US ELECTION: TV duel! "Donald Trump didn't expect this!" Kamala Harris' tactics are working
Almost two months before the US presidential election, the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the Republican Donald Trump have engaged in a heated TV duel. During the exchange on Tuesday in Philadelphia, the Vice President managed to force Trump onto the defensive several times. The former President reacted visibly angrily at times and repeatedly accused his opponent of destroying the USA, particularly through misguided economic and immigration policies. Harris countered that Trump put himself above the people, while she would be a president for all Americans with a clear plan to support the middle class, families and small businesses.
The 59-year-old appeared much more quick-witted and prepared than President Joe Biden, who ultimately gave up his candidacy in favor of his deputy after a disastrous television debate against Trump in June. The former prosecutor sharply attacked Trump on a whole range of issues, such as his numerous criminal proceedings or his behavior during the storming of the Capitol by angry Trump supporters in January 2021. She lured the 78-year-old out of his shell time and time again and got him to justify actions during his presidency between 2017 and early 2021.
ABORTION, WARS AND PETS
The range of topics covered everything from the economic situation to abortion, climate protection, ethnicity, the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, the withdrawal from Afghanistan and health policy. Trump repeatedly linked most of the topics to his warning about illegal immigration and crime. At one point he took up unsubstantiated reports that immigrants from Haiti were allegedly eating the pets of residents of the city of Springfield in the state of Ohio. "Talk about extreme," Harris said mockingly of the claim, which has been rejected by local authorities.
Overall, the debate did not reveal much new in terms of content. As usual, Trump threatened China in particular with tariffs on electric cars, for example, warned of a third world war and repeated his promise that if he won the election, he would end the war in Ukraine before he was sworn in. He accused Harris of being a Marxist and hating Israel - which she promptly denied - and he reiterated his false claim, which he has been making for years, that he did not lose the election to Biden in 2020.
TAYLOR SWIFT FOR HARRIS
Harris promoted herself as a candidate who could unite the deeply divided country and lead it into a better future. Even more than Trump, she wanted to use the more than 90-minute debate during prime time in the US to introduce herself to millions of viewers. While Trump is known throughout the country, Harris has only really been in the spotlight since Biden's withdrawal. Both candidates must try to convince undecided voters before the election in early November. In polls, Trump and Harris are roughly neck and neck, which is why a close race is expected in which every vote will count. Harris received celebrity support after the debate: pop superstar Taylor Swift spoke out in favor of the Democrat.
