Indian spice brands MDH and Everest Masala are under the scanner in Hong Kong and Singapore because their products contain a chemical which can cause cancer. New reports say US customs has been rejecting MDH products for contamination as well. Faye explains the controversy.

It’s not politics. It’s disregard for rules, safety and hygiene. It’s ingrained in our culture. In all of us. When we don’t stop at a red signal. When we pay a bribe for not wearing the seat belt. When we don’t wear a seatbelt. When we get up from the seat as soon as the plane touches the ground. It’s not the govt. we are the govt in a democracy. It’s what we value as a society.

Being self sufficient is the real life saver here. You can not depend on the companies to do what’s right. And it’s illegal, only if you get caught! And how often are they caught? And if they are caught, How often are they prosecuted and punished for the harms they’ve caused?

MDH is banned in all south Asian countries and East Asian countries..( China, Vietnam, Laos, S.Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore have all banned these products)

@@beezlebub9 Here we go Indians hear some stories first second and third hand and think their government takes things seriously. Thank you for the correction. MDH is also sold in shops in the UK, but I think import controls are stricter in the EU and now ex EU (UK).

Don't Indian Lives Matter? Does the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, FSSAI, have the wherewithal to test the millions of Food products we have on our supermarket shelves? Aren't "after expiry date" Food and medications still sold in the market? This should be a wake-up call for putting into place world class testing protocols.

Literally everything nowadays is FSSAI approved , it lost its credibility long back ... In india If you have contacts & can slide money under the table everything becomes legal .... Driving licences is the best example

Sadly Indian lives do not matter to Governments. If they did there would not be a deal with Israel to send Indian citizens to a war zone to compensate for the cheap Palestinian labour becoz of the War. How many farmers were killed by politicians in their SUVs with impunity. Uncontrolled population growth has never been addressed resulting in slave labour.

Not ethyl oxide but ethylene oxide (has a double bond in the structure unlike the lack of valence electrons in Ethyl oxide). Once consumed, the double bond in Ethylene oxide can be easily broken and generate free radicals that can lead to oxidative stress in the body and increase the risk of hypermutation in cells and carcinogenesis.

Coming from NE this packet spices use to always make me sick whenever am outside and have meals out. I get it now. I try to avoid these spices and now will refrain from using or buying completely.

Why FDA in India don't check this product.is this safe or not.some fish also contains formalin chemical but no body care to check.

Yes got some fish from Bangladesh which tasted like mud so I threw it out. Do not buy Chinese food or fish too in the UK. Always dodgy. Japanese is better expensive but worth it.

Even with checks they bribe officials. Alphonso mangoes one year were banned by the EU. After much intervention EU agreed to take the harvest. Next year the same happened so after a second shipment and warning it was still ignored. Third year no Alphonso mangoes on any shelves in the UK. This was my experience before Brexit. Bribe culture in in our DNA. You can take an Indian to the moon but can't take the Indian out of them.

@@sonia-bb3os In masala factories they don't wash the spices in water. They directly turn it into powder. Whereas at home I wash cloves, pepper in water then drop it in vegetable pot as it boils.

Am an Indian living in the UK and used to buy this MDH packets. Indian quality has never been a priority no matter what laws are in place Implementation is ignored. 3 Trillion economy can only be achieved through export and who would want to buy unsafe food or any products in the West. Even today my relatives always prefer to buy the same products outside India even though they are cheaper in India. Subservient quality.

like most government organizations - just continue a parasitic existence without any sense of responsibility. I doubt if the people in these institutions even have the skills to find out what is adulterated and what is not. They are just holding posts because of degrees obtained years ago - internal knowledge is close to zero.

They wouldn't but will be a good thing as the quality of all products will be far higher than India. Was looking at the toilets and housing in the villages provided by the Modi/BJP. OMG the brickwork and mortar construction are like child's play.

It may just not be feasible for FSSAI to quality control food products for the worlds most populated country. And, they have been caught before but the practices still continue. But I am not saying that we need to silently suffer. There has to be another solution or check in addition to FSSAI. How about severe punishments, instituted by lawmakers and prosecutors, if caught? The fear of punishment (like being driven out of business) should be high enough to be a deterrent...

Neither does us fda check each and everything. You don’t need to. You just take random samples regularly. But in India our organizations are so poorly funded. Instead we’re building big statues and renovating parliament

The world most populated country have been caught many times by Foreign countries and products have been banned.. Corruption has been responsible for all the bad quality of Indian brands. Take that stupid Ramdev and his bhakts who take part in mass yoga exercises. The UP Govt. was found gulity by the Supreme Court not even the High Court for selling medicines without proper licences and research.
