This short film (20min) invites you to learn about the construction of modern Lisbon in the 19th century, from the perspective of the urban history of science, through the latest research carried out by researchers from the Inter-University Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT). This film is part of the project "Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) knowledge: Made in Portugal", coordinated by Ana Duarte Rodrigues, and created with the aim of promoting scientific and historical dissemination, making CIUHCT's research accessible to a wide audience.

Really surprised to see some of the comments here. This is a fascinating video, the only one of its kind I've found on a European city that is available on youtube. Would love to see more of this kind of thing analysing in more depth the visions and planning that lead to the modern cities.

Construction of a false narrative, they want to rewrite history of Lisbon showing it was modern and vibrant, construct an image that can be sold to foreigners. Lisbon in the 19th c. was poor, still mostly rural in the suburbs and extremely backward compared even to medium European cities. We can't built history with myths or with what we would had wanted the past to be. And Portugal tend very often to do this...

What said here was false? I think what is false are the far right and far letf narratives where Lisbon almost didn't exist or had nothing before Salazar or before the revolution. In fact the last 50 years were almost lost years if not getting back in time in some aspects.

It is frightening how you deal with the subject, especially by putting your socialist political nuance to the subject. After the murder of King Charles and his heir, a crime perpetrated by socialist liberal anarchists, the city of Lisbon took many years to recover and half return to the splendor it had during the monarchy...unfortunately for Portugal it was the murder and the fall of the monarchy in the hands of the liberal socialist republicans was the end of an era....

For the conservative right the concept of modernisation is terrifying. According to Elizabeth Wilson ( the sphinx and the city) urban modernisation threatened traditional patriarchy- so it is only natural that the traditional patriarchy vehemently opposed Urban modernization

Liberal and Socialist are two completly different things. They were liberals in the classical meaning of it, they were for free market and strong private sector, limitation of state's power, separation between state and church and more individual freedoms.
