If your account is new, upwork change their policy. Upwork no longer gives 50 free connects when you create an account. Based on their new policy, you have to purchase 100 connect first using $ 15. Or subscribe to their freelancers plus program using $20.

That's a good point! Please try doing solo projects for your self that displays your skills and include them in your portfolio. And if you can find opportunities for an internship that will be great.
