Upgrading The Antenna for Beginners/ Wilson vs Stryker 

I used to have the Wilson Trucker 1000 when I had a Cobra 29. However, in June of 2022, I bought the Stryker SR955HPC v2 and the Stryker SR A-10 antenna. Of course, the SR955 radio had something to do with the far better talk/receive distance, (I average about 20 miles, not counting skip), but that SR A-10 antenna played a very big part too! Just as you said, the fact that I could easily remove the coil and whip w/o removing the Mag Base whenever I went to the Car wash, (don't forget to screw on the protective cap first), was a HUGE PLUS! Also, removing and replacing the coil & whip did NOT affect my SWR settings at all. So, I didn't have to get out my Allen wrench and SWR meter and reset it after I placed the coil assembly back on the Mag Base. I have it all mounted on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK, (with the 22" tires). The Jeep is tall and when I wash it by hand, (I do that at least once every year), I have to use a ladder to was the roof. The Jeep has a Sunroof but the Mag Base is mounted perfectly, right in the center of the vehicle, just forward of the Sunroof. I get great reception in all directions and my SWR, which is 1:03 to 1:04 barely varies more than .02 across all 40 channels and that includes the USB/LSB frequencies too. So, YES, it's definitely worth the money. Especially if you spent about $400 for the radio and another $110 for the conversion, and Peak & Tune work! You don't want a $30 'economy Firestick' for a radio that cost you more than $500. Get an antenna that matches or beats the quality of the radio and you'll never look back! Thanks for the video! Just got my stryker sr-a10 today and installed it. Right out of the box on to the truck no tuning it was at 1 swr on channel 1 and 1.1 swr on 40. really like the content will definitely keep watching

I wish people would honestly say thank you for trying before bashing a man for trying I mean in all honesty you don't have to do what you do however we are thankful for you doing it and the time you put into it.

Just installed a Stryker 447 and SR-A10 in my pickup at the end of last week. Have been able to talk with some base station guys about 10 miles away with transmit turned way down. Also was able to hear the same guys about 25 miles away from a high elevation (didn’t try transmitting). For terrain reference I’m in the hills of east Ky. Really impressed with this antenna / radio combo so far!

I'm still on a little wilson for now but I have shot skip all over the country with 250 watts behind it and talked to a base station simplex 50+ miles away I was blown away! I cannot wait to get the stryker I had no idea they had blue lights in them that lights up when you key that kind of sold me on it I was between the striker and the Wilson 5K. The stryker will be so much better than the little will. Thanks for the video

I just came across your video. Great video thanks for taking your time and discussing this. I will say I was surprised you have never seen the brownish greas lol I used it and still do lot's in the trucking and industrial equipment repair area it's more then likely Grote’s Ultra-Seal corrosion preventive this stuff is freaking great for any exposed electrical connections. And other uses that you might want to protect.

*Hey Brother, I Finally bit the Bullet and bought a Stryker SR-A10MM Magnetic Mount CB & 10-Meter Radio Antenna. I’m going to install it today after work.*

I bought a Stryker SR A-10 from Amazon I hooked it up to my President Thomas CB with an SWR meter and keyed the mic to calibrate nothing flat lined. checked the coax and mount they were fine. Next I checked the coil it was shorted. Ordered a replacement the coil on it was also shorted. I reached out to Stryker They shipped me a new coil I will get it next week hopefully it wont ha short. If this one is bad I am going to get a Wilson 1000.

If you put up a Antron 99 just above your roof of your house you will be able to reach the interstate. I use to have one up about 38 foot. My friend had one up about 50 foot and he could talk all over the place.

I just ordered one for my Anytone AT6666 which is a Stryker. My lil wil won’t talk 10&11 meter without making two different whips different lengths. This antenna should work.

I run a hard mounted Wilson 1000... Stryker 955 an a 4 pill. Also have Second mount for a predator 10k... When I feel like sitting an shooting skip.

I have the striker and I don't think it's any better than the Wilson 1000 they both work pretty well

I run a 980 and a 955 in my truck right now with each running on a single 2 foot firestick. The 980 runs great with the firestick. The 955 wants more antenna for sure. Plus its wired directly to my batteries. Its more than apparent to me that different radios operate better with different antenna

Aah I just used to take the whole mag mount off and stick it horizontally to the bed of the the truck. And if the disco lights stop working…??? I don’t look at my antennas when I’m talking! 😂😂 Just more junk to go wrong!

I use the word goo all the time for dielectric grease.

I have a new Stryker i was going to install in my Avalanche but i couldnt find a way that was shall we say pleasing to the eye.So i mounted a Francis fiberglass on a fender or hood mount up front.Works good but its not the best. 73s 514 Ontario Canada

mini Will is a great bear foot antenna for any radio you put inline with . did you know Styker bought out Wilson, thats why lots look the same one last thing ,I get a laugh when a mobile antenna says it handles over 1000w or higher lol remember what kind of coax is inline with the antenna comes with, it wont handle what it says it can handle without upgrading the coax

Stopping me from buying the SR-A10 is the blue light when keyed up. I don't feel like broadcasting to the whole world my activity.

Got an a 10 today. It did have the removable end. They must have taken your video under consideration. Lol it also had the rg-8x coax on it. They labeled it. Another thing they took into consideration from the looks of it. Great

You better check your local laws concerning the blue lights in the antenna. You can be fined for it.

I got my Stryker SR A-10 antenna earlier this year for my pickup had my Lincoln 2+ as the radio of choice tuned it as close to 1.1 on all 40 channels. Decided to get a new radio the Anytone 5555n 2 which is a power hog so I wired it straight to the battery, but switching radios raised CH40 up to 1.7 on the SWR. I retuned it so it would be 1.1 on all 40 channels. One thing I noticed the radio wouldn't fully modulate even if my portable meter is showing 1.1. When I slapped the antenna out of the box onto the truck it did come with a rubber piece on the base of the magnet mount. I removed it, and my SWR went up to 1.5 on CH40 and 1.0 on CH1 so I retuned it again to 1.1 on all channels and she modulates great on the radio. Is it good to remove that rubber boot after you unpackage the antenna? I will say it's a great antenna I went from a lil wilson myself my range went from 10 miles local to at least 30 miles around.

The Wilson 1000 is very compatible. Should be comparing them.

Question. I have a Stryker SR-A !0. For fun, I checked for shorts after mounting, and noted there was continuity between the coax cnnections when the antenna is mounted. Is this normal?

Two totally different antennas depending on the area you live is how you would choose. The angle of the lobe on the lil will is better suited for mountain area considering the steep angle of take off which carries over the top of the mountain where the Stryker would be a lower angle almost leaving straight out instead of up. Lights in the Antenna may have a cool factor but that is RF being used up instead of being sent into a rf wave. glad you got corrected as to it being die electric grease instead of goo. Alot of people have no idea and might just throw some conductive goo causing a dead short.

Looks like a great antenna but it lights up?🙄 How do I disconnect the lights? Completely ridiculous, plus a traffic ticket magnet. BTW, great video J Rich.👍

I notice with this particular antenna it's a little hard to screw the coil on to the magnet. Got to push down on it hard to get it to go on to twist tighten.

So with the radio/antenna setup you have there what distance do you get when transmitting or receiving curious because I’m trying to get started with one myself Thx again for the videos

dunderhead likes the stryker because of the lights. guess what powers those pretty lights. Transmitter power.. Next time try the Wilson 62.5 inch 1000 or 5000. There is no such thing as starter radios. CB is the animal band, get a high feature radio, an amp, and a damn good antenna. If it has lights, it better be a disco ball.

The K40 is a piece of junk. I bought one and could not get the SWR down to something acceptable. They had a Little Will in the store, but only had pieces of it. I gave the K40 back right away and could not try the Little Will. I use a Browning CB antenna which I am very satisfied with. There is one thing, that gets me all the time that was not mentioned in this video. You cannot check your SWR when you are on sideband. SWR meters measure your carrier. Since there is no carrier on sideband, it cannot be done. I always forget to switch to AM when I tune an antenna. Oh well. And yes, the closer you are to 102 inches for the whip the better. 102 inches is a 1/4 wave on 11 meters.

I was up in the air on what mag mount I wanted to put on my truck..it came down to little Wil and the Stryker but without any concise information on the better of the two I kind of stalled and started looking for user info on the tube and found your video and a little Wil video..needless to say you both did a comparison of the antennas and both of you found the Stryker to be just a little better. The little Wil did ok but the Stryker just seems to edge it out.. my only question is... will the Stryker perform good using fm as well as ssb ?

Mounted behind the pickup cab with the base at the same height as the bed box top rail. That is my question of the day. Will the above cab antenna height exceed > 1/2 antenna full height of 62"? It is my understanding, for best forward transmit power the vertical obstruction, '70 Chevy CST cab, must be < 1/2 antenna height. I'm anxious to know, as I've been looking at these antenna for over a year. My two 5' Firestik II are not car wash friendly. your Dosy meter appears to be the same as my TR2000. From my point of view I wouldn't have change anything after the first 1/8" hike in antenna height. I mean really, 1.1 or less I'm having an organism, popping the top on a homebrew and calling it a day. Great vid and certainly appreciate your address on this antenna.

Hey man I have a 2017 f350 and it’s a alumiduty so I can’t use magnet mounted antennas do you have any good recommendations for an antenna , I want to mount it on a bracket to my tool box. And the cb I want to mount is a cobra 29 ltd classic but it’s supposed to be a little tweaked for more power.

Have you or anyone out there tried a mag mount on a glass moon roof? Yes glass is not magnetic. But maybe a steel.plate on the underside of the glass? Are the magnets strong enough to pull through the glass. Just a crazy question..

J Rich I updated to Stryker SR-A10 antennas and since I did I’m getting a SWR a little over 2 on 1,20, and 40. Tried adjusting the whips and I’m getting no change in SWR. Any suggestions?

I just watched your video and really found it informative, as are all of your videos. I recently installed my K40 antenna that I used back in the late 80's to early 90's. It was working very well back in the days with my Midland CB. I recently installed a Cobra 25 LTD Classic and dusted the cobwebs off of the K40 and installed it. Now, all I get is static and a faint sound of truckers that sound like they're 100 miles away. When I do a radio check, everyone says I sound really "fuzzy". I have the antenna mounted in the center of my roof. Does this issue sound like an antenna problem? After watching this video, I'm about sold on the Stryker. I looked on Amazon which sells for $129. You mentioned this antenna cost around $100. Where do you recommend shopping?

SWR is Overrated.The difference in those two SWR readings nobody will ever hear or see the difference if it were the same antenna.Compare the Wilson 5000 vs Siro 5000.It's not a fair challenge with the Little Wil.

little will is a total different antenna. you had to compare it with a wilson 1000. so this compairing is nothing worth. in my sight of vieuw.

They are all the same. Chinese junk. I do run a trunk mounted wilson 1000 for cb an i have a wilson 5000 trimmed for 10 meters. They work pretty good. Definitely not the quality they were 25 years ago. But tuned both with my analyzer 1.1 both bands where i have them set where i like to talk. Also have sirio 5000... They all perform basically the same.
