US and Philippines forces, backed by an Australian air force surveillance aircraft, sank a mock enemy ship as part of large-scale war drills in and near the disputed South China Sea that have antagonized Beijing.

china been trying make this issue big, at least Philippines didn't sink it with men onboard.. Unlike them trying to sink manned boat without hesitations..

FYI The Excersise mock drill of a ship were conducted within 12 nautical mile w/in Philippine territory. Not Outside or South China Sea

It was not a mock ship.. It was Chinese Made Ship being sunk for practice purposes...

Added info, the US and Philippines had sank several old Philippine Navy ships everytime they have joint Naval drills. Last time was even an old US made Phil. Navy ship. What is concerning this time for China was the current ship that was sank was a made in China tanker ship that was given to the Philippine Navy in 2007. They used it for the current drills because it is no longer deem useable due to so many expensive problems but China sees it as a symbolism that the joint drills is attacking a Chinese ship.

They only used smaller missiles. They only have one target so they didn't need to sink it to quickly so they can test other missiles on the ship. They want to see how efficient Philippines fighter jets can lock on targets and how they can work interoperability.

they deliberately avoid destroying it in one attack. They want it to stay afloat for a long time so all of their weapons and missile could had a chance to be fired and practiced in just one drill. They only had 1 mock ship at their disposal.
