Just after unboxing my 453A, I took out the 4GB (2x2) of installed memory and replaced it with 16GB (2x8). This is the first time I've ever done this, and it's actually very easy to do. The NAS is working great with 16GB ram!
Check out the ram I bought here: www.amazon.co.u...

Thanks for the video. I wonder does this reset your configuration if you have already set it up? Also if you only use one 8 GB module does it matter which slot you place it in? Thanks again.

Its a couple of months in now; have you by any chance experienced any memory related issues since you made this video til now?

Hi ecotts, I am still running this exact setup that you see in the video, the nas runs 24/7 with very rare reboots and I've not faced a single stability issue with it. It runs perfectly well :)

+mupet00000 Nice one mate... I will order that RAM in the description then... Many thanks!

Sorry for commenting on an old video. I have the NASBook TBS-453a and it looks like I have the same 14nm Intel® Celeron® N3150 quad-core 1.6GHz chipset as you do. Would you think 16gb ram would work on my machine just like yours? Thanks in advance.

Hi were you able to update the firmware to 4.2.3 ? I did the upgrade but something went wrong and had to send back the NAS to Qnap. i don't know whether the damage were related to the ram upgrade or not, but were no more possible to boot the system.

Thanks for the video, I was under the impression that the CPU in this NAS could only use 8 GB (ark.intel.com/products/87258/Intel-Celeron-Processor-N3150-2M-Cache-up-to-2_08-GHz). Have the NAS actually successfully mapped out the memory and made these avaliable in the OS, or have it been limited to 8GB?
@Carnology
@Carnology 8 лет назад
The official limit is 8GB but I can assure you that the OS can see all 16GB and it's all usable. I've had no stability issues at all, not one crash or freeze, it's running 24/7 with some virtual machines too.

+mupet00000 Might be per channel then. I just correlated the two figures and thought it would be logical. Did after some investigation notice that certain motherboard vendors using the same CPU have a defined limit of 8-16GB. Thanks for your quick response, ill order this setup rather soon.

Have you somehow stress tested your nas to make it go over 8gb of ram usage? I want to buy 16 gb too, but i am afraid it won't go over 8gb, even if it sees and recognises 16gb. That would make one stick of 8gb useless. So please give us some update. I have the ts-451+ and have one 2gb of ram inside it.

I've just perused Intel's 3160 CPU spec sheet. On page 22, it defines the CPU as a dual channel device, and up to 2 ranks per channel (so 4 ranks total). On page 72, we see a chart that defines how much memory is supported per rank depending on the memory chip population and type. According to that chart, its possible to have a max of 8GB per rank of non-ECC memory. Simple math tells us 8GB times 4 ranks equal 32GB of usable memory capacity for the CPU. This device motherboard has only two memory slots and not the usual 4 slots. Since 8GB is addressable per slot, we can use two 8GB memory boards totaling 16GB. I wish Intel would provide correct marketing information on the link I previously provided, they should of written 32GB as Max memory, not 8GB.

ty, so refreshing to see a concise, easy to understand summary that 16GB will be recognized by the intel 3160 cpu in this qnap 453a.

How are you getting on with this NAS, I was considering ordering the 4 or 6 bay version. Do you have any complaints and have you found any use at all for the new audio ports located on the rear? lol
@Carnology
@Carnology 8 лет назад
+SOUK TV It's working well for my needs. I'm using one HDMI out for Kodi and all my 1080p 5.1 DTS stuff plays well. I've got a virtual machine of Windows 10 running and I'm also running multiple apps in the background. Performance of the virtual machine isn't amazing, but it does the job. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a way to move the system and installed apps over to a new drive, so if I want to throw an SSD in there and keep my current configuration, I cannot. And no, I've never used the audio ports, they are pretty useless to me.

+mupet00000 Can you tell me whether you had to remove any warranty stickers to change the ram modules?

How about 4.3.2 beta? (64 bit new firmware) Still works without problems?
@trubadyr99

There is controversy. Intel claims this machine won't support 16 GB, only 8GB. There is a video of a mem-test disproving this. It is in German but very self-explanatory. Still: why would Intel deny 16GB support?
@Carnology

No Names well it obviously works as I've still got 16gb ram in this nas and it's still running fine.

Been running the 16gb ram since November without a problem, always running latest updates etc with 4 x WD RED 6TB drives. Installed 3 IPC's bout 2 months ago, and had a myriad of problems since. Cant load apps, Raid resyncs, etc. Wiped the NAS two / three times. Raised a ticket with QNAP, still on-going. Wished Id sunk the cashola into another device.... Have you had any issues> mupet00000

Hi, I was having doubts regarding if I should buy 16g, after reading all this However, I request help from my local store, and they installed without any problems. I was still afraid that I would ruin my virtual machines. Nevertheless, I decided to go forward! It is working with 16G for the last 2 hours! I have 2 virtual machines (8G + 2G) working - no problems at the moment! (intensive processing jobs) You can see the result of the top command in the QNAP: "Mem: 11567524K used, 4759708K free, 246232K shrd, 120272K buff, 1665340K cached CPU: 57.2% usr 6.1% sys 0.0% nic 35.7% idle 0.5% io 0.0% irq 0.3% sirq Load average: 4.48 5.04 3.57 3/1535 1080 "

Pedro Tarrinho so you could upgrade to 16 gb ram & allocate lets say 8gb of that to 1 VM and the remaining 8gb can still me used?
@tarrinho
@tarrinho 6 лет назад
Yes, I have 1 VM with 8 GB and another with 2 GB and the rest is used by the system. Working without any problems and real fast!

Hi, I'm going to buy this QNAP model, and I want to upgrade the RAM, to have the 16 GB. Can you give me the exact type of RAM I need? Is there anywhere a compatibility list for the RAM modules?
@Carnology
@Carnology 8 лет назад
Hi, I'm not aware of a list as it's not officially supported. You can find the ram I used in my video description, it's the only 16GB kit that I'm 100% certain works.
