Episode #148: Filmed at her Brooklyn studio, artist Ursula von Rydingsvard recounts her family's journey from German refugee camps during WWII to their difficult early years in Connecticut. Accompanied by images from her personal archive, von Rydingsvard describes how her family's struggles still influence her studio practice today.
Ursula von Rydingsvard builds towering cedar structures, creating an intricate network of individual beams and sensuous, puzzle-like surfaces. While abstract at its core, von Rydingsvard's work takes visual cues from the landscape, the human body, and utilitarian objects--such as the artists collection of household vessels--and demonstrates an interest in the point where the man-made meets nature.

In 1968 & 1969, Ursula was my art teacher in Miami Springs Florida. Ursula spoke gently, just as she does now and was tremendously encouraging. After 1969, I lost track of her, however, knew she was in New York & cncentrating on her craft. Watching this video reminds me of the long talks we had and how wonderful she was as a teacher. I knew she was going to be somebody. I wish her only good things. Tim Savage

I'm so glad to see an artist whose work I love recognizing that hard work isn't the key to success in America. It is at best the key to getting by, which is why we are fed the line about hard work leading to success by those who have never had to work hard or who were born to success through being born to wealth and power. Hard work is important in many ways, but it is not what determines success.

I love how she speaks, her words penetrate ... I want to study all her art, I didn't know of her before now.
