I came here today to look for details on the double upright bass. I found a neck @ Salvation Army last week and want to build a non-standard body from a cojon (wood box drum) and add a bass drum pedal for a fun party instrument. The Upton is a beautiful instrument and I am glad I found you today!
that's why i have the removable nexk on my super karr (4/4 size) bass. if i have to fly and can't procure a reliable rental is a good reason to get one. BUT, the bass has all if not more sustain than a traditional neck. there is just as much wood on wood in the neck joint as a traditional bass PLUS an aluminum adjusting mechanism that maybe makes the neck even more of an intrument which produces a robust , resonating tone
and the adjustability for string height on the gig with the neck is amazing , since it DOESN'T affect pitch! Just played a wedding two weeks ago where i played the Bottesini elegy for the ceremony and jazz trios for the reception...my adjustable neck bass was getting a tune-up and i sure wish i had had it because i couldn't get the string height to be a good compromise between the two portions of the evening.
Love this idea and this system. A tip for travelling bassists - buy yourself a spare bridge, a spare tailpiece pin, an extra hex tool - basically any of the parts and pieces which could be broken, cracked, or lost in transit, for whatever reason. The bridge in particular- I've had them (not Upton specifically - I'm talking in general) crack in a day or two off the bass. With an hour until showtime, you're probably not going to be able to round up a spare upright bass bridge that will work at your local Guitar Center. If you rely on any kind of pickup system - this advice goes double. Two - or three - of everything. Transducer....cables.... batteries.... whatever. Something not working will ruin your night and maybe your career - so bulletproof whatever you can.
You guys would be horrified to see the condition of my double bass I've been playing since 82...that being said I am in dire need of your help to see what I've been missing. Can I visit you guys for either a restoration or talk me into giving it up for a trade on a new or used up right?
