When I was in the Army in the 80's I travelled through these 2 towns Gemunden and Lohr quite often. Also the prison camp town Hammelburg a little further on. Did not recognise much from the film.The large brige with the church on the end with the infantry crossing I remember, but don't remember the town. Great film, Thanks

The Werhmacht surrendering to the Americans was a blessing for them. It was rough, but not like how the Soviets treated German POWs. The POWs lived to tell about it after the war.

@@clovergrass9439 Well war is hell especially when you start one and lose. There were many atrocities committed on both sides of the war. Many forget the Mameldy massacre committed by the SS during the Battle of the Bulge. Also when the Allies liberated the concentration camps many allied soldiers had an immense anger towards the Werhmacht more so with the SS. It was sad the Germans that surrendered were treated that way, but it was payback for Germany's atrocities. Out of the Werhmacht personnel that surrendered many survived being captured by the U.K and U.S, then being imprisoned by the Russians. Also most of the Germans that surrendered on the Western front lived and thrived on the Marshall plan and Germany's resourcefulness. The ones that surrendered on the Eastern front many didnt survive and make it back to Germany.

Assistance in the amount of $13 billion for reconstruction was given to: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK and WEST GERMANY between 1948 and 1952.

I was nine years old in April 1945 when the Americans came to our village in the Harz Mountains. The SS had already fled, so not a single shot was fired when they took our village. The US soldiers were restrained but not aggressive, although they had suffered great losses since the Normandy landings. In the Huertgen Forest they lost about 33,000 men. All men who had not caused the war. Our freedom of speech in Germany today often includes an anti-American attitude. To these people I say: if the Allies had not defeated us and hounded Hitler and his Nazi generals to the last day, we would not have a democracy or freedom of speech today. Examples: Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. I am very grateful to the Americans, was ashamed to be German for many years after the end of the war. Later I lived in Frankfurt and was proud to have many American friends among the US military. Danny Hildebrand

This film is an incredible historical treasure. It matches exactly the descriptions of my favorite teacher in the fifth grade in the 1950's, a WWII army veteran who saw combat in France and Germany. There are no embellishments. Just the simple unvarnished painful truth of war and it's consequences. Thanks for sharing this! Any veteran watching this film please take note and vote blue this November if you want to avoid a repeat of these events. We don't need another lunatic leading us down this path again.

@godfreyzilla8608 I can only agree with you. I am an 88 year old German and lived through the whole war as a child in Germany fearfully. At the end of the fifties I worked as a driver for the US Army in Frankfurt and had many American friends. In later years I traveled a lot in the USA and learned to appreciate the country and its people. I am still very grateful to the Allies, especially the Americans, that they did not give our Nazis a chance to negotiate shortly before the end of the war and instead forced unconditional capitalization, which ultimately ensured democratic conditions in our country, from which we still benefit today. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten this or don't even know it. You are right: we don't need any Trumps, Putins, Erdogans, Khameneis, Xis or Kim Jong-uns on this planet. There are other concerns that need to be addressed.

@godfreyzilla8608 3 месяца назад
@@dannyhildebrand2505 : Thank you for your kind comments. I know that the punishment placed on the German people after WWI by the Allies created the situation that gave birth to the Nazi party. Blind revenge is never a smart nor a good thing to do. As a result many Germans were convinced that the party would save them from the effects of that extreme punishment. I believe many German civilians went along willingly with the Nazi party as a result but many innocent civilians did not and suffered for that. In many ways the German people themselves were victims of the Nazi extremists both directly and indirectly by extending a lost war causing tremendous suffering for all sides. This in no way excuses the concentration camps but it does matter. I am a retired architect. My first mentor was born in Kempten in 1935 and lived there during the war and after until 1951 when he emigrated to the USA. I worked with him for four years before returning to the university. He taught me so much that I was able to test out of two years worth of studies in engineering and architecture. Before that I had a good schoolmate friend who was born in Hamburg in 1948. When I met him about 1955 he was wearing lederhosen. He had a beautiful sister but that is another story. Both my mentor and my schoolmate were named Wolfgang. Both have since passed. I am sorry to hear that the young German people do not know or understand the history of the last century but times have changed and the situation in Germany is very different now as I understand it. Hopefully they will find a way to peacefully resolve the differences that occur in Germany today. If not God help us all - again. God Bless

You're not saying anything new. The Nazis still wanted to conclude a peace treaty with the Allies in April 1945, but thank God it turned out that Hitler and his gang were fought unconditionally to the last man, so that a new beginning was only possible here in Germany. Nevertheless, many Nazis escaped after the war but are now dead. Today, like many other countries, we unfortunately have to record a new emergence of these fools. By the way: Europe can only hope that the mentally ill Donald Trump does not take the helm again.
