So this is a manifestation of how people in the 1970s imagined a futuristic orchestra of the 21st century. Sci-fi prediction that actually happened.

I always thought it was weird how orchestras never adopted having at least one big analog synth in there too.

What a great video.. I would have put my trumpet down in high school to join a synth band in a heart beat..

At last! A different approach to synth music: instead of using a sequencer to endlessly cycle away while parameters are noodled someone has removed virtually all of the automatic processes & concentrated on THINKING about what happens rather than let repetition rule the roost. Bravo! Synth musicians take note! Tangerine Dream were very good at doing what they did but that approach has been VASTLY over done. This approach is far more thoughtful & successful.

+Logic / Reason / Evidence i kind of agree with you and its good to see but i cant really hear anything new in this either - tomita vangelis jean michel jarre philip glass penquin cafe orchestra etc all trod this semi classical synth route years ago but only using sequecers to enhance not dominate the compisitions.popular electronic dance music tends to over use one patch arpeggiator n sequencer riffs so we have become numb to that sound, there isnt even a song mode on most new hardware sequencers these days so what does that tell you about the modern approach to a song/instrumental structure.

I think, it would be interesting if keyboardists would bring their own speakers and use them instead processing everything through mixer.
@raidersofthelostarp
@raidersofthelostarp 7 лет назад
That was actually the original idea, to also diffuse sound with individual speakers for each player. Unfortunately we had to refrain from that due to organizational reasons.

There is just one thing that bugs me: Do you need all these people to make this sound? Most of them are doing very little. Back in the days you had one man controlling about 4 to 5 synths at once and with 4 of them and a couple of sequencers you had something similar if not better.

1:42 - 6:06 Is just awesome. The first easy part reminds me of Tangerine Dreams theme from the OST Deadly Care, and the parts from 3:15 has some similar sequencing as from the livealbum Poland by the same band. Got to love this stuff : )) It's strange to think that Tangerine Dream did almost the same thing with only 3 members 30 years ago !! Just check out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1mNratrACks.html from 1:15 and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qsApXLYXdb4.html the whole album...

You are right in saying that the composing is quite simple. Choosing not to use MIDI, the problem we had to face is that not all of the players are "virtuoso"s. We could only reharse 5 times before the performance, and never with the full line up. So we decided on a set of simple rules which could drive the composition in an interesting way albeit being simple to play and coordinate. Looking forward for more amazing symphonic complex masterworks in the future though ;D

Kindly consider making actual ‘string’ sections of the entire string choir. The programming is thus: It’s always a single sawtooth wave, single oscillator, through a FIXED filter bank (EQ) which replicates the body resonance of each instrument. The specific settings for violin, viola, cello & contrabass are all available online. Ask me if you have trouble. In general, these sounds are heavily highpassed, with very uneven resonance. Totally unlike a VCF with Key Follow. Put 10 instruments playing 1st violin. 10 playing 2nd violin. 10 cello. 8 contrabass. Pan according to orchestra seating. Each instrument has a unique pan location. All of this combined thru a convolution reverb running a good hall IR.

Thanks! As there are countless examples of synthesizers used in a one-man setup (e.g. Jarre, etc.), we were interested in exploring the sound of less exact, human interactions. We had to face several limitations regarding reharsals, etc, so we were forced to keep things simple. But I agree that it would be interesting to include more keyboard-less instruments, we did experiment a bit in the beginning when all the players are turning the FM modulation to zero.

My own electronic classical music (see my videos) has a 'symphonic' feel but can be played solo and is classically notated. Influences of Stravinsky in my track 'Lausanne' but think it still is original. Would be interested in any feedback as has not been performed yet. The synth has still not properly been used as a solo classical performance instrument.

I write classical music for synths. This video proves that just having powerful instruments does NOT make the actual music any good. In fact this video is totally emabarrassing. It is terrible music and also out of time. Hardly an advert for synthesisers.

what I don't get is this; you have all these people behind keyboards (presuming quite a few monophonic). Yet there seems to be a very minimal and thin sound to it, considering a single "toy" like the monotron can give you a massage when plugged into a PA system... the results don't seem to reflect the full sonic capacity of the instruments used. It's nice, interesting in some places... however, it hardly diminishes the sound of a traditional western string instrument orchestra (even a chamber one TBH). Overall, not really selling me the idea that synths are comparable to more traditional live instruments. Pity it feels like it fell short....

the synthesizer was the first instrument that gave a complete palette of colour/sound that musician for the first time can explore , and people encapsuled it in to a keyboard stereotypes like tempered scale and to emulate known orchestra's acustic sounds, i love the video but then when the musician is also liberated from the orchestra, for instance with sequencers...why this?
