

You can upgrade RTX 3080 10 GB to 20 GB only, replacing the existing 1GB chips, with 2GB chips. RTX 3080 only supports 10 chips.

Oddly enough team Red has been adding 12gb to 16gb ram to many of their newer releases. Even Intels Arc A770 comes with 16GB. I dropped Nvidia after the 20 series launch, with that 2070 FTW3 super still running strong. The Arc A770 I bought "Just to see" has been a flawless performer even out pacing my borrowed 4060 just to test things out. Though admittedly the 4060 is better it still sports on 8gb of ram which gimps it in newer titles with high graphics settings.

I have the exact Zotac card in the vid, paid 900$ for it in January 21 but I knew I'll be able to mine at least some of it back and actually mined more than double at current prices, upgraded to a 6800xt for 500$ in late 22 because 8gb wasn't enough for me already.

I have that exact 3070, bought it new in January of 21, was happy with the card for around a year and then started to run into vram size issues so upgraded to the 6800xt and very happy with it. The black screen issue might be your power supply, the 3000 series had very bad transient spikes so it's probably hitting a spike just when the load stops, I have a 1200W PSU so didn't have any issues with my 3070 or 6800xt.

Sure I just replaced the power supply. The old one I was using was 1600watts but it's toast now. Got a new one 1550Watts thermaltake. Let's see how it goes.

So obviously increasing VRAM is going to improve performance, but which aspect of performance? Will it be improving resolution, texture quality, or fps? Or some combination of these? I watched your 2080 ti upgrade, so I understood that it gives the card more head room in computing tasks since it doesn’t become bottlenecked by data being loaded and unloaded, but from a gaming perspective I am not totally certain I understand completely. Great stuff though! Definitely keep it up!

Upgrading memory does not increase performance. If you are referring to games, it benefits is those games which exceed the 8GB memory buffer. there are more games which exceed the 8GB buffer compared to 11 of the 2080Ti. Here you will be able to load high textures with a smoother frame rate. The rest of the performance remains the same.

Unfortunately, the RTX 4070 already uses 2Gb memory modules which is the highest-produced memory on GDDR6 and GDDR6x platforms. It has only 6 active slots. No further upgrades can be done.

The thing about upgrading is that you can only double the VRAM. Unless the BIOS is modified and that is a whole topic on its own.

I got a decent deal on a 2060 6GB. Planning to try upgrading to 12GB. If it goes well, I might make a side gig out of it. I'm going to start by practicing removing, reballing and reinstalling the memory on an old R7 250. Once I am comfortable with that, I'll upgrade a GTX 670 from 2 to 4 GB. That's an easy one because you are just populating 8 empty pads with the same 1Gb chips. Then, I'll try the 2060. It is easier to mod a GPU for which there is already a variant in the capacity you want. If I have to buy a 12GB model for reference, I can. But it seems like it could be a lucrative side gig, considering VRAM requirements are on the rise. The pricing on 2060 6 and 8GB GPUs will fall a lot faster than the value of the 12GB variant. Same goes for 8GB 3060s. Then, when it comes to 40 series, you have a lot of 8GB 4060Ti cards out there. Those might see one of the fastest declines in value of any new GPU ever.

Its not so bad reducing one setting or another to get good frame rates , at the end of the day a good storyline outplays graphics anyday and often in fps overly detailed graphics just overloads one with detail imao. But great idea if you can pull it off !

The way the new games are made use too much VRAM in my opinion. You can have 4K textures that look beautiful. You can also have 1080p textures that look beautiful. It seems like a lot of games today use some kind of weird scaling method which degrades the look of the textures as you go down. This didn't happen in older games. Unless, you go way way back where games just started removing items from the game world and you eventually were playing a cartoon if you turn settings down low enough. Everybody says Unreal engine 5 is a great engine. Sure it can look beautiful but it also has many flaws. Performance is one of them. Native scaling is another. The engine works great with dlss and TSR. But I'm still not impressed. My RTX 4090 struggles with a lot of unreal 5 engine games at 4k when it shouldn't.

People always say that the bottleneck when you go over your VRAM is the system RAM. However, in reality, your system RAM isn't all that much slower than your VRAM. The problem is the PCIe slot bandwidth! Even a full 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 5 can only match the bandwidth of 3200 MHz DDR4. And there is no GPU that supports Gen 5 PCIe yet. The max you can expect is 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 4; which is half of that bandwidth!

You are right. The bottleneck is the PCIE bandwidth. But compared to the GDDR6 VRAM, GDDR4 is much slower. GDDR6 is directly available to the GPU compared the the DDR4 RAM which has totravel through the PCIE than to tthe CPU and then to the DDR4 RAM and make its way back. This is a topic on its own. May be i will cover it in the future.

Could you please share the preheater and hot air temperatures you use? I am struggling with desoldering the memory chips. Do you set the preheater to a certain temperature or do you use a thermocouple on top of the PCB and look for a certain temp there? The make and model of preheater would be nice to know as well please - I’m not sure mine is a good choice.

I use a preheater mat from AliExpress. The max temp of the preheater is 120C. So I keep it at 120C. Hot air temp is at 420 with 60% air flow. I use Atten 862D. Your setting on the hot air will depend on your hot air station you use.

You would need a boardview of that GPU. Without that it's like searching a needle in a haystack. Like I did on this GPU. I did not have the boardview for this GPU.

RX 6600 cannot be upgraded further. It has only 4 memory slots and is using 2GB memory modules. That's the highest capacity module produced till date.

Unfortunately the 3060 already uses 2GB memory modules and has only 6 active memory slots. 2GB is the highest capacity module produced till date on the GDDR6 or GDDR6X platform.

I think you have to flash the firmware with a modded version that is written to handle the extra VRAM. That's probably your issue.

My laptop has the desktop 3070 in it. Runs it at 150w and its usually within 5-6% of the stock desktop 3070 reference card. Similar temps to it too. Would be cool if it had 16gb of vram. Laptops especially have a shortage of vram where very, very few even offer 16g of vram. So if you do professional work and need lots of vram, it might be worth it modding your laptop board to have 16gb of vram.

Yes the 16GB 3070 on a laptop would be a super combo. Unfortunately, I have not tested this upgrade on Laptops yet and don't have one gaming laptop to test. I would love to test this upgrade on a Laptop to test what benefits are in store.

@@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql Laptop 3070ti = desktop 3070 since they're literally the same gpu. So, I'm just gonna call both the 3070 for simplicity's sake. You can finally use ultra high res texture packs at 1440p to 4k resolution. For example in cp2077, my 3070 laptop will run out of vram in dogtown if I use HQ textures. I can run out of vram in no man's sky if I use max textures at 1440p. Doom eternal at 4k will run out of vram. These are games the 3070 can push at 4k easily and keep 60fps or more. Other use cases would be productivity such as AI training would be easier with 16gb of vram, it would make vram heavy workloads easier, etc. And this 3070 in laptops went for a cheap price in several regions. Close to $1000, which is similar price to an equivalently built desktop with similar perf.

4090 has only 12 memory slots and uses 2GB memory modules. As of date 2 GB is the highest capacity memory module produced. It cannot be upgraded unless there are more memory slots available on the PCB and BIOS edited.

Louise Rossman and several other well known GPU repair people also have been upgrading the GDDR ram amount from gtx 1080,s all the way up too RTX 3080 , but they originally did it as Crypto miners where requesting it !!! on the asian market their are tons of older GPUs rx580,s with 16gb and 1070/1080,s with 16gb !!!

These are memory related issues. First thing I would run memory test and if I don't see any failed memory I would reball the GPU core. That will definitely fix the issue but after reball if it's still doing the same thing then the core is on the verge of dying.

Increasing memory capacity does not increase performance. Where it benefits is a smoother frame rate, Better 1% lows, can use full textures. Performance remains the same. Examples are 4060 8GB vs 4060 16GB.

It happens to me as well. the SMDs move and sometimes are lost. it's just a part of the repair. I'm sure you can do it. the best is to practice on a dead board before trying it on a working board.

the green protection is for the capacitors so they don't blow up, it a piece of s Sprite tin can, you can use kapton tape but the piece of a Coca cola can is better.

Then you use something extra (metallic?) with the heating. Again fluids. Then not sure if you also remove the little chip on the side, and replace that, or not. I stopped watching after that, and thinking, lets just buy a second hand one later with more memory, when new ones hit the market.

Ahh the orange block is a aluminium block used to keep the core cool while testing. If your are refering to the fluid when removing the memory it is flux. It helps prevent oxidation and aids in even temp distribution when soldering. When heating the green foil i use is to cover the capacitors as they have a tendency to explode with direct heat. the foil is a soda can piece. There are lot of details that goes into repairs or upgrades. its good for those who want to learn.

The original memory is GDDR6 14Gbps memory. You can upgrade to 2GB Samsung memory. But you will also have to deal with the straps so BIOS knows that the new memory is installed.

Here is an outlier question , the RTX 3060 Zotac Amp white edition uses the RTX 3070 Twin Edge PCB with the 3070's Vrm's , seemingly making it exceptionally capable for overclocking , I have one but i don't overclock it , i don't need to cook it for how i use it . But would this particular card be a good board for such extreme GDDR module addition mods, can that particular card be modded with more Samsung modules which is what it comes with , to potentially 16gb (maybe it would be 14 ) or does the bus width introduce restrictions and the possible extra demand for powering those modules affecting then the cards power consumption and heat dissipation.

Unfortunately, the RTX 3060 is limited by its bus width. This GPU has only 6 active memory slots even though there are 8 slots present. The non-populated slots are disabled from the GPU core and BIOS. the 3060 already uses a 2GB GDDR6 memory which is the maximum capacity produced. Unfortunately it cannot be upgraded further.

The highest capacity produced till date on a GDDR6 and 6X is 2GB. And GDDR5 and 5X is 1GB. So one slot can take only a 2GB modules. But again that depends on the GPU.
