I took the FTDNA test. I could have saved some money, by uploading the raw DNA test results from the DNA test I took with Ancestry. Great info Larry!! This will save others $.
Oh my. Yes hopefully people will watch in time to use their current DNA for FTDNA, MyHeritage and Gedmatch and save them money. Sorry I wasn't doing this in time to help you.
At the 7:15 mark I talk about the chromosome browser and ethnicity. I was reminded that I DID pay for this as an additional item. It was a one time fee - $19.99 is the current price (i think i hit a sale for $10). The DNA matches are free, but the chromosome browser and ethnicity ARE a $20 extra one time charge.
A lot of the features you talked about on FTDNA are only available after you pay a small fee (I think $19?)... like the admixture results, chromosome browser, etc... but the matches are 100% free. :-) Definitely upload to MyHeritage, too! They have a lot of great features... and a larger database than FTDNA. Also, kind of interesting... I checked out your profile on Ancestry, and turns out one of the kits you manage ("MM") matches with my paternal uncle and my paternal grandmother! Very small match (abt. 8cM with my grandmother and 6cM with my uncle), but it's there. When I saw that a kit you managed matched my uncle, I assumed it was through the Brown lines (as you know, my direct paternal line has two adoptions, and we have Browns on that line), but nope, it's through my father's maternal line. Neat, huh?
weird my last comment didnt seem to take. now that you mention it i may have paid $10 when it was on sale to try it out as a one time payment. ill check with mothers kit and get amount and update. Thanks for that catch. I am planning on discussing myheritage and gedcom genesis options too. I know your already doing those :) M.M. is a 94 yr old lady who I am helping find her family. I have one line DOWN to her grandparents but i dont know if paternal or maternal line so could be any of the 7 kids. I know who i "think it is" based on circumstantial observation. but nothing concrete yet. if you dont mind corresponding via dnafamilytrees@gmail.com I would like to know what information and light you can share on that connection. (I have a limited time to help her so she has my top priority atm any light you can shed would be quite helpful. One side of her line is FRENCH. her final ethnicity is 51% french.
Does it cost $19 per kit to unlock FTDNA? For MyHeritige it wanted $29 per kit. I'm certainly not paying that since I have three people's results I want to look at. But I'm interested in unlocking FTDNA if $19 unlocks every kit that is uploaded.
Well, this is tricky to answer specifically because the answer changes with their promotions. MH had a period where theirs was FREE! They have done promotions for 19 and for 9 (as well as 0). look for the right timing and im sure youll get a great deal or call them and see what you can negotiate :) they are a business and any $$ is better than none :)
There are more companies you can do it for free too. Gedmatch and myheritage both offer free uploads and will give you DNA match information at no charge. Both, just like FTDNA, have addon tools for small fees that help. I will do more videos on these but wanted you to know so you can upload to those too if you want. You can use those three companies databases of matches with your ancestry DNA data without another test! FTDNA.com, gedmatch.com, myheritage.com And dont forget at 1,000 subscribers ill be giving away a free Ancestry DNA test kit to one subscriber, so dont forget to subscribe if you haven't.
Awesome video! You are right up there with Ancestry’s Krista Cowen! I have subscribed! This video was very helpful and I am going to try the FTDNA before Gedmatch because I have heard its a bit difficult to understand for those of us who are not so “Techie!”. But will eventually do it and maybe any other suggested sights. I do my tree and manage 3 others so any help to make it simpler and easier is always a bonus. I have several walls. Especially interested in the “Both” match as both sides seem to wander through the sam migration routes and I have found both sides on same census forms so that will be an interesting feature to explore! Might mention you and I share some surnames in some indirect lines! Again. Thanks for the videos! Keep them coming!
Thank you Mary! Ancestry's Christa Cowan is certainly the leader in this area and I take that comparison as very high praise indeed. Ill do my best to keep getting better and more deserving of that comparison. She is really spectacular in this field and certainly the high benchmark to try and achieve! You can actually do FTDNA, Gedmatch Genesis and MyHeritage to get DNA match clues that are not on Ancestry. I just recently moved mine to myheritage to prepare for a video on that and got several close matches (7 very close and 15 more close i think it was). Some i had identified in my tree from research, but was nice to see the CMS matches and also their children who had also tested there and not ancestry! So other site WILL get us more clues and sometimes that one we needed to break through. I will do a bit more on FTDNA and then Gedcom Genesis and MyHeritage too. Didn't want to over a single video with so much because each is very valuable in its own way. Goal is to use the DNA test we have taken and get as much out of it as possible for the least $$ :-)
Thats spot on what is upcoming, then plan to talk about each of the advantages and disadvantages and where to go for different information. There is A LOT MORE we can get for free and for small amounts on some other sites using our Ancestry DNA! if you have favorite tools on those or would like me to do an in depth on something, let me know!
I love your videos. I am just starting to watch the ones most important to me. AND I just made the first contact with a half-sibling, waiting on their DNA results to confirm the research I learned here. A question... I have downloaded my mom's DNA for her from 23&ME, I have it and want to upload it to FTDNA, do I NEED a new separate account? or can I upload it here under my current account? (downloaded from 23&Me) Genmatch let me have one account to manage multiple uploads. thx. Any tips on first-contact? I was super apprehensive in disclosing my research. Thx again.
@@DNAFamilyTrees Yes! lots of new matches, luckily a couple of 2nd and 3rd cousins for both my husband and me (already identified) so the family matching has given a few paternal and maternal matches. Thanks, Larry for this.
thank you for taking the time to let me know Lars-Olof! means a lot that you took the time to state your appreciation. Once i upload, they kind of have their own life from then on and the comments are the only feedback really, thank you!
unfortunately "are your parents related" doesn't always work. It says my 3C1R parents aren't related. If I do a 1:1 between them, it shows that they are related. Go figure.
Thank you Roxi, hopefully this along with gedmatch genesis and myheritage which also have free options and resources we can maximize what information we get AKA bang for buck! :-)
Hi Larry! Your content is SO GOOD and SO USEFUL! I won’t be able to do this process until I get home from work today. I hope I will have access it to it by Saturday. On a different topic, can I ask a huge favor? And I may be the only person who thinks this. If everyone else loves it, then please ignore me: is there any way to not have that little song playing in the background the whole time? You kept it down very low and that it GREAT, but, in my opinion, it distracts from your amazing content. I might be the only person who finds it distracting as it is looping for 20 minutes. Because I also rewatch your videos several times, it just feels like I’m hearing hold music and soon it’s all I hear. Then it gets stuck in my head for the day. Lol! Maybe it’s because it’s 7am and I’m really tired and need to get to work. 🤣🤣🤣 But, you, sir, do not need anything but your great info to be center stage. And, by the way, do any of you guys sleep? Haa ha! I saw the video at 6:45am and it already had over 100 views. Anyway, I always love to see your content come available in my feed, Larry. I try to implement everything you suggest in some form and I am always learning from you. Thank you for your knowledge and for putting these together!
Bummer! I uploaded on Thursday and I don’t have matches yet. I should have went ahead and loaded at the other sites too while I wait. Did you mention GedMatch too? I saw they are now Genesis, or something like that so I didn’t know if I should still try it.
I may be the only one who is very computer/program challenged. But could you please explain how to link somebody on FTDNA? I've uploaded but would love to know how to link so I can get more clearer understanding. Both my parents have passed so I have no way of getting their DNA's. Thanks Larry for your great videos!! You've taught so much in such a great way that even I can understand!
I will make a video of just that Julie. It confused me for a bit too. but ill tell you how here so you dont have ot wait. Upload a gedcom or manually enter a tree. Fill the tree out until it contains the match persons tree to intersect at your MRCA (most recent common ancestor). Once that is done, you can click on their name in tree and do a "link" option that assigns them to that person in your tree. From there it goes into the DNA, looks at the comparison and builds information behind the scene. The person will be from paternal or maternal side recognized by your tree. it will then start color coding commonalities of matches BASED ON DNA, not what we click to match. so youll get pink or blue by several people who share dna with you and the person. probably confusing in words. that video will be coming soon :)
That was such a good question because I was wondering why all these pink and blue dots were beside people that are my match ..now at least I know it was done by DNA ancestry ..now what color is who can you tell me that?one is blue and the others are red or pink??.. looking..
yes, you are downloading a "COPY" of the raw DNA data and uploading that information. Your original data still remains at ancestry. MyHeritage, FTDNA and Gedmatch are all useful sites to get more matches/information
Did you pay for the origins and ancient origins ? I uploaded my raw DNA about a month ago and I've still not got any matches come up it still says there not ready.
I did pay for origins I wanted to see differences in two since both use same machine in same data Help identify algorithm differences Think was on sale $10 or something
I had the same issues. I didn't see anything for the past 2-3wks. I've contacted the help desk and they said it was an IT issue. My mom results finally came through today. Still waiting on my dad.
