If you have an old CD player from the 1980s or 90s, a simple and inexpensive upgrade could be an external DAC.
I tried out a Topping E30 DAC with three of my old CD players with excellent results.

Took your advice and added a Topping E30 and used my Pioneer CDJ 7 (yep, a dj deck) as a transport. Wow! Amazing. Much more vivid sound; plenty of resolution. Better imaging and sound stage. Vast improvement on the mids, especially women’s voices. May not be the greatest but, it definitely upgrades older cd equipment.

Thanks for this video Dave. Like you, I believe that a good quality external DAC will really make a big difference in how we can appreciate digital music files from different sources (laptop, CD players or CD transport, digital audio players, etc.). I am very happy with my Rega DAC connected to my vintage SanSui amplifier via a Panasonic equalizer. Sometimes I couldn’t believe that the music coming from my Cambridge CXC sounds better than vinyl. The external DAC is really an amazing invention to make “digital truly sound like analog as analog can be!” Thanks for the video as always. 😊👍

Iam confused on this just to run a dac from CD player and has to run though my recivier out opt to dac the how does his go to recivier ? Most dac I see they used for headphone amp

I purchased my very first CD player from a Hi Fi store In Dunstable in the mid eighties..If my memory serves me correctly it was a Trio make..I think that they were subsequently taken over by Technics..Great down to earth video.

@@MODAC...they’re much more of an engaging speaker than most of the modern day speakers, and I think that most of the new speakers sound cold and sterile compared to those PROACS. Enjoy them to the fullest!

@@MODAC Sorry it's just that I wanted to highlight the fact that with digital you are describing using fixed measurements whereas , with your analogy, a text based description can be vague. Obviously there is still scope for inaccuracies but that would be due to resolution rather than misunderstanding.

Well,depending on the internal DAC in the CD-Player its often just the output stages that needs an overhaul to better the sound significantly. In fact even some realy old DAC chips like the PCM58P or TDA1541 are still capable enought to deliver top soundquality if paired with good output stages. And there is no need to retreat to high end voodoo parts.

I know as a musician I got lost a long time ago! By loosing what we did in past By feeling the instrument. Notice digital is cleaner but more clinical & cold! So I think our generation is pickier always searching for that feel balance. But it actually gets so harder with all the different companies trying to confuse our generation 😊 so we seem to spend way more searching for the perfect personal tone! Oh well thus is life of a tone addict!

I use the Cambridge Audio Dacmagic 100. It dramatically improves the sound from my Marantz cc65 (1990’s unit). The Dacmagic offers connections for two coax, one toslink and one usb. I use them all, laptop, Bluetooth steamer and CD player....You’re absolutely right about the improvements you will hear in your system by adding a good dac!!! Great advice!! That California audio labs unit is in another league in comparison to an entry level dac. .... I always enjoy your videos!! Thanks for continuing to make cool content!! 😎👍 Btw I have the Parasound HCA 806 in one of my setups.....I saw you had one in another video....I’d like to know your opinion and experience with that amp.... Yes, the CAL did sound better to me. I found the HCA-806 cheap locally and used it to bi-amp the ProAcs. I did have to replace all six of the speaker relays...known issue. Sounded good, but when I compared it to an Adcom GFA-555, I sold the Parasound. I am checking out a Parasound phono preamp right now that's blowing my mind.

@@MODAC Yes, I’m currently experiencing the relay issue with my HCA 806. I need to find a local shop capable of performing the service. The problem has improved since I’ve added a Parasound P/HP 850 preamp. Also I’m using a Pair of Snell floor standing speakers that are 4 ohm. That seems to help the relays pass more current I suppose. The 850 preamp has a phono preamp built in...it sounds nice with my Sanyo TP 1020 direct drive table. I also have the Parasound Zphono preamp which drives my Empire Troubador 598 turntable.....another piece I know you’re familiar with. The Zphono sounds great! One of my Favorite pieces in my collection. My 598 has the Empire 1000 ZE/X cartridge.....I was considering replacing the stylus, it’s long overdue. I’ve found replacement stylus for around $20 online. Another option I’ve considered is getting the Ortofon blue as a replacement......having the original Empire cart is just so cool though...... What cartridge did you use on the 598 table? Regards, Carl Btw, what Parasound preamp are you considering?

Thanks for this excellent comparison! I have been wondering how well these newer, affordable DACs stack up when compared to vintage entry level hi-end CD players. Sounds like some of the old gear still holds up...but still it is great to see how these new external DACs can level up new and old "mid-fi" sources.

I know it’s a year late. But many older CD players that were not budget players have better dacs. Dacs in the audio aspects since the 90’s have not gotten better sonically. More efficient, and smaller though.

@@unicornharry7995 This video had caught my attention because I also have a CAL Icon Mk II with the Dual 18-bit Burr Brown DACs and I thought someday I might put an external DAC on it...then I picked up a used ADCOM GCD 700 which have the Dual 20-bit Burr Brown DACs and it had a much smoother sound than the CAL Icon. So that got me thinking again about getting an external DAC for the CAL Icon again...I guess the Topping he reviewed would be of no benefit for me

@@barbedwirerat661 absolutely not I got a e30 it’s lifeless. Detailed, but sounds like a really advanced alarm clock. I got a pioneer dvr-7000 and a denon cdp-290 both sounds miles better with life and detail. E30 is good for a computer for mixed usage where clinical sound and detail can be useful.

@@manchesterexplorer8519 much better? People want new stuff, or assume they are new so they are better. But in my experience with many cd players. I picked up a 1982 Yamaha cd-2 recently that has better dynamics with better detail. than my onkyo dxc390 that retail for $390 now. Sure the dxc has better sound stage but everything else falls short. I am sure there is better but I am talking about for the money old dacs do just fine.

Of course. Just about any outboard DAC will improve the sound if your CD Player. I have 4 DACs. Peachtree DAC ITx Topping e30 Khadas Tone 2 Pro Ancient Audio Alchemy Stuff. They all improve the over all sound, BUT... if you CD Player is an afro-American Life Support System, you’re outta luck. (Boom box) Your associated gear also counts.

You seem to be a Burr Brown fan boy give your three CD players There are lists on the transports and DACs used on most vintage CD players. They can give you a pretty good idea of which ones might be worth keeping or trying out. But this just goes to show you that most of the difference in what your hearing is the analog circuitry that follows the DACs. Do you have anything with the early Philips DACs? Those had a big following and I'd be curious as to how some of those might compare to the E30. I know that Topping is no slouch. I have a D30 connected to my Squeezebox.

I'd say the Cambridge audio DAC magic ( the old black one )was the first mainstream DAC, it cam out in the 1970s. I've used an audiolab DAC and found it " warm ", not punch or dynamics, ok with classical but dead with rock.

A wind up music-box is a digital music format that you can touch - Specifically the pins on the rotating cylinder, equivalent to the grooves on vinyl. Printed images are also digital.

A music box is very analog. All digital images that we can see have been converted from digital to analog. Our senses can only perceive things that are analog.

@@MODAC The data that's the musical notes you'll hear from a music box is encoded/programed in a digital format in form of a series of pins placed on a revolving metal cylinder, or punched holes on a metal disc in case of a polyphon. To store digital data early computers used something similar, namely the punched card. Now we use electronic switching to store digital data, Not the aether as you suggested. lol "Our senses can only perceive things that are analog". The image that you see on your screen is digital as its made up of pixels. Put your eye up close enough to your screen and you'll see, perceive the digital framework. Our brain creates the perception of "analog", as long as there's enough resolution. And actually the physical/material reality that we're able to perceive is all digital. Our conscious experience is virtual, illusory and is basically a controlled hallucination. Perceptions only seem "analog", because our brain continuously, dynamically approximates reality as our senses and information processing capability is limited.

As someone who loves the older look of the 1980's CD players I will admit that they don't sound as good as a modern 2020+ CD player with modern DAC . I will be looking into a DAC convertor as I often come across vintage CD players at my local thrift store .

Compared to the Schitt mani, I had noticed my old school denon CD player was at a disadvantage, on the DAC alone, against vinyl, so I've always wondered if a dedicated external DAC would level the plain field. Then this video popped up this morning :)

I have a Denon DCD 1520 with the Burr Brown DA converters and the sound is superior to that of the Schitt Modi 3 when I compared the two.

My personal phono stage experience, Sansui AU 717 has a great DAC. Denon 4802r has a good DAC. Both top level Machines of there time, 70’s & late 90’s I’m still running the Denon. The Schiit Mani takes the Denon to the AU717 level of sound. Great product.

Well, I wish I knew there's no Direct Sound, but six different filters that are very hard to tell apart from each other; maybe in the long run the Schitt might just be less impressive, but more "honest". I can see an improvement in sound "textures" from synths on pop and electronic music by bringing all sounds forward. On the positive, you do hear every single sound right in front of you, but by throwing image and soundstage out the window and possibly faster fatigue. Rock, and acoustic music do not benefit at all. If anything, it made me realize how good my system already was, at the very least I can tell it wasn't an improvement, much less over vinyl. I was so close to request a return, but I'll probably just keep it for EDM enjoyment. I'd love to hear from anyone who can compare the soundstage between the Topping and the Schitt, maybe I ought to do it myself.

First time I’ve ever heard an Arcam CD player from the 90’s alpha range described as harsh and fatiguing. I had a 7SE, Grandad had an 8 and Uncle had an 8SE. All with different amp / speaker combos. The alpha range were renowned in reviews for having a lush, slightly smoother and more analogue bias to the sound and they sold stacks of these in the UK because of this. This is why it really surprises me as I found the reviews to be true when I did auditions before buying mine at the time and all models I heard had the same trait. Perhaps there’s something else in your setup which is causing this and the other CD players are being enhanced by this artificial brightness? Just a question. Otherwise great review

Hello, I recently picked up a RED colored e30 with the intention of using my old but extremley fast reading CD player (Pioneer stable platter PD S07). It has only optical out and is connected into the toslink optical input on the topping. All disc's played (and sound great!) will randonly seem to skip every so often (The CD's are not skipping this is a clock/jitter issue with the topping DAC digital input) connecting same player with same cable to the built in DAC on my budjet Onkyo 9010 amp no issue. Tried 3 different cables, hooked a more recent Denon DCD 800NE via optical into the topping, no issue but don't want this paired to the topping at it sounds great on it's own just slow as sh it compared to the Pioneer at reading CD's. Disappointed. I am reading this issue is getting more notice and read a responce a person posted elsewhere that Topping don't recommend using this e30 dac with CD Players! Right now, I ordered an optical to coxial adapter and new Amazon branded 1M digital cables to see if this fixes the issue. I might buy for the first time a dedicated CD transport or maybe a TASCAM CD 200 as they seem solid but need to know what make or model of CD player that don't have the issue above? update: Just tried my old 90's Technics CD player - same skipping issue. :( From Amazon UK: Note: Topping factory does not recommend connecting the E30 to the CD player, because the E30 has high requirements on the input of the CD player. And most CD devices will cause music to stutter/ skip.

There is no substantiated or proven fact about what you allege. In the Digital domain, either you get all the bits from one end to the other, with(out) errors or you don't get the bits at all. So a decent, cheap Coax cable will WORK EXACTLY as a expensive one. That's the beauty of digital.

@@sonusancti The M2Tech is a USB to Coax adaptor. It goes in a USB A port of the Mac, and has a SPDIF RCA coax output that connects to an external DAC.

Yes digital files even on non cd formats take up space since they'll be saved on flash storage....

Digital files have virtually no mass or volume. The devices they are stored on do take up space. In streaming, the storage devices are usually a long distance away.

Would be curious to hear your thoughts on any of Schiit’s multibit DACs. The Modi Multibit, for example, retails for $250, and to my ears gives a much more organic/“analog” sound than any other DAC I have tried. I also hear amazing things about Denafrips DACs, which use a similar technology.

I've got a Sony system (all thrifted). Whether I use the 200 cd player, dvd player, or blueray they sound about the same. I get better sound with the cd downloaded to computer and output thru my old Scott receiver. Going to try this Topping unit. Thanks

Hello. I bought in the last days a vintage CD Player (Titan CD420) but this one have only RCA output and not digital out. In this case I can't use an external DAC right? Or are there others way for connecting an external DAC? I am a totally noob in this world, sorry xD Thank you.

Nope. You’re stuck the the internal DAC. I would not consider a CD player without a digital output.

Nice vid. As I was watching, I was going to ask you if you had compared the the Schiit and you went and did it. I have a Bifrost 2 and I like it, but I need another cheaper DAC and I’ve trying to figure out which to buy. This DAC is on my radar along with the Schiit Modius. I don’t use Balanced so I don’t know if that’s the big selling point for the Modius.

Thanks for the reply. I have watched his videos. He’s good. Am I wrong thinking balanced makes more of a difference for headphone users? I have pretty nice vintage equipment I can’t bare to part with. It’s all single ended. Since that’s the case, I was wondering if the modi 3 would be the way to go.

I was just listening to my 27 year old Pioneer PD-F805 50-disc CD Player and I really can’t see the need to buy another CD player right now. I was listening to a cd I have had for over 20 years and it honestly sounded beautiful. My integrated amp is a Marantz PM8006 and my source the CD player is running through is a Marantz NA6006. Can anyone tell me if I should really be considering buying a Marantz CD6007 player at this point? Would it sound that much better than what I have?

Why would you connect your CD Player to a DAC, when you can plug it directly into your amplifier. Is there any sound difference if you did not plug the CD Player into the DAC vs. directly plugging the CD Player into the amplifier? I am now confused. I always plugged my CD Player directly into the amplifier with no issues, but now that the DAC came into the picture, I feel like I may be missing something.

Your CD player has a dac from the era when the player was produced. The signal travels through it before it reaches your left and right RCA cables heading to your receiver or preamp. If your cd player has toslink or coaxial outputs, you can bypass the internal dac, and use a more modern dac. This COULD result in improved sound.

I have one question: I don't have a CD player, I either streaming from my PC, or play MP3/flac files or play CDs from my DVD drive on my PC, and feeding these into my old school vintage amps. Would a dedicated CD player sound better than a PC DVD drive, both feeding into a DAC like the Topping E30?

Yes, a CD player is superior. A computer is not a great audio device compared to a dedicated audio component. I would look at some of the other Topping DACs like the D50s or a Schiit Modi 3+.

The filter settings do make a difference. I prefer the slow roll off mode 2. The e30 is on mode #3 Short Delay/Sharp Roll off by default. I find sharp roll off too nervous for my taste. The Filters are built into the AKM 4493 chip so other DAC's with the chip have them too if the manufacturer chooses to make them available. I have the SMSL Sanskrit 10th mk II. It is a bit more center focussed than the E30. So I picked that one.

Good presentation. But how does it compare to the IFi Zen blue you tested recently. Slightly different functions and focus perhaps. But what about the sound comparison?

I TRIED 2 CD seperate players and the topping e30 threw a hissy fit with it's optical input skipping the music every so often. Even now topping say this junk e3o shouldn't be used with CD players! Get a similar performing DAC like the SMSL Sanskrit if you want your old CD player to work as a transport.

@@MODAC Topping changed the digital receiver chip (for digital IN) on newer E30s from AKM to CS 8416 receiver, likely due to AKM shortages. It basically now renders the E30 pretty useless for your own old CD Player (I personly have tried a few and all have skip issues) only an old sony bluray player works with coaxial but this is very slow to read discs. EVEN award winning CD transports like Audiolab 6000CDT have issues with the newer e30. Serial number 2103XXXX from what i understand the earlier releases with a different DAC chip handling spdif does not have this issue. this may be a major cause for concern for anyone who will primarily utilize spdif connections on the newer E30 releases.

Is there an audible difference when you compare using the optical digital output to the DAC vs. using the coax output going to the DAC?

My computer doesn’t have a optical output. But there really should not be a big difference. I find that audible differences in the digital domain are far more challenging to detect and describe.

I don't know why you say e30 is good, because in my opinion if I observe the development of dac from 2010 to the present, I can say the quality topping e30 is suck and I can even say a decline.... if this year e30 I paid $130 but in 2013 a product with this quality is only around $50

As you can imagine, constantly buying gear gets expensive, and takes up limited space. These new products will stimulate ideas for future videos, and I will strive to remain original and sincere. @@MODAC I understand the situation. I have a blog about vintage audio equipment where I write 2-3 reviews per year. If I would have to write 2-3 per month, I would probably do the same thing as you did. Thank you for your answer and good luck! PS: I borrowed some vintage staff for my reviews from friends and acquaintances. Maybe you have this chance too. Or maybe some of the watchers here can lend you some of their vintage staff. Of course, this is not a long time solution, just an idea to use when the moment arises.

why convert to analog at all? for the same money you get a CD-player with an optical digital output and even 12 years old avrs have optical inputs if there's room-EQ or proper dynamic loudness in the chain it is idiotic doing analog conversion outside which then get converted back to digital for dsp processing to again convert it to analog signal at the end of the chain so what you do is "DAC - ADC - DSP - DAC" instead just "DSP - DAC" which is nonsense

Before heading to your speakers, the signal is going through a dac, either in your cd player (if you use analog outputs) or eventually in your AVR. External DAC's CAN be of much higher quality than the ones in the cd player or your AVR. Its worth experimenting to find out.
