Paul explores the deep-seated problems with our current food system, and the devastating effects this is having on our environment and our health. Paul and the team at Farm Urban believe that by embedding aquaponic systems (where fish and plants are grown together in a closed-loop ecosystem without soil) into the fabric of society they can engage and inspire people to connect with their environment, explore their relationship with food, and start to build a sustainable and resilient food system
Paul's Doctorate at the University of Liverpool had a particular interest in genetic research called “epigenetics.” He discovered that the choices we make over the course of our lifetime can actually alter the way some of our genes are expressed. With simple, transformational practices we can enhance our health and vitality. His message is clear and powerful and will change the way you look at food and your environment.
Paul’s research clearly pointed to the damaging effects of enviromental conditions on our health. Empowered by this knowledge Paul felt compelled to establish eco startup Farm Urban, a research lead community focused social enterprise. Farm Urban uses aquaponics and hydroponics food production systems to engage and inspire people to connect with their environment, explore their relationship with food, and empower them to make positive and informed choices. Paul’s time is currently split between Farm Urban and his academic research at the University of Liverpool.

My thoughts exactly. That’s why we ought to convert our front lawns into gardens and try to overgrow as many lawns as possible!!

Great talk, I walk about 5meters with my scissors in my hand and my picking bowl in the other, I go to my spinach in my almost square foot garden and prune off the outer leaves, no pesticides, no waste, straight to my kitchen to use. That's just one of the veggies I grow, so I share a little bit with the insects, but so that proves it's good.

Just started to watch this very good, how ever you do show how meat is produced mainly in America and other countries, not in the UK we do not use hormones, how ever I understand you are taking a broad look across humanity and its production. Very good well done..

Moving the farming from rural and natural areas to the cities that have higher rates of co2 emissions and some greener fields in urban areas can reduce all that. Also it should empower every urbanite in knowing that they can grip on every small town into their bidding. And if they refuse to play ball, embargo these folks until compliance is applied.

Great! Absolutely right! We should really stop to be so greedy. We should start to eat to live, not live to eat.

I like the idea of aquaponics but I think he needs to look into the food the fish eat. How sustainable it is and what it is made of.

You have good point. I pay more attention to what isn't said than is said. looking into that is more revealing. Many things are not said for good reason.

Ideally the fish could eat some kind of sustainably sourced food item. Could be insects, worms, some unsold protein rich product? Could vary as the farmer can source it. Would be more challenging but worth looking at for sure. Who knows fish nutrition here?

Why do we always present the problem with population growth as a given. We have the ability to curb our population. Education, health, financial incentives, maybe get rid of the child tax credit here in the states. If you think its socially fraught to try to control the population wait till the true cost of not controlling it on our societies and the planet hit their stride. This is just the beginning and the problems are converging exponentially.

He makes a lot of points, but not all are true. I agree that food production needs to be done locally and on a smaller scale. Less transportation costs and fresher food. Are you willing to pay more for your food? How about triple? I can grow heads of organic lettuce and transport them to the local grocery store, but not for 24 dollars a week. If you want a high quality product get ahold of the grower and buy in bulk. Learn how to can or freeze in a years worth of quantity all at once when the crop is in season. I use a jar of pickles every other week. So I just canned 30 jars of bread and butter pickles. I canned 5 cases of salsa. I froze over 150 ears of corn. All from my own garden. Look at what you can do, not what's wrong with everyone else.

> "Are you willing to pay more for your food? How about triple?" Why would it cost more? Almost everything about an urban farm like this makes it cheaper to run than the average farm.

i dont know how it is expensive when all the food is recycled, excess & wasted food>fish food> fish eats it> fish waste> plants fertilizers, so where is the expensive part it is a very efficient cycle.

I don’t like how the entire research argues that world population rises to 10 billion etc but at the same time what about the statistics in European countries that are predicated to sustain its population.. it is not those countries that grow .. it’s wrong and weird that this is said all the time !!!!?
