River Description
This description describes sections typically divided into two runs, both largely within the area that burned in the Cameron Peak fire in fall, 2020. The lower of these section - from Home Moraine down - is usually called 'Upper Rustic'. There were early reports of strainers, but this was either incorrect or the high water in May moved them.
This is a very long run with some hard rapids at the top and most paddlers actually break it down into shorter sections. There are several dangerously low bridges on the upper section of the run above Sleeping Elephant, and a low-head, hard to see dam above the fish hatchery. At normal water levels, the rapids in this section are relatively easy and suitable for intermediate paddlers with the possible exception of the 'White Mile' (or more accurately, 'the busy 1/4 mile'). The water is always cold in this and other upper-river stretches.
