This video shows the 8kHz FMCW sample of the US Navy AN/TPS-71 Relocatable Over-The-Horizon RADAR (ROTHR) was initially contracted to the Raytheon Corporation in 1984 with subsequent contracts to upgrade and support growing program developments. The system is reported to operate from 5 to 28 MHz and can be seen using FMCW modulation at 4, 8, 16, 50 and 100 kHz bandwidths and 32, 64 and 128 pulse sweeps with various Pulse Repetition Frequency. Power is a combination of summing ten 20kW solid state P.A.’s (each consisting of four individual 5kW P.A.’s) for a total of ~200kW feed to the high/low range wire vertical log periodic arrays. It is extremely frequency agile and at times has a three pulse carrier into burst as seen in the video.
AN/TPS-71 uses a bistatic transmitting and receiving system with remote command and control via the main Operations Control Center providing both sea and air surveillance sectors called Dwell Information Regions.
The term “relocatable”, was used to describe the generators, transmitters and receivers. Receiver array has 372 dual monopole elements arranged in two rows nearly 2.6kM in length confirmed via satellite image. System also incorporates vertical incident sounding for propagation management.
Some interesting over-the-horizon forerunners were projects: US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) MADRE; WARF; AN/FPS-95 (COBRA MIST); AN/FPS-112 and AN/FPS-118.
Signal received here in Fort Collins, Colorado by Northern Colorado Amateur / HAM Radio Operator Tyler Stampfli, KA0KA.

I don't know if comments are relevant after 4 years but at 3:50 I think I heard Navy Link 11: that "bert bert bert" sound. I lived in Norfolk VA and would hear that when I listened to shortwave, especially around 4 to 5 MHz, likely when the fleet was doing exercises of the coast. I've also been to the Northwest VA site where the ROTHR is located: I think it's long enough you can see the earth's curvature. The waterfall display of the ROTHR transmission at times looks like a facsimile signal. Thanks (belatedly) for posting!

This is the best record I can find for the ROTHORs still being operational. I had thought they were replaced in the mid 2000s by the Aerostat radars and the transmitters just left in place but this is very cool

Still active now. Recorded a few transmissions with that distinct 3 pulse burst here in lower MI.

ROTHER is still in service and is in use. The official answer is its used for Drug Interdiction ops in the Gulf of Mexico. Im sure they do, but I suspect its also used to detect any SLBM launches. just my $0.02 of course lol

Just found one of these up here in Minnesota last night. Crazy that I was able to pick it up! Love HF radio!!

I will be re posting new ultra high quality samples of the signal in all of its bandwidths, some are very rare.

I just finished this edit today! Also want to thank both K3DCW & N1SZ for their assistance on the signal ID!

This afternoon from outside of Kansas City, I picked up what sounded like OTH Radar at ~27.693 MHz. I saw several transmissions around 300 kHz above and 300 kHz below this frequency (occasionally transmitting within the upper CB band). I'm just using an SDR with a dipole antenna mounted vertically (each arm fully extended to 1 meter).

I shortly picked up squibbly sounds like these on CB, 27.185 yesterday.

I love hunting ROTHR signals and you have such good reception. I'm on the MS Gulf Coast and I don't get NEARLY as good reception. What kind of equipment do you use?

Taylor, great to see you are watching for the signal. I am using an Apache Labs Anan 8000DLE RXer and 280 foot loop feed with 600 Ohm balanced line into the station coupled with a Palstar AT5K. I will be posting high quality samples of the RADAR in less common bandwidths soon. I have 200 plus more signals to post so it will take time, basically if it is on HF it is here.

As a total novice, I'd love to see someone break down what the radar is doing in each pulse/scan. Different ranges? Different size targets? Different scan areas?
@SignalPhantom
@SignalPhantom 2 года назад
There are some basic universal concepts with RADAR however going beyond that is not going to be fruitful, much of this has to do with some advanced software that is used for signature reconstruction. If you want to see some higher quality samples of this system and others around the globe I will be posted those.

Back in the Fred Flintstone era of analog receivers, I would sometimes hear what sounded like bagpipes. I seem to remember someone saying it was either noise from an early fax machine or teletype

You just confirmed my hunch! I live about 20-25 miles from the ROTHER site, this on top of CODAR ruin my HF listening interest! lol

Where did you get satellite images? Know the coordinates of the transmitters and receivers AN / TPS-71?

So, when were these recordings made? And on what freq's?
@SignalPhantom
@SignalPhantom 5 лет назад
Most were made within the last week or month, you can see what frequency they are in the video. They hop all over the place, see the green text in the horizontal measure that is the frequency in MHz.

could i send you a few short recording of what i think is this radar and tell me if what im receiving is this radar system or something else like digital data packets? im in usa using an 80m dipole and a recent model quality sdr.

Hello, in time I will show about 50 additional samples or more, I have been very busy, over all there are about 300 or so high quality samples of signals globally on HF I have documented, only a handful are posted here. Can you look me up on QRZ? I can tell you what it maybe.
