I watched an interview with Lou Gramm where he talked about recording this song, how they left the recording studio to watch Jr. play nearby and asked if he'd record a solo for this song, and Lou did say that Jr. did record several sax lines that they edited together. Interestingly he also said that sometime later they played this song in concert and brought Jr. Walker up to play the sax solo and apparently he had heard the recording by then, and played it exactly how it was edited together on the record.
Brilliant. I never really showed my fingers before, because there's not that much to see, but I guess that's the whole point - people need to se that you shouldn't be moving your fingers much! lol J:-)
Your work is unpayable. And all this artists will haunt you for dismanteling their sax secrets......😅 This solo is just brillant .Definitly masterclas.Thank you so much.🙏
Most excellent! I am going to learn to do that tongue roll on an EWI... After all the years of whistling, I picked the right time to learn saxophony. Thanks!
I’m actually looking for a tenor at the moment, might take a while before I can hit that High G on it once I do lol. I am managing to get D4 on my alto. Yes the neighbours love me 😂
_Blessings.....As an ex symphony clarinetist, I remember "roll" as "flutter tongue." I might be wrong, but, as an edit, digital equipment needed to do so back then did not exist! Loved this vid. Foreigner one of my favorite bands, and Jr. Walker when I did not know that the world was not a nice place!_ 😁
THIS. IS. AWESOME!.. I've been wanting to play this solo for years but I always just go.. nope. My altissimo is good too, I end up just voicing the high notes as close as I can. But you got it near perfect. Love the slow breakdown AND you put the notes on the screen for everyone to try! For alto AND tenor. Genius. Bravo maestro. Great video!
@@GetYourSaxTogether Yeah, anytime, I can rewatch this, and all of your great viddies! p.s.- Dear Jamie's embouchure, I hope you feel better, and will be walking around again soon! 😊
Awesome!!! Thank you sooooo much! I always wondered what in the world was going on with this lead. I feel better now that you mentioned a few of the high notes might have been edited in!!!! Excellent playing!!!!
@@GetYourSaxTogether The original vocalist Lou Gramm said that mut lange dubbed the original solo from different takes. He said something about taking 3bars from here and 2 from another and so on. What floored them was Junior, when he play with them at the forum. Blew the solo note for note. I guess they were really surprised of his mastery of his instrument.
Thanks Jamie for another amazing sax lesson! I can hardly reach confidently to third octave F#, so I guess I'll leave to leave this solo for future study sessions. But, it's always important to set challenging goals in order to keep up making progress, and certainly this will be on the list. Awesome, as always!
@@GetYourSaxTogether 🤣I played it in one band, had to explain that every reed won't hit those notes and are 7$ a pop definitely feels good to nail it & if not you don't feel to bad about it
@@GetYourSaxTogether I really enjoy the way you guys break down and teach I find that the older I get I just can't force myself to break stuff down like I did when I was young and a sponge keep doing what you do
Great stuff again Jamie😀 A bit too much for me but still amazing. Something to aspire to. Best sax channel on RU-vid by a country mile. Yes it's interesting to hear someone recommending a £500 mouthpiece (which most of us can't afford and to be honest probably couldn't play), but here you get something to do and enjoy. Thanks again.
Fabulous Jamie. It's clear where Jr comes in and it's after the staccato choppy riff which is so not Jr. Curiously his playing on the Foreigner track is much better than on his cover on one of his later albums. Still would love you to do 'Sweet Soul'
Yeh, I agree about where Jr. comes in. Check out the new link in the description to the story of his solo on Urgent. Sweet Soul is awesome - I might do it some day! J:-)
@@GetYourSaxTogether Transistioning from a flat lower lip to goldfish face just last week made a HUGE difference in my ability to make progress on so many levels! Thank you, Jamie!!!
Hello, your videos are the best! Thank you for so much information and style when playing tenor saxophone! One question, maybe you've already been asked, what tenor sax mouthpiece do you use? I haven't seen that you have described the nozzle model, thank you!
Am new to your channel Jamie and I have to say it's absolutely brilliant. Really enjoying working on several of the more managable solos ( not this one for the moment!). Have always been somewhat infactuated with the sax solo at the end of Hazel O'Connor's WILL YOU. Is this one you've covered in the past, or might consider covering in the future?
Hi Tim. Thanks for your support, that's awesome and much appreciated. I'm gonna do Will You at some point. I have to don't I?! Thing is, it's massive, so I might to either do a series or a mini course or something! Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J😊
Hi Mr. Anderson, I have hard time motivating myself, learning notes and to keep learning to play the saxophone. Can you give me hints and advice and things like that, please? Greeting, Frank
Hi Jamie Your Tenor Sax looks a different colour in this video. Is it your 1974 MK6 or a different sax. Just wondered if you practice with your main horn or use a less valuable one. Or do you just use the same horn regardless of situation.
According to Mick Jones (FOREIGNER band leader) Junior Walker did the solo in three parts. Then during the tours for live performance he had to learn the whole solo to play live in from of the audience. REALLY CHALLENGING EVEN FOR THE GREAT JUNIOR WALKER (Aretha Franklin' sax man!)
Well - that's a rather long story, but it's mostly practicing overtones, and learning how to set your embouchure. And I'm so glad you play Cagney and Lacey!!! Yes! Hope that helps and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. J😊
Found a good double F# and double G# fingering for this/generally: (1 2 3 + side C) for the double G# (same as reg altissimo G#), and then can slide right into the double F# by lifting the 2 pearl (1 3 + side C). I like (1 3 4) or "split F" a bit better for initially getting out the double F# but it can play a little sharp. "Split F" is also a good double G fingering. Can slide from one to the other.
Thanks for the tip. I've worked my way up chromatically to the double F# so far, but anything above that is eluding me. I''ll give your fingerings a try.
Nos darías un gran aporte de tus conocimientos que la tocaras completa bueno es pedir mucho ya que la canción es magnífica claro a tu versión gracias disculpa no me canso de escuchar el solo
Wonderful, but this is too much for me, Jamie already asked you for a very high video for alto saxophone (how to gradually get to very high notes), don't forget it when you can. Thank you
I’m trying to tackle this on alto. I can’t even get to the altissimo before struggling. I understand the rhythm but my brain won’t cooperate with my fingers! 😅
Yes! Great suggestion. Fear not, it's on "the list" to be done at some point. Thing about this channel is - everything will get done at some point in the next 10 years, you just might have to be patient! lol J:-)
This is a real challenge but great fun, many thanks Jamie! Have you considered doing 'Look at little sister' by Stevie Ray Vaughan, with Joe Sublett on sax? He plays a very tasty solo! Cheers
In fact, yes, according to Lou Gramm himself, the solo was recorded as different phases separated and not in one take from start to finish. Jr Walker made a longer solo and the band did "cut" the best parts and assembled them together. But Gramm added that Walker once played the solo note-for-note during some concerts. But this was not the case during the recording sessions. I was a bit disappointed by that, to be honest...
Thanks for that super knowledgeable comment. I've got a recording of that one time he played it with them live somewhere. It's longer than the recorded version, so he plays the full recorded solo then jams out a bit more which is cool. As I think I mention of the video, it seems impossible for him to make one of the leaps that he makes in one take!
I was told that Junior Walker was so drunk when he did the session for Urgent. They just let him play along and recorded him. Then they cut & spliced bits together to create the solo we know from the recording.
Man I just had goosebumps from hearing the song and I really want to play this Sax Solo like you, but I know that I am far away from ist as I don't have a Sax and skills... :-D
Hi Jamie, fantastic stuff as usual (love your tone). I can get a reasonable way into the altissimo on both tenor and alto, but these alti-altissimo F# and G# on tenor are insane. One of my favourite sax solos is Marc Russo's alto solo on the live version of "Trouble in Paradise" by Huey Lewis - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kk9TFRmWCH0.html at the 2:28 mark and again near the end of the song at 3:36. Here's a challenge for you, Jamie! And what a great band Huey L and the News were! Cheers.
One afternoon in August 1983 I got a phone call. This guy says " I'm Jr. Walker's bass player and Jr. needs a new bass player. Only thing is you have to leave this afternoon ". Well I had already seen Jr. Walker play and his band sucked and they were miserable so I turned down the gig. Besides I was a great sax player, keyboardist and Guitarist and I didn't want to hear that same honking pentatonic lick every night. I finally met him in person in '92 as we were staying in the same hotel in Albuquerque. He was kind of an asshole. I grew up in the mid 60's listening to his Shotgun album so I shouldn't dis him. He brought a lot of people a lot of joy and he suffered for it. Traveling around in an old broke down Greyhound bus playing for chump change on the chitlin circuit. RIP.
Hello Jamie i'm so glad to find you and follow you for learn how to play my tenor sax. I would like to ask you if u can play this song in the next link for us ? moonrunner83 megan mcduffee bring dreams
