This is a video showing the upgrade from an old Nutone IMA-4006 to the current Nutone model NM200WH. I was able to re-use the existing wiring but had to purchase the new master unit as well as new room remotes. Using the Retrofit Frames, I did not have to alter the wall holes for the new hardware. Part numbers for the new equipment are shown below.
NM200WH New Master Station
NF100MWH Retrofit Frame for the Master - this covers the large hole made for the old master unit
NWH300 Rough-in Box for Master
NRS200WH New Room Remote
NF300RWH Retrofit Frame for the Room Remotes - this covers the large hole made for the old room remotes
DMC1QCS Screw Style Connector, 5 Pack - used these to make my speaker connections
Cable Cross Reference - www.centralvacuumstores.com/meta/pdfs/info/M&S+DMC1+Wiring.pdf
Connections from old Nutone IW-6 6 conductor cabling used with the IMA-4006 to new the connectors and room remotes

Glad you made this video years ago. The house we bought in 2004 had a Nutone SA-2250 system in it, and something in the power circuit is now dying and causing the relays to start clicking randomly. Took out the two screws, disconnected the mains, and sanity is now restored. Gee, only about a 40 year service life. LOL

This is great thanks. 2023 So commenting from the future as this video is 9 years ago. But gives hope as to how I might be able to handle this unit.

Great video, explained things well. Will be a big help in removing my M&S intercom system, from 1995. In the way when we do the kitchen remodel Wish I could easily save wiring for just a stereo system but think that is way over my head. System still works perfectly. Thanks very, very much.

I disconnected two kitchen speakers from the intercom system. I brought the wiring from the original intercom location, to the other side of the wall (laundry room) where I mounted a Sonos Amp. Then I replaced the crappy intercom speakers with Polk 8" ceiling speakers. Now we have great sound in the kitchen with the convenience of streaming from our phones/mobile devices. You might be able to do the same if you remove your intercom.

My in-laws have an old 1980s intercom that no longer works. Thank you for the information. I will have a look this weekend and let them know if I can replace it for them.

Ah I remember when we installed one of these in our house after my dad finished the basement in the late 80s. Our's didn't have the built in tape player, but there was a MONO input jack inside the unit, I recall wiring up a CD player to it.

Thanks for this detailed upgrade info. I have the same IMA-4006, and planned to upgrade to UM2000WH. I was not sure whether I can do it by myself......It looks like i CAN DO IT WITH YOUR USEFUL UPGRADE VIDEO SHOW..

Good luck. It's really not that difficult and feel free to ask questions. If you buy any equipment from a retailer, they should be able to offer tech support as well. We've been really happy with the upgrade both aesthetically and functionally. Still though, when you compare the technology in these home intercoms to almost any consumer tech device, it's amazing that the industry hasn't gotten further along.

Thanks PIF DIY for the great insight as to what would be in-store for me if I opted to upgrade my IMA 4006 with NuTone's NM200WH. I've got to say that while I appreciate the detailed installation video instructions immensely, I'm sorry to say that aesthetically the finished product with those awkward refit plates does not impress me much at all. That applies to both the master and remote stations. Moreover, since I have seven remote stations and the front entrance exterior remote, it appears that this retrofit will set me back $1000+ for a pretty dated technology that doesn't even have sufficient power to drive separate stereo speakers. Unfortunately, I'll have to look at other alternatives to upgrade even if one of them is to completely remove all the hardware and drywall over the rough openings. That's too bad, I was willing to spend the money but not for something that is already outdated. No wifi , blue tooth, motion sensing night light, ability to show room temperature/humidity or receive external signal for outside temperature. This day and age people want the capacity to broadcast internet or satellite radio, audio originating with their entertainment center's receiver/amplifier, etc. Besides very basic intercom, this seems to be no more sophisticated than a pretty run of the mill clock radio.

+Paul Ryan Thanks Paul. I agree with most of your points. Personally, even though it doesn't look high tech like a Nest product, I don't feel as though the base and remotes look awkward. And even though I know that the finish plates are there to cover the old holes, to me they look like they were designed to integrate with the system and not look like an afterthought. To be clear though, this solution was the path of least resistance to remove old ugly base/remotes, yet still be able to have an intercom throughout the house. I totally agree that the new system doesn't add any functionality and isn't even close to some of the current home tech products that are out there. The music quality is poor and if I relied on the system to do any more than some light holiday tunes at Xmas, I'd be hugely disappointed. Keep us posted on what you end up doing. I'm sure others feel the same way you do and are reluctant to invest in an "old" technology when there may be better solutions.

Very helpful and encouraging that we can do this. Maybe you answered this somewhere along the way but would the speaker in the old room remotes work if all we replaced was the master unit? Thank you.
@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY 6 лет назад
You'll have to replace all room remotes if you upgrade the master. The old ones are not compatible.

Does NuTone make an intercom system with HD Radio (AM/FM is implied and ideally with all the modern conveniences) available? Mine is a MusiCall Model 888 original to my house, installed in 1962 with an AM-only radio in it. I have an extremely janky solution to add an FM dial by plugging in my cell phone with the NextRadio app installed on it and converting the 3.5mm headphone jack to an RCA composite audio line input, but it works. Also, the AM dial is out of alignment by about 40 kHz.

***** I purchased the new unit from an ebay seller that had an new open box unit. After buying all the parts, selling my original intercom and speakers on ebay, the net cost to upgrade was under $450.

thanks for sharing all this. Question: Do you still have your old master intercom? and room units?? I'd be interested in purchasing the master unit and possibly the room units. Are you still happy with how it all turned out and how it works?? Thanks again.
@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY Год назад
Sorry, all of that stuff is long gone. Yes, still happy (compared to old setup) but these units are from another day and age. Not very relevant any more. The music options and sound quality are terrible compared to whole home audio systems or less expensive solutions like Sonos, And now that everyone has a smart phone, intercoms seem antiquated. These day, people just text their kids to come down to eat. :)

Got a Mid 80s one outside..The Brown ones Push to talk Can i replace it with an Outside camera or something
@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY 10 месяцев назад
Sure. The great thing about these old intercoms is that all the wiring already exists. You can replace the outdoor intercom with a low voltage camera and the old wiring can be used to power the replacement device. In this case, a camera. Just disconnect that wiring and connect to the camera's power supply.

Hello, Thanks a lot for your very detailed explanation. I'm in the process of upgrading from IMA-4406 to NM200WH exactly what you showed here. But I have some complication (due to my inexperience in doing this), would you be able to answer my question sir, please. I've 6 remote stations and 11 speakers. How do I make my remote and speaker connections, please? I think speaker connections are just 2 wire (orange and orange/white). On the main NM200WH I see Room 5 thru 9 have 2 sets of connectors paired - I'm a novice, appreciate if you can kindly please help how to wire these, I can send you the wires pictures if you need , please. Appreciate again for this great video without which I would have not come up to here at all. Have a blessed day!

why did you make a connector for ipod when you can buy one for 2.00 and will never fall off like yours will over time
@PIFDIY
@PIFDIY 9 лет назад
proseinc proseic Keep in mind that the jack is fastened to the faceplate. Panel mount female jacks with RCAs that I found were over $10 and none had a long enough barrel to fit through the drilled faceplate. My solution was under $2.00 (I had the RCAs) and the soldered and mounted jack won't ever "fall off".
