Kawasaki are releasing the Z900RS SE Yellowball. As a current owner of a Z900RS, I run my critical eye over the Yellowball Z900RS SE with a view to asking if they have addressed the main areas that owners universally agree need improving, and whether they should be offering the same details for the candy tone blue RS version. What will this ultimate UJB from Kawasaki add to an already good bike? What did Kawasaki miss with these updates? Are they upgrades worth it?

I think the reason they went 4 into 1 is because in the seventies everybody dumped their four into four exhaust systems and put Kirker 4 into 1s on them. I like the look a lot better than 4 into four or four into two. I have a 2020 Cafe version and I absolutely love it.

I owned a 1974 Z-1B with the burgundy metalflake and red trim; it was beautiful. I bought mine used, and the stock 4-into-4 pipes had been replaced by a Hooker 4-into-1 megaphone, and it sounded awesome, only bested by the 4-into 1 Kerker race pipe I replaced it with after several years. I like the looks of the new 4-into-1 exhaust, it reminds me a lot of the Hooker (except of course the Hooker didn't have the big half-hidden resonator underneath). I'd happily own one of these new versions.

It's a great upgrade to the current model. I love the yellow and black paint scheme, it goes with the gold wheels and forks perfectly. The candytone blue is also gorgeous and should be offered as a second colour option on the S.E. If you have the extra cash you could order it with the blue bodywork instead or get it painted. I am seriously considering purchasing the S.E so am really excited about this new model. Cheers and ride safe.

Well done ! I'm not planning to exchange my '19 Cafe for a newer RS but these mods are something I was going to do anyway. I've put SS braided brake lines on every bike I've owned and I will evaluate my liking of the braking after I've done it to my Z. As far as suspension goes, I've put 10,000 kms on it in just over a year and have been looking for signs of immediate concern which never really materialized. Yes it's just a bit lively when thrashed but nothing scary for me. The original tires are now well worn, and will be replaced with the Michelins you suggested recently. The Dunlops were shit. Kawasaki should offer tank and tail kits in various colour combinations for customers. For me, the stock exhaust sounds great and is this is the first bike I've owned that I'm not itching to change the pipe or can. Keep up the good work BMR. Hope those fires in BC end soon.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 года назад
Thanks, Laz. Agree - I've done enough mods to mine to want to keep it, although I will be sticking on a new shock and brake mc/sintered pads over the winter. The lines have made a difference, but I'm still not feeling that initial bite I'd like. The bike fits me like a glove; a candy tone blue or red/gold would have tempted me, but I fear the control tower would have objected. As it is, the yellow is not enough to enter into a marital debate! The fires are still nuts - no significant rainfall in over 90 days now, although tomorrow is a 60% chance of showers...fat chance! Cheers.

I weigh in at 230 and recognize what the Z900RS was designed to do. I ride it as such and don't expect it to perform like a ZX10. For my $$, it works great. For those who want and can afford the SE model, God bless you; me, I say it's overkill. YMMV. Good on Kawi though for listening to its owners.

Nice work putting this video together. Very nice. I have an RS, 2018. Recently installed the Michelin’s sport 5s. Incredible difference. Confidence inspiring. I also installed the delkevic 4-4 exhaust. Looks great however it seems to have lost some mid-range torque with the pipes. I’m old so no worries there as the bike has more than enough spunk for my cruising. I find the front brake is fine. The rear brake is disappointing. I use it frequently. Possibly a spillover from mx riding in my youth. Maybe I’ll look into steel brake lines and pad upgrade. Thanks again for a phenomenal video.

I hope they have gone over the throttle. I saw many say the RS has snatchiness when applying throttle, when coming out of a corner. ......... I saw your vid where you said you had your bike throttle re-tuned for a lower warm-up tickover. I think you said the throttle was smoothed out too, and snatchiness gone. I hope Kawa sorted that. Like you say, the throttle needs work on the stock RS; Kawasaki have not stated that they have remapped/smoothed the fuelling. If not, that is a shame. I’m really liking the blue and gold model, but I’m not a big fan of the gold forks on the SE, personally I’d like the standard black ones more, but the upgraded shock and brakes is a excellent move. I wonder if Kawasaki did watch the forum for ideas of what people were doing to their bikes, I think that the forum for the Zed is a selling point in itself for the wealth of knowledge and the community that comes with it. My other bike is a cb1000r and the forum for that bike is abysmal, you get a post or a comment on a post a couple times a week where the kawi forum pages are constantly being discussed, I’m seeing more and more Z900rs’s around and I not surprised, it’s such a fantastic bike and the power delivery after being flashed is perfect for city street or backroad riding.

Agree, OTown, the forum is a massive resource for the RS, and I'm sure that any company worth their salt would be delighted to get some free consumer feedback/R&D when developing their products. Scanning the forum the dissatisfaction with the the brakes and shock stand out as two of the most common complaints: not only that - possible remedies/mods are posted for easy R&D solutions. When did you get the CB1000R? Sounds like a lovely bike too - Andy Man Cam has one and loves it. Cheers.

@@BlueMarbleRider picked up the the new black edition about a month ago now, and I've put about 4000km on it. I do like the bike, its faster and is better handling than the Zed, but doesn't start making power until over 6000 rpm, so its still got a little bit of the fireblade spirit left in the engine. The fit and finish is excellent and I think its one of the most beautiful bikes available right now. There is not much of an aftermarket for it though and I obviously like to mod my rides a little, there are no ecu flashes available, you cant even change the sprocket sizes without getting an error on the dash, and as I mentioned there is not much of a forum presence of people modding their bikes other than a full exhaust and a rapidbike or powercommander system. I love the modern styling though and the quickshifter is fantastic, but I still get more attention when out riding the Kawi.

the Dunlop's are fine when they had worn out replace them i went for Bridgestone sports touring t32. brakes are more than adequate honestly the engine braking is so good. little need for the back brake in normal road riding. I bought mine after the 2018 launch the first in Hong Kong. You get the same feel of wonderments riding this after 3 years of riding as you did on day one. I bought the lower seat its dam uncomfortable after an hour of riding keep the original seat on your bum will thank me. no manufacture comes close to the quality of the paint work on the tank the bike comes with a custom paint job. i know little regarding suspension drove it out the shop on the factory setting never changed anything. the bike takes 2 adults easily if you are going to be riding with a partner this is probably one of the best bikes to buy. Had to sell my original Z900rs as leaving hk to uk Getting my next 900rs as soon as i get back to uk.

That is a beautiful bike. I had a 2016 T120, which I modified quite a bit and absolutely loved it, but this is something else. My only quibble would be no rear shocks. I just think they are part of the retro look, especially in gold to match the rest. One other question would be luggage. I know you can strap things to the seat etc but some matching luggage would be the dogs. Great review!

I bought the original version in 2018. I had the suspension professionally set up and put decent tyres on it. You are right the OEM tyres were dreadful. I put Streetpilot 4s on it and when the time comes to change, I'll put Road 5s on. Do I see anything here that makes me want to upgrade? No, not really. Like you, I like the blue finish but if I was to change, I'd want the suspension and brake upgrades, but don't like the yellow. The one I have has less than 5k on the clock, looks like it just rolled off the dealer's floor and brings a grin to my face when I get on it. I think I'll keep it.

I agree totally with your sentiments, Mark: it's a nice upgrade, but if I want them, I bolt the brakes, shocks and master cylinder on myself, as the yellow doesn't really appeal. Yes, that blue and yellow/gold is some lovely eye-candy, but, like you, my bike looks showroom and I love it. Cheers.

So to get it to where it should be in the first place, you have to pay a fair amount extra. This is an admission that the original parts were inadequate. Doesn't make me very happy. In the end, I think it would be cheaper to buy a standard version and pay for aftermarket parts and still save some money, unless you just like this paint job better. I prefer the blue myself.

For me, the only thing about the original this "fixes" is the rear shock, front brake, which, together with the fuelling (which hasn't been changed to my knowledge) are perhaps the two weakest areas of a great bike. The ohlins and brembos are nice though. Thanks for the comment.

Heck, I'd be an owner of a BMW adventure if my knees weren't two feet past shift footy/peg, cost be damned. I had a '74 in the candy apple...green or called yella? ~ Fresh of a 125 on/off Suzie, nobody told me it wasn't an adventure bike, and couldn't lean out of certain death too fast curve popped up. (knocks wood) yoiks! brake reservoir itself is a deal breaker unless they make a phone/tunes attachment jobbie. Radar detector holder? ahem, back in the day what sold me in '73 rag article was the author named it effortless. That it was. At 6k it came to life as near an electric drill setting speed...for its day of course. twas 60 in first gear. blah blah blah, ears over ankles as skiing, mild off roading..grassy short cuts was my 465# of mother's worry at eighteen. Zed? wat dat? It was already named Effortless. KZ1000's looked lame to me, but the great sound was reminiscent.

….I loathe that colour, but then I brought the first released iteration back 2018 in the Jaffa, which is what us Aussie’s call the Root-beer. I have spent an extra 5k at least on the bike. I will do further upgrades to the rear shock and front internals. I do wonder about pricing here in Oz the standard RS is 18k ride away. Someone tried to tell me 20k for the SE, which seems way to close to the standard RS to make sense, I’m thinking north of 23k, I don’t know if that makes it a harder sell. One thing for sure, if they leave those dreadful Dunlop’s on the SE it makes a joke out of all the upgrades…
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 года назад
Yes, I'm not a big fan of the colour, but love the upgrades to the SE. Currently, before PDI and taxes in Canada the 2021green and gold is $13.5K. I'm guessing the 2022 will be $15.5K - 16K which seems high for the type of bike. But I guess this is competative when you look at the R9T base which starts at...starts at $17.5K over here, but more expensive than the base speed twin $14.2K. I think it may be a harder sell...particularly, as you say, with those Dunlops. I do hope it is succuessful though, as it bodes well for future mods. Cheers.

I'm sure this is now a better bike, but I can't help but wish Kawa had not gone the gold-anodised fork and yellow-rear shock-route; the earlier model looks better in that it's more retro, IMO. Couldn't the forks have been a polished aluminium-look, and couldn't Öhlins have been convinced to run a small series of blacked out or silver shocks for Kawasaki, more in keeping with the original z1? The suspension components now look too modern for my taste. Also the wheels are not my thing; preferred the previous ones.. And I hope Kawa leave the Candytone Blue version coming out as is..
