UPS Driver Collapses at Front Door From Severe Heat

As record-high temperatures continue across the nation, there's a new concern for UPS delivery drivers. In Arizona, a UPS driver struggled to make it onto the front porch of a house. He then collapses and lies down for a moment to recover. The UPS worker slowly gets back up and reaches for the doorbell before stumbling back to his non air-conditioned truck. UPS says the driver is fine, adding "our package delivery vehicles make frequent stops, making air conditioning ineffective."

As a mechanic, I can promise you that making frequent stops would not cause the AC to be ineffective. It might slightly reduce its effects. But the bottom line is that UPS doesn’t want to buy trucks equipped with AC and they don’t want to pay for the extra gas costs of running that AC

It has nothing to do with the cost of gas or buying vehicles with a/c. It has everything to do with maintenance . These vehicles have to be pulled out of service to maintain and replacements have to be available. These guys make $35/hr and know what their getting into. I should know, I did it 15 years. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay in the hub. You have to start hydrating the night before and then all day. Water and Salt will save your life!

I used to work for a major package delivery company. The trucks don't have AC, and they aren't insulated. You add the heat from the sun, the physical activity, and the engine, and you find the limits of the human body quick. I've had to on multiple occasions cobble together a water mist system out of a beverage cooler and a battery powered pump to hose myself down and cool off. Before that, I was dumping bottles of water over myself and chugging down liquids just to keep up with the heat. I can only imagine how bad it much be in the desert sun.

As a former employee of UPS, I can tell you that is 100% correct none of the larger trucks have air conditioning. I used to work in the hub in Nashville and if you believe that the trucks get hot inside the hanger type facility it would easily get up to 110 in the summertime. People don't understand the conditions at times that those who work like a UPS have to go through so they can get their packages. So if you see one of these people thank them for their hard work because it is hard work

@@Userjdjddss Actually... it is. On 100+ degree day, being as active as delivery person, lifting and moving a wide variety of packages all day long, you would sweat and use up tons of water. Given they dont exactly have an easy means of refilling their water either. It is actually quite the task. But thanks so much for thinking about other people and their struggles that you've never experienced in your precious little life, Ryan. On top of the fact that water doesn't provide all the minerals lost by the body when we sweat, meaning you'd need to have another supplement as well for electrolytes, gatorade may seem like an obvious easy choice, but its not exactly cheap and its loaded with sugars. Man you just know nothing and act so confident its comical.
