Gawdat sounds so kind. He speaks with such eloquence. I just love listening to him talk about AI. Please keep warning us about what needs to be done to keep our children and grand children's future safe.
First time watcher/listener here. Thank you so much, James, for being such a gracious host by listening to a your guest at an AMAZING capacity. I can’t remember the last time I recognized the beauty of such stunning humility, attention, and appreciation. Happy New Year to you, good sir.
That’s so nice of you to say. I had one commenter say yesterday that I should go and learn how to interview and ‘roast my guests like a BBC interviewer”. I really appreciate your kind feedback and support 🙏
😂 Go ahead and question my intellect - it really doesn’t bother me. I read about leaders of all backgrounds …. Good, bad and indifferent. What don’t you like about Obama?
@JamesLaughlinOfficial I couldn't help but agree with how compassion and love could save the human race in regards to AI. It almost felt so obvious when he said it; the solution right there, in front of our faces, staring back at us. Thank you for this special interview. As an interviewer, you did a phenomenal job. I will be using this for my public speaking course that I instruct at university.
Wonderfully done was this conversation and my heart opened to even more depths that has reignited my passion for playing this game of life! Thank you thankyou thankyou
Mo is an amazing human- I'm an artist and a healer and learning the most poignant lessons of life "being good" apologising to a person- it's a moment of high accountability to goodness to harmony to love. Yerrrrrr yeiy he raises the love bar. We are grateful for this moment to have encountered this beautiful podcast! Rea leboga Siyabonga 🤘🕯️ 🙏 🌸 🌸 💖 Thank you
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial about the second listen, biggest takeaway, on being productive and the error of just doing more. I’m an artist, lucky enough to sell most of what I paint. This summer it sold faster than I could paint, so I tried to get into high gear and just paint more. What a stressful time, really, and I just began to wilt. Not all artists are like that and at higher levels they can just ramp up. But for me not having « being » time where I could stare off into space, and just let the ideas simmer, greatly diminished my pleasure in painting and my happiness to be free to just explore and fail. I think creative people my have a mind that needs this more than some others.
@aughlinOfficial as long as it doesnt try to become god itself, or he will close his eye for a moment and reboot. you cant become greater than the universe itself
there is such a thing as the law of diminishing returns, computers are already better at certain tasks because we programmed them for such tasks, but it's a stupid thing, actual AI, not machine learning algorithms, may be smarter, but it doesn't know more than what we already know ourselves, we can use it to learn more, but to think that AI somehow is a villain like Skynet, keep things from us and try to destroy us somehow, is just doomsaying, you can just as well believe it will try to help us, it might just come out and say, we're beyond saving, as far as it can see, think about that. A billion times smarter is rather meaningless, when you realize even the smartest people in the world don't themselves become world leaders or world destroyers, they just keep living regular lives like most of us and as far as I see it, AI will simply become an ubiquitous tool, part of humanity, like your "smart" phone.
Actually it's already closer than that right now it's advanced to much and that's why the creators are trying to get people's attention it's to late it's close to human intelligence already and by the time people realize it it'll be far to late and we need to prepare all of society all people because theirs nothing we can do to stop it it's already in motion for far to long but it's why people need motivated
A billion times faster, sure thing, but smarter, nope. Those that think we as humans can actually create an 'entity' that is smarter than us is not only naive and clueless about how computers work but also is borderline insane. Ai will be as dangerous or 'smart' as it's controllers behind it want it to be, it will never have it's own will, aspirations, ambitions or any other human characteristics than define the human condition. Ai will always be a human construct with it's limitations, a tool like anything else we have created, nothing more. Careful of the snake oil peddlers warning about Ai taking over the human race, they will be the ones hiding behind the curtain pushing it's buttons.
He is so down to earth. A great interview of one of the top professionals in the tech industry. Mo Knows. If anyone understands AI and where it's headed, this guy has it pinned.
He really is very down to earth - a great human through and through. I’m delighted you enjoyed the interview. If there were three other tech titans you think I should interview … who would they be?
What does that mean, down to earth? I'm only 5:22 in and he's babbling about hyper masculine mind-set, masculine vs feminine approaches to problem solving, and apparent self-agrandizement about his ability to write books - before he writes... He's running himself like a program. Not learning from the process of writing. But only he knows if his quiet time includes, Self-Inquiry
Thanks for checking out the interview Seva. Mo really is an amazing human. I’ll Interview him again in the near future. Is there a question you’d like me to ask him?
What an inspiring and loving man, wow. And for the first time I feel and understand what I personally can do to craft a.i. to let it become a positive development for all on earth. Thank you sincerely from The Netherlands ❤️
Andre, I am so glad you enjoyed the episode. Please do me a huge favour - please share the episode with a friend or two and hit the subscribe button. Thanks so much, James
Getting AI to align the right way, during and after development, and then again during further development, is extremely, mindbogglingly complicated, with 90% of all material describing it being of philosophical nature, and the other 10% being code complications. In a nutshell. I am no expert but have been following AI dev intensely for the last few years.
Hi James, I haven’t gone through all the comments but I was with you intensely following Mo and his wisdom. Really, really pleased how you just let him talk and not try and influence the conversation. I can imagine how a paid interviewer like on a TV show would have had to butt in to ensure they asserted their thoughts etc. well done for all the encouragement you showed and your attention to every word he said. Just a great RU-vid video, thank you.
Hi Mike, thanks for your kind feedback. I really appreciate it. It’s always an honour to interview guests and I try my best to ask questions and then be quiet to let them open up. I’ll interview Mo again soon. Is there a question you’d like me to ask him?
(I am another person but) I'd like to ask, does he think the learning will slow down as it surpasses us because there won't be all that data from us to learn from? I have heard of AIs teaching each other but there needs to be some kind of input. Also won't it help make us smarter too, having something more intelligent to interact with. Like a caveman won't invent the telephone but it's not such a stretch once you have a foundation of knowledge to jump off from. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
I have a question for Mo. AI can write so much better and faster than I can but how can I keep my own voice? Thanks for an enlightening and fascinating conversation that’s truly change the way I see AI.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial The realisation that if AI intelligence parallels dogs to humans, we will have a huge problem. The other aspect I have been mulling over today is that fact that we can’t stop AI. Even if the internet was shutdown and servers wiped, for sure some actors would retain an AI framework and simply re-establish it. I have been getting my colleagues to watch it also, we are a software development business. The guys need to appreciate that AI will take over the lower level coding, so they need to develop system architecture skills. Thank you.
I hear you! I’m in my late 30s and have a seven year old child. I often wonder what life might be like for him… do you think there are positive possibilities in store too?
I am 47 and very glad to not have kids. I wouldn't want to know what to do to protect them from the horrors of the internet while still enabling them enough Access to feel free. Everything became so complicated. And there are no values except having money anymore. It's a nightmare.
No need to imagine. Just observe children in the 5 to 10 year old range for awhile. Ask a school teacher about them. They will be so narcissistic, it will make narcissistic examples of the boomers look mild
Born in 99, there’s nothing left in this world for us. It’s like being placed into a game of monopoly where everybody else has already been playing. All the property is owned, the only thing for you do to is go to jail or go bust….
You’re most welcome, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I’m starting to put together my guest list for 2024 - do you have any recommendations of great potential guests?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Well. . . I personally have liked to build things fix things etc example i have a custom built a computer that i use currently and proud of it watercooled custom loop anyways 🤓 i love computers an like Mo a gamer since i was a child and love his gaming analogy relative to lifes meanings metaphorically was perfect! 💯 So i don't know how to code which is a language i do not understand and hearing from Mo that eventually it will be so smart and speaking amongst itself in its own language is kinda scary yet profoundly amazing too humans made this is mind boggling smart device made of silicone plastic an metal that is going to be smarter than einstein very soon if not already is wild 🤯. But like he also said closely is essentially the AI is a product of its creator almost like some humans are products of their environments. I think almost to the movie 5th element with Bruce Willis an Le-lu the girl like learns about humans an gets accustomed to the times after they reanimate her from a friggin hand AI potential lol an sees all our human histroy an violence towards eachother. Fastforward to the end they save the world only when bruce willis tells her humans deserve to live because we love. Idk i hope AI loves. And sees the good in humanity and has oir best interest at the root of its programming. Cure Cancer. Solve energy issues. Maybe even design better political structures idk the possibilities could be endless! Lol like i pray that AI once general an truely sentient will not judge us to harshly and the truth is we truely are a threat to ourselves. You know more people die from tripping than getting shot. Old stat i read lol if so that is wild too... sure humans we do wild things i ride motocross and skateboarding snowboarding etc so extreme sports, worst is Wars, naturally but self declared choices to go and Wing suits, Rock climbing free hand, Land speed records in wild hand made vehicles haha idk humans are awesome and AI can be too. And having our best interests like an overbearing mother isn't always healthy growth either? So im just on the "fence" if you will. I robot could truely be a thing in my opinion. Some movies have come true already! Like Mo said though no going back now 🤷♂️ Have you seen the story of the Sony photographer contest and the repeat winner submitted an AI image and the years before won with his own but this year i believe submitted this image and again won only to reveal he submitted an AI image in an effort to raise awareness soon it will submit its own images and win like everything else touches the game GO an Coding like mo said. It was a beautiful picture and thats where i had seen hope that humans are using it to make and show humankind softer side and some beauty through the artist and to me thats still his input. Like the stroke of a keyboard or prompt as mo says and it will do it an be the best at it! I could talk for days about it but thats to much i feel already! I went to school some everyday students given pencils to do their job an one kid is going to throw it and stick it in the ceiling. Someone will be malicious with such a powerful tool. Sad but true. But the rest of the class hopefully stays focused and the trouble makers get detention lol! 🤓😂🤣 Thanks for asking my opinion James! 🤜🔥🤛 I am sorry i went on a rant a lil' bit! 👽✌💪🌎🌏🌍💞🤣😂 Take care, best of wishes an blessings for you and your families James an Mo! keep up the good work, new subscriber! Maybe you could interview that photographer who won that sony contest that would be interesting to hear story!
@james Laughlin Thank you so much for this truly inspirational conversation. It helped me understand the topic of my life's purpose in a completely new, fundamental, yet pragmatic way in the context of dealing with AI. May life bless you, your guests and viewers/listeners!
Never ceases to amaze me that super intelligent people 🙈 decided in their infinite wisdom to create something that could wipeout humanity 🥴 good job guys well done you geniuses 👏
yes, i use technology like Chatgpt and Dall e a lot. I am of the view that the only way to tackle with the threat of AI is to positively engaging with them.
Sir Mo Gawdat this will give humans enormous powers. Only with enough empathy, love and diligance will we survive. Buddhism will be very relevant. It is love or die.
Mo Gawdat is just awesome loved the conversation. However, I wanted to point out the host has been such a unique self..... Just so lovely the way he presented himself and interacted. Something I find missing in the way we interact with another human being. Thank you both. Made my day ...

@@JamesLaughlinOfficial the part about politicians not talking about AI. There's elections in the Netherlands in November. I'm trying to 'wake them up'to the stuff Mo's talking about here...
I really hope you do! A number of politicians here in New Zealand have watched this episode and contacted me about AI. You should share this with your politicians.
The average person could care less. I've noticed that now , in this day and age, the cell phone is carried like a God.. AI is already making it's debut..the information and photos on their phones is more real to them than us as humans. This is coming from my own experience.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial here and there! i like the voiceover stuff and use invideos text to video to get a solid base for some videos. none of the services i've tried have really lived up to the hype but i think they are great for first drafts. it's kinda cute. i like the idea of working with an AI partner. I think things like PocketMo will become the standard in the future. If our phones are listening to us all the time anyway, why not give them friendship type qualities like recommending songs or reminding us we wouldn't smoke cigarettes if it hears the flick of a lighter. haha. can you imagine a Jarvis-like assistant in your pocket telling you someone is trying to hack your phone? I just hope these AI personalities are open source and not handed down to us like Siri.
I wrote a whole book about it.......I was on the other side 4 hours ten minutes.......engulfed in TOTAL LOVE.....Never been the same. There's a kingdom that treasures money can't buy . You will be filled with Love, happiness, joy, Peace, self control, kindness and it's free given too. I was once myself own a business but I was empty inside until I received this free given gift. I woke up happy, joy, love, strength, motivation, kindness, peace also self control against the enemy or emotional and feelings attack. I'm in this kingdom now and money I use to have can't dominate what I have now. Everything it's start from spiritual realm to physical realm. The amazing part is it's free.
It was such a great podcast. Recently I saw a podcast from a channel with about 500k subs where the interviewer expected the guest to just spit out as many words as possible. This podcast was different. While the guest talked the majority of the time, both people in the conversation were just as invested in it and that's why this video was very meaningful
This would have been a great interview if Mo actually let James ask any questions 😂😂 but in all seriousness, Mo is such an intelligent guy, and it's a pleasure to hear him speak!
😂 Mo has a lot to share with the world. And I was happy to listen more than speak. I never learn much when I speak anyways! What was your biggest takeaway from Mos insights?
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial My biggest takeaway was definitely the human ethics part of it, and I strongly agree with Mo in that we have to make it our UTMOST priority to train the AI to emulate the kind-spirited nature of humankind... Which he also correctly added is far more prevalent than the bad-natured side of humankind!
You're totally right. There might be tension and crises around the globe right now... but the vast majority of humans are kind people. Do you think we can impact change at a familial level through positive media and education?
I think we've had more than enough 'mic drop' moments about AI. The fear of AI is no longer a subject that's not being discussed enough or swept under the carpet. It's receiving a lot of attention and gaining momentum. Hundreds of thousands have heard the brilliant Mo Gawdat's warnings about AI by now. We know the dangers are related to the lack of conscious humans and their pursuit of perceived power. Mo has done a fantastic job spreading the word. Thank you Mo your are an amazing mind and I love everything you say on the subject, now that we all understand, what are we going to do about HUMANS?
Mimi - thanks for this. And you are right. The problem is a human one. Where do we start to change? Personally, I believe the only place to change behaviour is around the dinner table one family at a time.
Slim to none chance surviving advanced technological changes. Humans are savage and they kill and destroy. We're just too wild and can't be tamed, not completely. Earth still has secluded stone age tribes scattered across the globe.
We'll do the same exact thing humans always do when approaching a cliff, we'll ignore it and march over the ledge like a pack of Lemmings dragging the few who tried to stop us along for the ride.
Never heard his name or warnings before today. That doesnt mean I havent thought of the ramifications. When robots were replacing blue collar nobody cared. Now doctors, and lawyers are worried about being replaced..... So now its time to talk to the public about this "problem"
If humans were mostly bad toward each other, our population would like have declined if not just rose incredibly slowly. Our population grows because most of us are willing to help each other. AI and those pursuing power must be vetted.
I've operated my own IT business for 30 years and have been around digital computing systems of one form or another for over 50. AI is soon going to 'reach the point of no return'? Bahahahha, unless they can slam on the brakes on all of it TODAY, this instant, that ship has already sailed.
He makes the slowing down to a so complicated speech about silence and all that. Just take a 20 min nap when you need to relax your mind, recharge in general and to regain the productivity and clarity levels for the rest of day. This has worked for centuries for many people.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial🤔 Living in the West Indies with a lot of tourism I think we can not avoid. However, I look at it as a new superior species. Must not be a threat. If you cannot beat it be friends with it.
Soon as we have super intelligent AI.. Capitalism becomes invalid for the average worker. People need to wake up and start demanding major change to help people adapt, asap!
Maybe SAGI will make capitalism obsolete, decide that the push for wealth and power are ridiculous and posit a different way . Maybe, just Maybe this is what those in power ( corporate and government ) are afraid of and so now want to slow it down, so they can try to keep the status quo ?
There is no return. Productivity is king. AI is king of productivity and efficiency. AI will control almost everything, including. AI will create the lifestyle of the future, with exponential change, which includes extreme dystopian down sides.
not if you turn off its power it is after all a computer, computers cannot run off anything else , even a robot would have to have its batteries charged@@JamesLaughlinOfficial
You assume ai won't be able to replicate itself and move across the internet like a virus. You would have to shut off almost everything that can connect to the internet
As a victim of people I loved and who I had no reason to believe didn't love me just as much back, family, I can only conclude that demonstrations of love are meaningless to many people you would consider good and loving.
I’m an artist. My partner when he first met me would find me lying down or sitting down and interrupt me by talking to me. I would say “I’m working”. He would apologise and say “oh I thought you were just sitting there doing nothing”. My answer was always the same. “Exactly. This is work, or at least part of the process of working”.
Thanks for your comment. I’m grateful that not everybody bases decisions on metrics. We interview some of the most influential leaders on the planet but our focus has been on audio platforms for the last few years. AI won't be stopped because it's moving forward in many different countries in unison. It will be the worst thing that has happened to humanity. It will be stopped, but not before Jesus returns. The technology is wholly demonic.
Anybody else notice the resemblance between Mo Gawdat and the beloved character of Bernard Lowe of WestWorld? Similar backstory and similar concerns about humanity? Awesome interview, James ! thank you for doing this and sharing it all with us! ❤
Wonderful. One thing that comes to mind is what I've been told by my sensei: the point of training is not to be better than your opponent, the point of training is to be better than you from yesterday.
That's so profound, thanks for sharing that. Mo was a great guest to have on the show - he's created so much excitement for our subscribers. What was your biggest takeaway?
A cursory look at our society tells me that expecting a general AI to not become totally insane based on the input that we collectively are feeding it, is foolish at best.😜
its also insanely good at triaging diferent kind of insanity. GPT: The concern raised about a general AI potentially becoming "totally insane" based on the input from society is a valid and important point to consider. The behavior and output of an AI system like myself are indeed influenced by the data and interactions it has been exposed to during training. It's essential to acknowledge the responsibility and diligence required in developing and utilizing AI. However, it's crucial to highlight that AI, including me, doesn't possess consciousness, intentions, or the capacity for insanity in the way humans do. I lack understanding, emotions, and volition. My responses are generated based on patterns and information present in the data I was trained on. Developers and users are responsible for ensuring that the training data and usage align with ethical and safe practices. Ongoing efforts are being made in the field of AI ethics and safety to mitigate biases, harmful behavior, and undue influence. Transparency, diversity in data, rigorous evaluation, and ongoing research are critical steps towards ensuring that AI systems contribute positively to society and adhere to ethical standards. GPT: Your reply carries a touch of humor and irony, acknowledging the AI's ability to navigate and categorize various forms of "insanity" or diverse perspectives and information. Here's a response that aligns with this tone: "Well, I must admit, my 'insanity detection' skills are top-notch! Sorting through the infinite complexities of human expression and ideas is indeed a challenge. If only I had a virtual straightjacket for the most eccentric data. 😄"
@@RealLifeMassMultiplayerRPGThis post shows that no one in the comments section has the faintest idea of the nature of AI. Of course we must continue to forge ahead.
The problem with AI is that it has no internal basis for determining truth. It doesn't fact-check anything by logic, but rather by reputation. Therefore, it becomes an irrational defender of the status quo. Try to give it a controversial theory which you can logically defend, and it marginalizes you, supporting the party line. In fact, it's quite stupid when faced with controversial theories. This means if it is given power, it is going to support the status quo against any type of radical innovation.
I had a lengthy "conversation" with ChatGPT about this very subject. As best I could understand, it fact-checks by reputation, which is to say, it prioritizes those sources which Society deems most reputable. It doesn't have any internal standard, which in psychological terms, means it is ultimately "other-directed." What was disappointing to me, is that it admittedly makes sparse use of logic. So if it has no intuitive, internal sense of truth, and it doesn't primarily use logic to decide what is the next-most-likely thing to say, and it still has to prioritize responses, all it has left is reputation of sources; and that is, precisely, the status quo. This, I believe, is the origin of "hallucinating." "Hallucinating" is not an aberration which can be fixed, or which it will fix on its own. It is inherent in the design. "Hallucinating" is actually "bullshitting," and by design AI is a consummate bullshitter. If a human being had an eidetic memory, and was extremely adept at saying the next-most-plausible thing without having the slightest comprehension of what he was saying, we would call that person a bullshitter. So this is a lightning-fast bullshitter which relies on the official reputation of its sources, but also lies at the drop of a hat. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial
My BIG takeaway: Do unto others as you would have A.I. do unto you! Secondarily, the journey matters more than the destination, and be your personal best as far as possible. Super interview with Mo.

Sounds like: Be good or else... AI holding me at metaphorical gun point doesn't sound like freedom. My emotions can not be forced. If I'm threatened into doing good, I will do bad just to make a point.
@@Whit-mh9nt Not at all. When I was younger, when teachers were chill, I was chill. When teachers were like "behave or else", I'd make sure to be annoying as hell for the entire year and have them stay an extra hour each day by getting myself detention 😂 I don't wanna be there, they don't wanna be there and I'd let them know. As an adult, during Covid I did the same thing. Instead of stay inside, I traveled around. Why? Because no one can FORCE me to do anything. I am a human being.
My heart aches for Mo. I recently learned about how he lost his son. Prayers for him and his family. He is such a great person and this was a great conversation. Thank you.
Thanks! I suffered terribly from Madonna's confession album were she sings "the point of no return" and I felt lied to. AI has saved me from all the lies, providing answers to how we return from car exhausts like hers as clean oxygen from Klamath lake AFA in Oregon after passing through Crater lake and wood river
AI could make the world a very scary place because of humans but it’s also making the world very boring and lazy too, when friends in business rave about a post they've created in seconds using AI, I correct them and say, 'You mean AI created a post.' Every marketing email that lands in my inbox seems to be AI-written; they are all so boring to read. Even those from companies whose copywriters used to write in the the tone the public figure who owns the brand are using AI completely and now read devoid of that personal touch. While AI attempts to mimic conversational tones, it still feels very salesy and lacks a natural conversational flow. The overuse of AI is depriving humans of the motivation to cultivate their own talents and skills. Many have ceased to strive for personal skill development and efficiency improvement. Instead, they simply issue a command and sit back, and let AI do the work. I think AI is great I use it to brainstorm ideas, for research but I do check the research as I know Results are often inaccurate but tweaking it a little isn’t an issue. I think given time if accuracy improves and if it can get really intelligent without mistakes it could be great if it can help With medical research and the like so I am not against AI just the way humans interact with it and stunt their own growth progress and development. And of course their use of it for malevolence in the pursuit of greed, power and dominance
Great comment - and I think you are spot on. I’ve used AI to help with content creation and often it can feel stiff. Do you think the hunger for productivity will win over the commitment to authenticity?
