This is a gem of a tutorial. One that I would put into the category of “tutorials that will unlock the mystery”.

Sometimes you hear people play and think there is some secret knowledge that you don't have access to then along comes something like this and simply and clearly opens up a whole new world. I've been playing music most of my life and this was a huge Aha! moment. Now to get to work! :D

If only we had the interwebs and people like Jack willing to share knowledge like this back in ye olde days…. The struggle was real kids, this is gold. 🏆👑🥇

Such a simple idea and yet something I had never explored. Just taking that 3, 5, 7 and looking at it as its own triad instead of as a piece of the 7th chord. Thanks for this, Jack.

The Eflat triad tablature has really helped me with 1st and second inversions. I have just been playing them over and over memorizing this pattern great video

Great stuff, i was always amazed how a Maj7 has a minor triad and a m7 has a major triad in it. Just like playing phrygian over lydian and aeolian over ionian, i believe. Love the phrasing and the melodic time and feel, thanks for your time

Thank You for this amazingly, excellent lesson! I've been noticing how triads contained in Major7th chords are also minor chords, but haven't looked closely at other types of 7th chords like you did in this lesson. The way you mapped them out and then played comping examples with the triads was really helpful! Thanks also for including that beautiful solo based on chord tones at the end. I really like your teaching style--great combination of some theory (not too much) and focus on playing and incorporating various, great sounding, fun ideas! BTW, I never knew how simple and relatively easy to play the 7th chord upper structure triads were, and so cool! One question, if you take away the 5th interval, does that leave you with a basic shell voicing? Thanks Again!

My impression is a shell voicing excludes the root, so if you’re playing a 5 3 7 interval, you’re good to go

Jack-very nice lesson. Patreon and YT Videos are great companion pieces to your Shades Of Blues on TrueFire. On a side note, you appear to be around 6’2-6’4” in height 😂. I use 4 fingers to play a minor 7th chord 😆. I can’t use my height 5’ 7” as an excuse for sour playing considering a guitar player like Prince was just over 5 ft in height. Thanks for the lessons. I would love a video on timing/tempo as it relates to soloing. For me I am working on downbeat soloing. Too often, I increase in speed to a point where I’m playing scrambled notes with no melodic character. I’m focusing on intent of notes but then my solos sound boring. Any vids on song tempo and soloing/phrasing would be helpful. Thanks Rick

Awesome video, thanks for putting this together! Personal “improv thinking” question: Do you really think “Eb triad” in your mind while your improvising over a 2 5 1 starting with Cmin ? I certainly wouldn’t… I just learn triads for the chords as-is and just learn scale notes than include the 7th degree around those triads (rather than store a second set of triads in my mind that contain extensions of the chord you’re actually playing over). I agree it’s a great learning tool, but super curious if you actually THINK upper triads like this during improv ?

Btw, this sounds awesome Jack. I wonder would you take this same approach to comping using upper structures when faced with non extended chords, say C F G. Ie would you comp with Em, Am and Bdim?

Really digging your channel Jack, just wondering how much a jazz guy has to hustle for work in Nashville? I understand that you can play anything but you seem to have jazz in your heart.

Yeah I play all kinds of gigs. I'm mostly a blues/soul player though. It's always a hustle in this town though, no matter what type of player you are.

@@JackRuch I wish you the best man, you can really play. These kind of lessons show me why stuff that I might of been playing for awhile works. The theory behind it. I'm not a big fan of jazz but learning some kinda opens up the fretboard. Thanks for for taking the time to show us this stuff

I can see the upper structure triads inside the shapes of the chords, but I was left with a question: is there a way to know what triad it is without actually seeing the chord? For example, for Cmaj7 the upper structure triad is an Em, so the min third in C major scale. Is there a formula or we have to learn the progressions and visualize those triads?
