I remember right around that time, UPS had not brought their aircraft maintenance in house yet. I was working in Phx as an aircraft mechanic and a young kid, right out of A&P school, was working on a UPS DC-8 on southwest cargo for Ryan Air. I guess there was a nose landing gear down-lock indication issue on the inbound. The kid took it upon himself to troubleshoot the problem without any knowledge of the aircraft. Essentially, he broke the over lock on the nose gear lock link and the nose collapsed. Poor kid was halfway out the wheel well when the nose gear doors got him. Poor kid. The guy he was working was a colleague at my full time job. He was a good mechanic and took it really hard. Wasn’t long after that incident that UPS brought their maintenance in house
Dang I haven't seen one of those old Bendix Wx Radars in years! What a PIA they were to keep working. I've spent alot of hours flying in DC-8-70's for DHL as a Load master and AMT. I'm very familiar with the 1st Obs n Navigators seats as a bed! 😅😅 Great video tnkx!
I used to love to watch all the freighters coming and going at Boeing Field in Seattle….757s, 727s, 747s & diesel 8s. Eventually, 767s, MD-11s, & 747-400s. DC-8s were replaced by 757s and 767s. United diesel 8s were also replaced by 757s. I remember both UAL & UPS people saying they couldn’t wait for the DC-8s to be retired. People from both of the two airlines referred to them using the same word…..disaster. They both said they were a disaster. I’m assuming that meant they’d become a maintenance nightmare, but not sure.
Very cool! Was going to get me my first and only DC-8 flight back in 2015 with a small cargo operation. Sadly, maintenance folk drove the plane into a ditch in Sharjah a week before the planned jumpseat ride and that was that :(

I was used to seeing it with the EFIS screens. Was nice when the company got rid of the analog fuel gauges. They were horrible. Miss that airplane. Was a nice fast airplane to jump seat on.
Where is the first landing ontario ca. Flight engineer said had about the same amount of fuel as the day before. Where was the landing at night.interested in the scedule the crew had thanks for video.
