A short 30 seconds video that details what would happen when you get fibre optic broadband if the current supplier is BT in UK. Please note the video assumes that the customer has the latest BT Smart hub 2
To get fibre at your household you only have three options
a) either pay for the upgrade (conditions attached)
b) get the fibre optic cable as a part of Openreach upgrade in the area (replacing the copper cable that runs from the cabinet/pole to your home with a fibre cable and ONT modem install as shown in my video)
c) share the cost of fibre upgrade with other households
More details:-
For a) it is straight forward, contact your current broadband supplier or other independent network provider of FTTP broadband.
For b) Replacing all copper cables to fibre optic cables is govt's ambition by 2026, I don't think that will happen. By 2026 I would estimate 70% 'full fibre coverage', i.e houses with ONT modem. The rest will still be on ADSL. Right now (in 2023 Sept) it is about 40-45% FTTP i.e fibre to premise coverage by upgrade. The remaining 50% are the time consuming complex infrastructure upgrades.
For c) Community partnerships - Openreach also has paid schemes targetting weathy affluent areas where there is no ducts especially roads that are held privately to lay fibre optic cables.

I only have the phone line standard socket and not the other one next to it. Could this be why I cannot get any higher than 70mbp?

Yes, that is correct. Means you are on ADSL, no fibre in the premise yet. To get fibre in the premise you only have three options a) either pay for the upgrade (conditions attached) b) get the fibre optic cable as a part of Openreach upgrade in the area (replacing the copper cable that runs from the cabinet/pole to your home with a fibre cable and ONT modem install as shown in my video) c) share the cost of fibre upgrade with other households More details:- For b) Replacing all copper cables to fibre optic cables is govt's ambition by 2026, I don't think that will happen.
