US inflation is down slightly to 3.4% and everyone is panicking.
The media and the Fed are busy saying inflation is sticky and there is a serious inflation problem.
But is inflation actually bad? What’s driving current inflation in the US? Are high interest rates helping?

Inflation is far more harmful to individuals than a collapsing stock or property market because it directly affects people's cost of living, which they immediately feel. It is not surprising that the current market sentiment is extremely pessimistic. In today's economy, assistance is critical if we are to survive.

I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Abby Joseph Cohen. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.

Inflation is the rate at which prices change. After having had inflation for a time prices remain up even though inflation is down. There has to be a deflationary period following the inflationary period for the prices to come down again. This can mean recession, if the FED is overdoing it.

Inflation has not been slowing down. Gas prices up, Insurance up, rents up, car repair up, restaurant prices up, internet service up, eggs up, frozen pizza up, soda up, potato chips up. I could go on. Things that every day Americans purchase are still being inflated. The cheapest oil filter from Walmart went from just over $3 to now over $6.That happened in the last 6 months. But I think The closing of so many stores/restaurants, poor outlook for McDonalds/Starbucks and growing layoffs may be a sign that the recession is already here and that should put downward pressure on prices in the coming 12 months. So there is some hope for lower prices in the future. There are so many so called experts out there that claim that inflation is solely liquidity driven? Like supply side and demand side inflation doesn't exist. They'll see in the coming months what happens to prices as consumer demand drops and businesses try to fight falling prices with lower production. The car industry is already doing this with layoffs and producing less cars as new car lots are filling up for most brands.

I'm an American who owns his home outright. Sasha says I'm "not actually paying anything" for my home. (About 6:17 of the video ) NO! NO! NO! NO! We have local and state property taxes here in the US, and they are usually significant, and they are increasing significantly. Local property taxes are far and away my single biggest expense. My property tax bill was alarming until I managed to apply some breaks (exemptions) due me because of my age and income. Property taxes are used to pay for police, firefighters, education through high school, garbage (trash) removal, and other local administrative functions. In metropolitan America, so for most Americans, local property taxes are a significant expenditure that is growing quickly and should be part of the measure of inflation if they are not already.

I agree with your points overall, but I'm not sure if the USA economy is doing great. Consumer indebtedness is creeping back up. The percentage of USA credit card debt in delinquency is almost where it was before the Global Financial Crisis. The prct of people with delinquent credit card debt is > 10%, where it hasn't been since ~2005. Some huge companies reporting earnings have declining sales -- e.g., Home Depot and Starbucks. Are we on the verge of recession? Probably not. However, consumer debt is high, and corporate taxes will likely rise in 2025 because government debt in the USA is high and unsustainable. Rising indebtedness and taxes will likely lead to flattening consumer spending and declining GDP growth. I have no idea if we'll have an actual recession, but if we don't, I'd personally bet that GDP growth could be low for a couple years or longer. It may not slow down until 2025, but it likely will by the end of 2025 if not earlier.

They need to increase rates. Inflation has been holding >3% for 11 months, since June '23; 50-70% higher than the target rate of 2%. Last time we saw rates at 2% was 38 months ago, March of 2021. Even if you believe CPI is accurate and the substitution effect doesn't artificiality hold it down, the cumulative effect over the past 3 years is crushing people and the real rate is higher than the headlines show. Middle class, people with houses, and younger folks who can increase their debt capacity may feel it to a lesser extent; but the most vulnerable fixed income people and lower class renters are getting killed. After such a run of inflation, 0% of a little bit of deflation would be welcome; I don't think deflation would slow down long-term borrowing very much.

Many in the comments don't know what inflation is. Inflation is the RATE by which prices change. So while that rate can go down, prices can stay up. Think of inflation as acceleration and price levels as velocity. It first requires a deflationary phase for the prices to go down again, which is why the FED raises the interest rates. Clearly more expensive credits must mean slower economic growth. But if they overdo it, they risk a recession. Obviously they are willing to take that risk.

As the market closes at an all-time high today, would you care to make a video explaining why you have been forecasting an imminent economic collapse and stock market crash for at least the past two years, why your call has been wrong to date, and what’s different today?

Now that the supply shocks are behind us, food prices have dropped. The supply shocks csused a shortage of car production, leading to price gouging (and excessive profiteering), which lead to higher insurance costs. I don’t doubt that insurance companies have also taken the opportunity to grab some extra profits, too. But why did my homeowners insurance cost go up?

Sorry shit has not gone down. A Tacoma is now $65k. My food didn’t get cheaper at all. Rent has not got cheaper. Gas has not got cheaper. Bills have not become cheaper. I haven’t looked but I don’t believe a Gucci bag is now half off 😂 Nothing is cheaper. It’s the same price … it’s still elevated and draining people by 1,000 cuts.

@@SchmozzleGTOPrices can be reduced by the companies that grossly overcharge people. Just look at average car. There is no reason for such high prices but greed. Economy stagnation and shrinkage cause deflation, not the companies pricing things at fair value. Creation of Walmart or Costco did not cause deflation.
@SchmozzleGTO

@@Timur474 of course things can be discounted... comment above states 'nothing is cheaper'- why would anything be cheaper in an inflationary environment? My point is disinflation is not deflation, so why is comment anticipating lower prices?

Fintwit posting these videos stating that inflation is finished and we need to cut rates is quite entertaining. Its the accumulated inflation in the system that is bankrupting consumers. The monthly CPI printing 2%,3%,4%, only adds insult to injury. The FFR and mortgage rates are fine. Prices need to come down. Recession and deflationary bust is the only efficient way to do this. The FED knows.

The insurance market is famously opaque so no surprise that they are ripping off consumers. It's baffling that the Fed policy uses interest-rate related factors in the CPI, talk about chicken and egg.

There’s always money to be made. When all the prices across the board go up profits are made as businesses round prices up and blame it on inflation. When inflation goes down borrowing goes up and money is made through leveraged investments. Look at Berkshire Hathaway they’re talking advantage of higher interest rates by locking in the gains by buying t bills.

Isn't the problem that there is so much debt, and that the price level rises in response to a decrease in faith in the ability to pay back that debt?

Despite of all you said, which I partially agree with, inflation is here and still sticky. If fed would follow your logic reducing interest rate close to 2% right now then current inflation rates would probably double, and corporations will increase prices putting even more strain on an average American who already sees that everything is grossly overpriced.

Shelter costs are not coming down. There continues to be a housing shortage in the U.S. It’s exacerbated by higher interest rates that discourage people from selling and moving, especially baby boomers who may want to downsize. Housing costs are also not just about mortgage rates. Property taxes are going up, and homeowner’s insurance is going up even faster. Wages are not keeping up with elevated costs of everything, so while inflation may be down, the prices are not. All of this is putting major strain on family budgets, and demand for everything will eventually fall as will the American economy that relies on consumer consumption for three quarters of its GDP.

Nobody is talking about unsafe cladding in properties and I dont know where else to go to raise concern about it. My brother has been massively affected by this in his Bristol flat. would love to put you in touch to amplify the story as 6 years on from parliamentary discussion about it, freeholders are passing the buck and failing first time buyers into an unaffordable mortgage trap . Do you have a public email I can contact you about it if you or anyone else reading this wants to know more for content ?

Inflation is compounded over time. Unless you have deflation the inflation is of course sticky. Even if inflation went two zero today still doesn't mean the prices will return too three years ago. It just means prices may stay as high as they are now. Maybe the only way to undo the inflation is if wages go up but good luck with that. Just remember we all have had a pay cut equivalent to inflation but not by the reported number.

First thing: Interest rates are not "high". They are at the long term average.
@jjrossphd
@jjrossphd 3 месяца назад
Rates will be higher for longer not because the Fed doesn't understand the data, but because the Fed printed 9 trillion in funny money which sent inflation through the roof. To get that money back, they have to offer a higher return. They also have to deal with out of control government debt and incessant borrowing. Treasury auctions are tough enough at these rates - imagine if they cut.

I keep hearing that at-home food is level or down but I’m honestly not seeing it on my grocery bills. And don’t get me started on away-food. Jesus. McDonald’s today is like what going to a restaurant used to be a couple years ago. We rarely can make it to restaurants anymore and we used to eat out quite a bit. A modest meal is now $50 with tip. It used to be about $35.
