Upholstery Glues 

I just want to make a quick but I feel important comment about a very good glue available within the USA. Dap Weldwood Landau Top and Trim (light blue can label). HHR Spray Grade Industrial Professional. You cannot get this at home depot. To me this is the only glue to trust for a no comeback job that I have used. I suggest the 5 gallon container and transfer it to small containers for use or into a gun. Harbor freight has acid brushes for 30+ packs and larger 1 inch and etc brushes for very cheap. Less than ten dollars buys you over 60 brushes small maybe 0.75 to 1cm and larger sizes, I like 1 inch or about 2.5cm. 3M 90 3M 77 3M 98 Etc I believe all those glues will fail on hot days etc after a few years or months. Harbor freight also has a $21 siphon feed 1.8mm tip 1 liter / 1 quart or so gun that is cheap enough to simply throw it away after a few big covering headliner panel jobs. Note it will probably be cleanable but you will always incur some cost. Time and effort Solvent material etc I almost think it would be best to fill the gun at least 50% full and it does stay liquid and right when sealed up for a looong time. Maybe someone else here can help suggest a good cleaning tip as $21 a gun isn't expensive but it isn't cheap. Anyway, the dap landau glue is the absolute best glue I have ever used for strength and it is workable brushable and reliable. Stinky tho, prolonged exposure I'd wear a respirator. I am just a hobbyist who only has experience wrapping headliner panels and pillars. No real upholstery like Checaflo. I would love to become a master like Checaflo. I love his videos. But that glue I think is the best. A little goes a long way if you just need to "dry tack" some touch up areas inside a car. Or rubber seal. Be careful with fresh wet glue as it will bleed through. A dryer coat of glue on your brush will not bleed through and will stick really well. You'll see. The dap landau glue is not extremely snotty like Wurth Rubber Glue ($35 for a dinky lite jar but it has its place) I had a rear spoiler job to do, 85 bmw 635 rubber spoiler. I used wurth rubber glue, maybe a little aged but still very fluid and good. Maybe I didn't use enough but whatever. The job failed. Of course I offered to redo it and I decided to use the dap the 2nd time around (I actually didn't have it at the time, was at home actually) and after using the dap it has been perfect since in rain and sun. It's a factory glued down soft rubber spoiler with some integrated bolts that snug up to the trunk lid. The dap glue works great and I think for glue down weatherstripping it would be great to coat one side and let it dry and then if you need to have some workability you can just slap on a wet coat and quickly aplly the pre glued but dry to the touch component (example, trunk seal channel has 2 coats, a dry coat and then possibly a 2nd wet coat just before installing the applied and dry trunk rubber itself). I haven't done that but I expect it would give the rubber seal some good workability before it sets up to really get the seal factory perfect. This is where that wurth glue is also very good, for body rubber and etc. Anyway dap pretty much makes wurth rubber glue obsolete for me. I'm still mad I lost my can of Wueth rubber glue. It's gotta be around but it was new and 99% full... Anyway good luck gluers. That dap weldwood landau glue is fabulous.

The 'solvent based yellow glue' is a traditional adhesive or contact cement used in car upholstery and furniture. Would you like some tips from a professional car upholsterer ? 1 . Never ever use a brush or a paint scraper as you'll never get it even and you can only use the brush once then throw it away. Instead use the plastic card intended for applying body filler , they are flexible , you can work the glue deep into the surface and easily cleaned ( mine last for years ) . 2 . Only buy glue from professional auto upholstery suppliers and specify a heat resistant type. It won't cost much more and as cars get baked inside most other glues easily fail . 3 . Spray glue of any type is never as good as spreadable glue. Ok for some jobs but only buy trade quality in cans as the guns just gum up . Once again go for heat resistant. 4. Can speed up process with a heat gun ( also useful for simultaneously softening vinyl ready for stretching into areas) but need to be incredibly careful not to over heat and damage anything . Heat gun releases the thinning agent in the glue.

Did my first upholstery job today. Let me tell you, first time is much difficult compared to watching videos! Did the work in the balcony in the sun 30 C and the glue became like chewing gum, you need to only put a little in the tip of the brush and do it again and again, very frustrating. Also I used a lot of glue, almost finished a 820ml can with just one trunk bottom covering. I have two more panels to do, the trunk sides. It was very difficult because I decided to reuse the old material which has shrunk a little in the washing machine (couldn't find matching material). The glue I used is like in the video, formica glue light yellow. Thank you Cechaflo for all the videos!

It is important to note that if you use a respirator(and it IS recommended to use one if gluing large amounts), to use a respirator with the correct filter installed. A simple dust filter will not filter out vapors or fumes, you must use a filter designed for that specifically. Most filters will let the harmful vapors through quite easily.

If everyone else was struggling to know which glue to use I found out that the Dap Original Contact Cement had a better service temperature than the other glues mentioned in the comments. According to the technical data sheet the service temperature is -40 to 180 degrees F. This should cover the needs of just about any hobbyist out there. It is easy to brush on and you can reposition it as long as you don't use firm pressure. If you need to thin it to make it sprayable acetone should work but they also make a thinner specifically for it. It is also available in quart sizes instead of gallon which makes it a great option for smaller projects. Not to mention you can get it at home depot and lowes. I'd like to add that the Landau top adhesive has a service temperature of 0 to 150 deg. F.

Hey im working on re doing the foam on my car seat. i was wondering if there was a spray can glue i could use. Im able to find headliner glue from 3m and permatex . Im just not sure if this is strong enough or even OK for foam. I can find regular dap contact cement and also locktite spray on high performance 200 adhesive, but not sure it it would hold up to heat in the car. also locktite 300 spray says water and heat resistant but not sure if it would eat up the foam. If you could recommend anything that i could buy from a local store like homedepot or lowes, even walmart id appreciate it ! Thanks

Caesar, what do you use to clean your brush? Acetone? It always looks new and that brush doesn't look cheap.

How do you store your glue after using it? I opened my dap weld wood glue one day and then didn’t use it for another 2 weeks and it was dried up. How can I avoid that? Thank you.

That's for posting this. I was able to find this in America under the name Weldwood in Home Depot.

I bought new headliner material and removed my headliner and removed the old fabric and foam. I purchased the 3M super 77 adhesive for fabric. Applied it to the headliner board and to the back of the fabric and let it tack up and re coverd it and looked awsome. Re installed headliner and two days later its sagging now its been about 90 degrees here in the midwest. What should I do to fix this? Should I remove headliner and pull fabric back and use a liquid glue and apply it with a brush to the headliner board only?

Yo utilizo el mismo pegamento para aplicarlo a brocha, y cuando quiero hacerlo con la pistola lo rebajo mucho con un disolvente que disuelve muy bien el pegamento y cuando he terminado de aplicarlo, después de limpiar bien el depósito de pegamento, echo disolvente en la pistola y se queda limpia sin necesidad de desmontarla 👍👍 Muchas gracias de nuevo!

I would like to see what happens when you pull up the material, to see if all the glue ends up on both the vinyl side of the door panel, as well as on the material itself. Are you planning a follow up video. There should be glue on both surfaces if it is working correctly. It is definitely a problem trying to glue to plastic door panels. Jerry

Estoy personalizando mi auto un Renault Megane, encontrarlo en el internet para mi es muy agradable sobre todo por la calidad de su trabajo, en un principio pensé que era británico o estadounidense, por lo meticuloso y su calidad, pero por lo leído me doy cuenta que esta en México, e intuyo que es mexicano, su calidad es de tipo mundial. Estimado Cechaflo me puede recomendar donde buscar piel para mi auto, pienso utilizar combinaciones de café chocolate al naranja. Mis felicitaciones y un abrazo fraterno.
