Had a friend who spent ten years running a nuclear missile silo somewhere in the American heartland - never specified the exact location. When he finally left the service, staring at a nuclear warhead for ten years changed him mentally. He became a complete pacifist, never married, turned his back on the world and joined a Native American tribe on a reservation in northern Wisconsin. It bothered him that much.

It gets to the best of us. And he went home occasionally. Saw the sun. saw his friends. Had a beer. Imagine if he did it for 21yrs on Submarines like me. Im sharp as a tack. Dealing with civilians well that's a different story. Id rather work with military peeps over todays civilian. Freedom comes in different forms, some expect it, others stand the line and Defend it. Not for just themselves but for others. God Bless our Submariners

As a kid I was at the christening of this submarine and even went for a ride out to sea with my dad and the military brass. We rode on top of the submarine and then went down inside for a day out on the ocean. It was crazy to be a civilian onboard this monster of a submarine! My dad designed the crest for this submarine so he got invited to the private christening and launch of the sub. I remember taking a nap in a bunk, it was between the missle tubes. So crazy seeing the sub so many years later!

The Russian federation inherited a big number of their nukes from the old USSR. There is a good chance, that the Russian nuclear arsenal is as poorly maintained as their conventional military. It is also the only military in the world who puts effort into dropping food and medical supplies before during and after dropping bombs. We also have a history of defeating an enemy and then helping them rebuild and regain their own independence and standing in the world. For those who also noticed the discrepancy in Raddatz's report (at 1:46) that the _Maine_ carries 20 ballistic missiles after Vice Adm. Houston confirmed there were 24 missile hatches (1:05), this is because the Trident II D5LE SLBMs were removed from four tubes in accordance with New START treaty obligations. My research was inconclusive as to whether those four tubes remain empty (unlikely IMHO) or if they have been/will be converted to different loadouts, such as Tomahawk launch canisters (seven missiles each) or SLUAS drone launchers (?? UAVs each). If anyone out there has more info, please respond via comment. Thanks.

You need to think on it more carefully. Ukraine military has been trained by NATO countries since 2014. Ukraine is getting military equipment from NATO countries. But it is Ukrainians doing the fighting in Ukraine, along with volunteers from other countries pitching in to help. But if you put NATO soldiers and personnel into position in Ukraine to do the fighting, it becomes NATO against Russia and that is what NATO is avoiding right now. So no, it is not simple semantics. The difference is very real.

what irresponsible words. America is not at war with Russia. America has no business in further escalating wars. Most of the public does not want to be involved in another Iraq. You would rather have American troops be sent to Ukraine and provoke Putin to launch nukes all over your country, how old are you ? Such irresponsible way of thinking is the reason why America has either started, escalated, facilitated or funded wars and it has got to stop. Good thing is , all great power and empires eventually weaken and become shell of their former selves. Remember Iraq Libya Afghanistan, countries that posed no risk to America, countries that were rich and stable and prosperous before America interventions, that are now destroyed and its people broken into dozen different factions. Saddam had no nukes and was not affiliated with Alqaeda he was actually fighting them as they were a threat to his regime. sometimes the lesser evil is to leave sovereign countries with dictators alone, especially when its people never asked for your destructive interventions. Its not like Saddam had a military capable of invading the US let alone wanted to. neither did Qaddafi neither did bashar al Assad who is only in power today because a much more significant amount support him and fought for the Assad government then those rebels armed and trained by the CIA who committed treason against the state of Syria. Rebels who the CIA admitted to having armed and trained who ended up being not moderate rebels but Muslims fanatics who imposed sharia law were ever they went. Most of the weapons America sent to Syria ended up being sold to ISIS just like the majority of weapons sent by america to the middle east. you guys need to think about staying on US soil and defending US soil that is it, its not like anyone will invade the US anytime soon you have the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons for christ sake.

If my uncle Pete were alive today, he would give a standing salute to the young men and women serving aboard this nuclear submarine. In fact, his brother, my uncle "Jim" was a nose gunner on a B-24 bomber. A similar airplane that Gen. Jimmy Stewart flew as the leader of a similar bomber squadron. My dad flew as a flight engineer on a PYB submarine hunter during WWII along the coast of Florida and looked out for German U-boats in order to protect the U.S coastline from harm. Yeah, I'm bragging, but I come from a family of WWII heroes. I can only hope I can approach their courage if necessary. I'll be there with you, Dad, and uncle Pete and Jim. I'm ready to give my life for my country, even though I'm too old to serve in the U.S. military. I applied during the Viet Nam war to be a pilot for the Air Force and the Navy, but the timing was too late, the war was over even when I was of age. I still have my LTC in my State and within my church, just in case a bad guy enters and starts shooting at young kids and their parents. I will do what I can to help save innocent lives. I hope my church has a plan to save innocent lives, but I doubt it. Why shouldn't church-going members have permission to carry concealed weapons in order to protect against the unexpected? Every church must have a trained team to prevent this stuff from happening from now on. We should not have to wait for permission from the Pope, sitting in Italy, in order to allow us to carry defensive handguns. Dear Holy Father, please get off your liberal global elitist seat and think about the people in the U.S. instead of your "new world order". We, the People of the United States, do not take orders from the "new world order' authorities. We are citizens of the United States of America and will forever be.

Crazy That Sub can take out any nation on earth on its own. 24 ICBMs with 4 or 5 H-Bomb warhead each.

The USS Maine is an “Ohio Class” submarine. There are 18 Ohio Class submarines. Think about that. That’s a lot of firepower!

@@user-ew3dm1jq6j Their are 14 Ohio class SLBMs. the other 4 were converted due to SALT treaties. Also due to SALT treaties, I don't think all the subs carry a full 24 Trident 2 missiles and 4 warheads is the limit per missile. However, the potential for more is great, however due to SALT treaties the US don't have that much warheads available to load them all to capacity. I really don't think you need all of them to destroy civilization anyway.

can you further explain ? you mean someone in the chain of commend would prevent the nuke from being launched ?

@@coshyno I believe he means that just about 50 people have to all be onboard with a launch for it to happen. So its not going to happen. Which is a fact.

@@braddawson4496 In the 1980's the Soviets demanded a launch from an SSBN on the grounds of a false alarm showing just 3 missiles inbound. The command made it all the way down to the Sub and was only rejected by one of the Keyholders who finally reasoned that it didn't make any sense that just 3 missiles would be launched. So no, the idea that the chain of command would not allow it under any circumstances is observably wrong. Under more strenuous circumstances and with more realistic threats, the order absolutely could and would be carried out.

@@slightlyirradiatedmuffin3257 your example proves the exact opposite if your point. Additionally, during the middle crisis an order was given to deploy a nuclear armed torpedo.. This order also did not make it all the way down the chain of command. As I mentioned it takes more than they key holder, it takes more than the CO, the launcher, and the MCC.. It takes essentially every single watchstander to carry out such a strike.
