Hi Melissa! Have you tried using a quinoa strainer when working with pon over the sink? It might help with the rinsing while not letting any go down the drain 😊

I was actually wondering myself if there are any companies that manufacture pots out of other, less plasticky or fume-laden materials, like maybe acrylic. I know there are composite resin pots, too, and I have some… they’re generally sold for a little higher price though. Guess it’s worthwhile. Less smell and better durability. But maybe I’m not looking hard enough. I do like the resin pots I have, they’re virtually indestructible. I’d think acrylic might be slightly more durable than plastic too, though it’s not perfect, and can scratch and look beat up after some time. All my large, outdoor plastic pots (2'-3' tall) lately are cracking due to excessive root growth! Which is great, but also irritating… if it’s a larger plant, it’s a task to repot. Plus it’s just an aesthetic inconvenience to have a cracked pot… it’s annoying! Lol. I thought they were slightly better than this. But snake plants & agaves are the two plants that I KNOW will bust a pot open, of ANY material. Anything with insane rhizome growth and asexual reproduction (pups) WILL crack plastic! 😡 ugh, anyway. Thanks for reminding me…gotta order these things! 💕

Agreed, the dexceders are the best dupes for larger lechuza pots at a better price point. I find the water meters on these are as reliable as the lechuza ones, whereas a lot of the other brands tend to get their water meters stuck.

Your el choco red is stunning! Question though - I have a few alocasias in pon and have recently upsized my frydek. I’m noticing all of them with water droplets on their leaf tips especially in the mornings. Right now they are on my kitchen table but are getting too big. I’m wanting to put them on the floor but worried about the excess water dripping onto the floors where my cats can lick at it. Any suggestions to stop the excess droplets?

Would you mind me asking. How long does it usually take for corms to sprout. And will they still sprout without removing the skin .😊
@Oohkamitama
@Oohkamitama 2 месяца назад
Corms take a few weeks before they start to sprout and it also does depend on how big the corms are. Yes, they will still sprout even if you don’t remove the outer brown skin. Base on my own experience with them, it’ll take longer for the corm to sprout with the skin still on it but the time doesn’t differ too badly.

Do you rinse only after it’s been used? Bc if you rinse before use you’ll end up messing up the time release fertilizer in there. If you’re like me and hate it anyways it doesn’t matter lol
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 3 месяца назад
Hi Jacqueline! I rinse before now - I can't stand the dust. I don't rely on the slow release fertilizer since there is no telling how much of it is actually in each pot. I fertilizer right away now :)

Yikes! That's an outrageous price for a plastic pot from China. I'd pay that for a hand-made artist ceramic pot. I get inexpensive plastic pots, dollar store, walmart etc. but prefer clear orchid pots and I make my own diy self watering with plastic syringes with the middle plunger piece removed. You could use any kind of tube though. And I use ceramic cache pots, so it works very well!
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 2 месяца назад
Sure, whatever works for you! I'm sure the inexpensive plastic pots from dollar store or Walmart and materials you need still come from china so not sure why that is even necessary to make a remark on it. It saves me time to buy a pot ready to use so I'm willing to spend the money on it.
@rebeccahenderson7761
@rebeccahenderson7761 2 месяца назад
@@plantsbymelissa You can buy whatever you like, makes no difference to me, 'my point' was only that is molded plastic (all from China inexpensive & expensive) and they shouldn't charge that much, not that you shouldn't buy them.

Hi so this question is mostly related to moss poles. I recently found spider mites in my poles and I was wondering if you can suggest what I can use to get ride of them? I am having a very difficult time and it’s not like I can undo the moss poles because the plants are extremely rooted in the poles. Hope you can help.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 3 месяца назад
Hi there! Are you sure they are spider mites? Spider mites will want to attack the foliage and not stay in the moss. They could be a type of soil mite which are beneficial as I have had them in my moss. If they are spider mites I would take the pole outside or inside if you have a tub/shower and hose it off with water to knock as many off. I would suggest predatory mites for spider mites. I would go with neoseiulus californicus.

I’ve been using the pots with the wick in them and finding that works well. It’s much cheaper for larger pots! There is no water level indicator but I just look in the hole at the bottom reservoir where you refill it. The bottoms are also still removable for when you want to flush them out.
