The amazing thing about Ursula Andress in Dr No is that I never doubt for one minute that she might have put a black widow under the mosquito net of a man who abused her. She delivers the line (and I know she's dubbed) with such matter-of-factness. They could have found many a pretty girl to play Honey Rider but they went for the one you could believe had grown up in the Caribbean, taking care of herself and collecting seashells to sell by the sea shore.
The way the word, 'Bond Girl' gets used, you'd think that the actresses involved were never anything more than starlets but Andress established a kind of rule that the main girl would be a force of nature and not just eye candy. It's always interesting to me that women in films are now given superpowers to conquer the world with a flick of their little finger but rarely exude the very real power that women in films used to have.
Andress, born in Switzerland and wearing a lot of quick tan to play the role of Honey, was the first to be able to capitalise on her fame as a Bond Girl in film after film. She always seemed best, to me, playing someone with something of a dark side. In Elio Petri's 'The 10th Victim' she was able to play a very successful killer and in 'Casino Royale' she was Vesper Lynd who makes mincemeat out of Peter Sellers. She was for a good number of years box-office gold. In 'What's New Pussycat', her cameo-like role as a parachutist who lands in Peter O'Toole's car added considerably to the starry comedy.
I first saw Andress in 'Dr No' when I was 8 or 9 and it left me more than a little haunted. The colour of her hair. The changeability of her demeanour from feminine to aggressive. From victim to fighter. Watching her was like taking in the first sun that breaks Winter's back. I can only imagine how this film must have seemed to audiences in 1962
