Acting Chief Executive Officer of BADMC Frederick Inniss told reporters the Upland Rice project bodes well for Barbados. He disclosed that Barbados is a heavy importer of rice, citing figures in 2020 which showed the island imported 4.6 million kilogrammes of rice at a cost of 9.14 million dollars.
He noted that while the island is a long way off from producing all the rice it needs, the second trial of rice production set for the Pine on 15 acres of land will help to get more farmers involved.
