I’ve seen the video. The Airman had the gun pointed down by his leg when he opened the door. He was NOT aiming it at the officer, but the officer immediately started shooting as if the gun was aimed at him. He was in his own home. He had a right to protect himself.

It wouldn't matter if Fortson had the gun pointed down. In the mind of the officer Fortson was the suspect in a DV assault. Therefore when the officer saw the gun he shot. Officer have to make split second decisions so although the shooting was tragic it was reasonable.

Only thing it will come with is an added risk and it is quite a high risk at that IMO. The officer didn’t even hear a disturbance when he walked up to the door. It’s not against the law to display a weapon in your own home, especially since the weapon was pointing down and the other hand was up in the air. Armon please stfu! The officer may end up with a slap on the wrist for breaking policy, although that policy has cost somewhere their life or he may not even end up with a slap on the wrist. They are going to need to find a way to explain why the DA will not be charging the officer so hold on tight to your drinks folks. Officers have way more latitude than we know.

The officer announced himself twice. The reason the officer didn't stand in front of the door is because suspects can shoot police through the door. This is called the fatal funnel. This is why the officer was standing to the side of the door while announcing himself.

It is always sad to hear that a young person was killed for no reason. I know he had the gun, but according to the news it was to his side. The officer had plenty of time to tell him to drop the gun before he discharged his weapon. Officer don't have to wait for a gun to be pointed at them before shooting. Once they see a threat they will neutralize it. After Fortson was shot, the officer gave Fortson the command to drop the weapon not knowing the weapon was dislodged from Fortson's person while being shot.

The cowardly sheriff and his cowardly deputy both lied. The video proves that. The deputy was ready to shoot because he has "qualified immunity." The young airman had to think and analyze. He lost the gunfight because he solved the puzzle.

No he lost the gun fight because he was foolish. Don't answer the door to an officer with a gun in hand. At the time of the shooting, Fortson was the suspect in the deputy's mind.

I don't think the police announced themselves and, if they did, I don't think this Airman HEARD them. It is hard to hear through a door especially if you got other background noise. The Airman probably just heard loud banging and grabbed his gun to check the door. My own mom used to do this when we were kids. I think the Airman didn't hear the cops announce themselves (if they actually did) and approached the door the way most people would. The police failed.
