The latest event in the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism's speaker series was an in-depth conversation about the imperative role that investigative journalism plays in upholding a fair, just and free democracy. Merrill College Dean Rafael Lorente and the Associated Press' Ron Nixon discussed the fundamentals of investigative journalism, how it is changing and what the future holds.
Nixon is vice president, news and head of investigations, enterprise, partnerships and grants at The Associated Press. Nixon received the inaugural 2021 News Leader of the Year award from the News Leaders Association.
He has overseen investigations that have won a number of awards including: The Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and a Pulitzer finalist in investigative reporting, a George Polk Award, the Worth Bingham Award for Investigative reporting, the Selden Ring Award for investigative reporting, an Investigative Reporters and Editors Award, the 2021 Joe and Laurie Dine Award from the Overseas Press Club and the Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics, four Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards, an News and Documentary Emmy and Peabody Award, to name a few.
Nixon joined the AP in 2019 from The New York Times Washington bureau, where he was homeland security correspondent, covering border and aviation security, immigration, cybercrime and cyber security, transnational crime, and violent extremism.
