We travel to a congested urban area and discuss urban survival problems and solutions. Situational awareness and an urban survival mindset are key to staying safe and protecting the ones you love. EDC (everyday carry) options, personal protection and other urban related tools are discussed. Finding a safe place to shelter and sleep can be challenging in cities but it can be found if you know where to look. We will discuss several options for clean drinking water as well.

Serious advice from an extremely experienced urban cyclist: Other than in an extreme situation wear a reflective vest on that bike. You want to be as visible as possible. If, God forbid, someone does hit you take it as a given that their insurer will try to get a finding that "you contributed to the accident" because you failed to make yourself adequately visible. i.e. You were negligent. It being America, I wouldn't care to bet on a courts decision either way in the matter. There was a case in the U.K. The insurer tried to make that argument. They lost because it came down to the fact that there is no requirement in U.K. that a cyclist must, unlike other countries like France, wear a vest. It "advised" that you should do so, however it is not "required" that you do so. There's a massive legal difference between the two.

High visibility vests are great for blending in with day laborers too especially if your hiking boots are just plain brown or black "workman" style, also don't forget that a multitool with the right parts can turn wire and strips of metal like windshield wiper inserts into tools.

You make a very valid point. Having an ebike like that during a terrorist attack like 9/11 could help you flee that very congested area faster or some other emergency situation. I might have to reconsider an ebike after you underlined that reason.

you may want to ''arm'' those fat tires from flats!... there are a few products to buy, but nothing beats the good old safety belt... get your hands on some used old safety belts from old cars [for free] and cut'em to size, place them inside the tire between the tire and the tube, use shoe-glue [rubber glue] to keep'em in place, usual one layer is enough, but for those fat tires you'll need two layers to cover all that inside surface, any overlap keeps it in the middle, place your tire to the wheel, and then the tube as usual, and your tires will never have a flat again... unless a valve failure or a ''dino'' bites them... I also like to share one of my little secrets... it's about treating wounds and burns... look for ''Gentian Violet'' it's an extract from a plant called Gentian, that thing is pure magic... stops the bleeding, prevents infections by killing all germs and most importantly it speeds up to 5 times our body's natural healing process... and that last one makes it the best treatment for the worse burns... but it stings first time applied, not so the second time, so bite a stick!... and never NEVER drink it or use it internally, only externally... you may end up ordering it online because for obvious reasons they don't sell it in pharmacies... I know I couldn't find it in Australia, so I got it from Europe... just Google 'Gentian Violet' and you'll find it... this little thing is a MUST I've treated so many burns and wounds on me and other people you wouldn't believe ... and share that last one with J.J. when you see him! I've already told him the ''seatbelt'' trick...

Too many people prepare for the cool and easy things. Stacking up on stuff to barter, but do they know the rules to barter in a safe manner? Buying all kinds of gear, but can they repair their gear (fe. repair shoes, fix minor electric and mechanical issues)? Buying guns and learn how to use them properly, but can they actually take care of gunshot or stab wounds?

Survival is not the business has become... it's also extremely ''private''...It's nothing like a weekend at the lake, the desert, or up the mountain with my buddies, etc... fixing everything broken including yourself is important... I recently moved to a different continent, and I'm learning all over again about plants, herbs, fish, fungi, and new dangers like poisonous snakes, insects, plants, etc... it took me a lifetime to learn the European, and now I'm learning the Australian... I'll always choose bladed weapons over firearms because I can fix, build, replenish by my self, hunting/trapping animals is one thing... fighting ''zombies'' another... but you know what? I'd rather practice my skills on weekends for my own pleasure... than put'em to ''the test''... I like the world as it is... I live in it!

If leaving by car and you see some traffic, go another way. A gridlock never starts with a lot of traffic, it starts with a few cars, and a few more behind that, that little traffic will lead to a gridlock during a time when everyone else is also trying to get out.

For that urban bugout scenario, you'd do well with: - A small grey man style backpack - A small camo tent in case you want to hide out in a small wooded area - A silcock key for getting water from industrial buildings (cheap on Amazon) - An electric bike (cheap on Amazon) - And then of course, a way to start fires, some freeze dried food packets, MREs, small med kit, etc. I have all of this stuff, but never really thought about putting them all together as a purpose built kit. Good video, lots to think about. And yeah, you're a good looking guy, but I'm better looking.

A small pair of bolt cutters will chop barbed wire way better than fencing pliers. When we purchased our place it was infested with old rusty barbed wire and it’s all cleaned up now. I’m sure that in an urban setting the small bolt cutters would be the tool to make a way through cyclone type woven wire fences.🤔

You should get some magnetic signs that say landscaping or whatever to camo the truck. A safety vest hard hat and a clipboard can make you almost invisible.

I liked the way you gave a couple of ''covered'' advice [more like hints] without mentioning anything... the moment the SHTF, is game over, no rules applied, but is not time yet ... I remember when the lockdowns started here in Melbourne, it took me a couple of weeks to go out shopping for supplies [I'm always full of all...] and I found the meats all gone!... I laughed... I can trap so many things inside the city... even more outside! [ I always count trapping over fishing/hunting in SHTF... more stealthy...] People all over the world were hoarding toilet paper... and in the States, you were hoarding guns and ammo... I guess that tells everything we need to know about the world we live in... some wanted to stay alive... and others to keep their buts clean [that's more than a metaphor...] anyway ''zombies = hostiles'' let's hold on to that...! act like you're in panic is the best urban-camo in SHTF

Where I live I'm close to a homeless shelter and I've been studying and becoming friends with some of the people I even did a experiment where I became homeless and spent 6 years living on the streets and it's crazy how many people you see and no one even looks twice at you a good percentage of homeless people can just melt into the environment around them but there's some that unfortunately cause issues or don't keep things clean that makes it harder

A quick tip on leather gloves; turn them inside-out, to have the sueded side on the outside. The smooth finish cuts/scratches much more easily. The suede side seems to be almost self-healing.

I suggest the newer "hybrib" tire for bicycles now. They're "dual terrain" and don't wear down on asphalt/sidewalks like trail bike "knobby" tires do. And they actually do well on asphalt/sidewalks.. PGA makes a very good purifier using the "flocking" method.( I thinks I spelled that correctly) It binds all of the nasties together into just a big solid clump.(clean drinking water in 30 minutes) . One packet does 10 litres also.Just my opinion. Any comments are welcome.

Yes to the bikes. Your truck is a great tool - until an oil embargo hits. Look up 1973. Make sure everyone in the family unit has a couple of pairs of good walking shoes, a variety of backpacks, and a bicycle for each. As much as possible, get bikes with the same components. Take the bikes apart and put them back together. Do it as a family to build skills. Buy all the tools needed to do that. Download all the manuals for the various components (for when the powers goes out). Stock up up on spare parts (during covid bike parts were hard to get). Again the more components are the same, the less back up you need. Buy or build a couple of bike trailers to haul water, firewood, and supplies. After SHTF transportation is going to be important, but gasoline will be scarce and the less often you have to go out and get it the safer you will be. Look up 1973.

I've spent a good part of my life walking or riding a bicycle. I've done back to back 75 mile rides, and have walked 25 miles overnight. If you don't do it regularly it is really tough. Since retiring I've been walking the dog. I'm up to eleven hundred miles a year wearing a 20-25 pound pack. Even at that, I couldn't do a 25 mile day on foot yet. One thing about the skinny high pressure tires, is there is very little rolling resistance. You can get places much faster, and if you have to walk short distances, you will still be faster than those noisy knobby tires. Those electric bikes will be hard to throw/carry over a chain link fence. In addition to the shoes, Throw in a pair of socks. A long walk is easier if you can change your socks half way. You can also use them to wipe your ass. ME, I wouldn't sleep behind anywhere in the city. I would not sleep unless I was well out of the city. I don't carry a multitool, I find them limited. While out with the dog I carry a folding knife, an adjustable wrench, a screwdriver with 7 bits and a pair of pliers. In small town Iowa I've used this stuff helping kids with bicycles. I write all this from personal experience.

When I go into any city, but especially when I used to live near Atlanta, I would make sure my car was dirty before I drove into town. A clean car is going to get robbed. A dirty car with some dings gets ignored. I was only in Atlanta for a job. Got out of the entire state at the moment I retired.

I am furthest from home when I work - 16 miles. I have a decent get home bag. Good shoes are paramount. I work in scrubs so spare clothes are a must, including a thermal base layer, skull cap & boots for winter. I’m not keeping an e-bike in my mid-sized SUV.

Good advice about the gloves. Actually, every emergency/survival bag needs to have _some type_ of hand protection, in my opinion. Even if your plan is to duct tape your fingers and palms. There's two things most people have that, if they can't fully function, would be seriously detrimental to surviving: feet and hands. Recently, I got some fine-hair "stickers" embedded in my fingers (WITH leather gloves on) while out in the wild. That made the use of my hand/s fingers very uncomfortable. Luckily, I just upgraded my EDC with some very small tweezers (Swiss Army Knife type). Problem solved. Great footwear, gloves, and the most unsexy, portable, mobile shelter - AN UMBRELLA; you can be highly mobile - and "get off the X" of the urban environment, then transition through suburban/rural areas.

You are a sexy man….that being said the small town idea is every bit as bad as a big city. I live in a small town, the district has maybe 32000 the town itself is maybe a half to maybe 2/3 of that. We had an outage a few years ago. The power plant “caught fire” and knocked the power out of probably a 25 sq mile area. Took out a lot of homes, 2 sm cities, 4 sm towns, as well as outlying areas. We were coming in from a call around 1900-05 Getting ready to log off after a 36 hr shift, and the lights in the station dimmed off then came back on. Me and my partner just looked at each other like ‘crap…hope that TA isn’t in our call area’. Around 1915-20 everything went off. So we said screw it, called dispatch and logged off a bit early, around 1945hrs. I live 2.4 miles from the station, in the country. Tried to call my wife…all cells were out. So I headed home. We literally have 2 traffic lights in town, not counting the flashing red at a 4 way stop, and the one that was out had an officer trying to control traffic, because everyone was streaming out of the Savemart. He was almost hit 3 times just in the time it took me to move up 4-5 cars. People were screaming at him and each other. Other, more unsavory types, were just milling around. It was a ridiculous scene. Maybe 15-20 min after the power went out. So never think it can’t happen in your town. People have become so “civilized “ and comfortable that they’re minutes away from going feral if they can’t watch their kitty and doggy videos.

There's an open sewage ditch in our town that opens up right next to the middle school a block from the police and fire stations, two blocks from City Hall. It's full of bullfrogs, turtles, minnows and crawfish. So frogs are not an indication of potable water.

11:53 behind you, appears to be a yellow ladder. Not to give away all my tricks...but, for certain scenarios, a little rooftop camping _could_ be an option. I wish some brave RU-vidr would try it. If one is careful not to be seen (e.g. going up or down), I bet they could spend a long time before being caught.

I have ridden unsurfaced trails with a std road bike on 25mm tyres. With 28mm rubber I can tackle mtb trails that scare newbies . With 32mm rubber you can tour the world.

Big cities often have significant populations of homeless peop---er, excuse me, unsheltered humans, and they seek out those same sorts of wooded or bushy areas you are eyeing for overnight shelter. Not sure I want to have the wrong guy or guys stumble onto my camp when he's looking for one for himself, or find I was in "his spot". I'd probably look for someplace like the roof of a building; not a grocery store, pharmacy, or gas station but something no one would be gravitating toward in a disaster, maybe an office building or the sort of strip mall that's full of beauty parlors and karate studios and such. No one is going to be looking for resources there when there's so many juicier places to go. And I'd be up high, could see around, and if there's just one climbable spot it's defensible. Meanwhile I could always drop off anywhere on the other side if I had to scram.

Except that in an EMP event your electric bike will be just as dead as every modern car. I know you can still peddle them without power but that's going to be a hard slog, those bikes are overly heavy if you don't have the advantage of the motor.

Unless you’re in close proximity to ground zero an EMP will not effect electronics more than cycling the power for a device off and on. People are way too focused on the highly unlikely prospect of an EMP.

Jason Google Earth map your way out save it and print a mini map iv done this to my area of city I just moved into ...video recon .I.e Google earth by studying it your mind will pick up where you need to go . Also pin on your mini map all food water thrift store s and such ya know pull the map out and water oh theres a Creek over 3 sts life straw or two
