The Powerball lottery jackpot in the United States has reached a record this week - $800 million - sending sales skyrocketing all across the nation. While it's said that you have a better chance of being hit by lightning than of winning the Powerball, ticket buyers are not without hope. VOA's Alberto Pimienta reports.

I'd take 1% of the cash and put it in several banks and use that as personal cash to do what I need to do. The rest would be managed by a financial team. Before I die I'd set it in a trust fund that is to stay private for 100 years earning interest. 100 years after my death it will be used to find my own public university focused on medicine and science.

I would say only 30% people will spend on the important things and 70% people will spend on the nonsense things. I would go back to my home town which is Philippines and I will donate some money to the poor there but I will be having more still I'll just put it aside the rest of the money.

highly disagree. Many billionaries have way more than whats being offered by the lottery. After tonight the lottery itself will reap more than the winner anyway. They always do! Thats how its setup. One winner after taxes should grateful to walk away with $300 million. And yes people i do recognize thats still a lot. Its still just a tax on the poor

+Eddington J depends on your state and municipality. I say when you win. Thank God. Keep your mouth shut. Sign the ticket on the back. Put the ticket in a safe place till monday. Research for a experienced lottery lawyer, accountant and estate planner. Have them connect you with a bank for a short term loan. Whatever you need to relocate very close family and setup new homes, phone numbers..etc. Then when ready claim your ticket. afterwards have the limo drive you to the airport to fly off to your new location.

+Eddington J for sure! And i feel since you have the ticket. put it in a safety deposit till claim day. Dont put it in your car or somewhere where its always around. And to protect yourself, depending on the final amount you collect, if you do not take the annuity, have your financial planner work out where your lump sum is doled out on a yearly basis to you over the next 15 years or so. This way you place yourself on a budget and allow yourself time to learn how to manage and invest the money wisely. Being a fool and winning never mix....in anything. I hope you win!
