Years ago they had this free on-damned and I watched it even though I never heard of it before. It was one of those few movies that even though I have sadly have only been able to see it once it is forever stuck in my mind. Hell I can remember seating in my grandma's living room completely confused at what the hell was going on and yet the same time completely hooked onto it.

I remember seeing this in 1998 over the summer. We had just left Vegas and my brother and I weren't feeling good, so we stopped over in St George, Utah. Our folks went out for dinner and we saw this on Sci-fi with Apollo Smile hosting. It fascinated us. A year later I met a friend in High School that had all the episodes and movies and I was hooked. This movie though stands out as a masterpiece above all

@@hanfett I randomly found this movie on a December day back in 2019 on Amazon. I had virtually no knowledge on the series and watched it anyway, and loved it. I've watched it 2 more times since then, once in sub (originally watched it in dub) and then in Spanish dub. It does help having watched the series but honestly it had a unique beauty to it watching it for the first time without knowing the show.

OMG remember when SyFy was still the Sci-Fi Channel and they used to have those 'anime film festivals'? The 4th Annual Festival of Anime was my intro: Tenchi Muyo In Love, Gall Force: The Eternal Story, E.Y.E.S. of Mars and Venus Wars. Ahhh, memories.

I went from planning to watch this movie in English when I was 15 and got in to a good college, to finally watching it this year when I was at my lowest mentally. I'm going to look fondly back at that memory 😌

This is a wonderful movie and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of Oshii's works or want a comedy with a unique premise. Oshii really grows into his own style in this film. Many scenes are slow and meditative and end in a mysterious ambiguity that is appropriately dreamlike, setting a mood to be introspective to the themes and problems faced by the characters. However, that isn't to say it ever forgets to be a comedy. I found myself laughing out loud almost as much as I was just taking in the scenes. Worst thing I can say about the film is that it isn't entirely standalone. It definitely helps to get some context from watching a few episodes first, which is fine because the TV series is delightful and Oshii was also involved with the first half of the series. Check it out!

@@therealsamasima It definitely helps for context. There isn't any exposition for why Lum can fly or why Mendou can just casually get a tank, so you'll feel a little lost. Once Mendou is introduced in episode 14, you'll know all the major characters and understand the show's formula pretty well.

You only need to watch two of the Urusei Yatsura movies, the first one and this one. The first one was all Rumiko Takahashi's vision, it came out the way she envisioned it to be. The second one is the director Maormu Oshii's vision. Takahashi did not like it, but the creative tension produced this incredible movie.

In this movie, Ataru had the chance of having an harem for himself and get rid of Lum, but in the end he rejected the girls so he could go back with the oni. Ironic xd

As someone who's been watching anime since the DiC/Cloverway days and the early iteration of Toonami, I've never actually seen Urusei Yatsura. I recall watching the first episode a couple years back on a whim, but that's about it. Granted I do have a backlog of anime handwritten on four back-to-back sheets somewhere (and, like all the anime I watch, whatever I pick is based on whatever mood I'm in), but I've been listening to all those future funk videos for the past couple months and I'm usually privy to seeing Lum in those gifs. That, and whenever I've read of people talking about Beautiful Dreamer, it's usually in a positive light. This is one of those instances in which I'll watch it just to see what it's like beyond that first episode. Come to it again with an open mind that's a couple years older. OT, though, I'm really digging the quality. Makes me wish we'd get a resurgence in cel animation, as unlikely as it is nowadays with mostly everything done in CGI.

It is fine to yearn for the beautiful look of old animes, the aspect that the late 90´s anime had is mesmerizing to me, but the sad reality is that it is a costly art, the good thing is that with today's access to information is probable that a lifetime is not enough to watch all that the gems of the past so there plenty of good things to choose from to complement the good animes that are still made today even if they do not have that lovely old school look.

This is up there with my favorite films of all time. I first saw this when I was about ten and it blew my goddamn mind. I went into this with no context about who these characters were and i think it enhances the experience. I've still never seen any other UY stuff.

Deirdre ღ if only this anime style never died out. Cel animation had its flaws but in the end it truly gave anime life. Now there are very few anime’s left that can capture the majesty of cel animation. The only good anime I’ve seen in mainstream media lately is castlevania. The script could use work but the animation is no joke.
