Supply chains have moved out of China to nearby countries. Many of them are Chinese factories that set up manufacturing outside China to avoid import taxes.

China can't compete in a free market. The Chines EV companies are getting subsidized by the Chicom government, which give them an unfair market advantage. That is why they can sell low-quality EVs at a very low cost. 😁
US Oligarchs loved "free trade" when it helped them send our jobs overseas. Now that there's actual *competition*, US Corporations cry to Uncle Sam for another bailout.

American got used to calculator and forget how to do math with brain. Most American probably don’t understand tariff is a tax on American not Chinese. Currently there is no Chinese EV sale in US, but if the same tariff applies to battery then american will feel it dearly.
It's not who pays the tariff, Uncle Sam is doing it to suppress the sale with the tariff. This shows the US government wouldn't care less about its own citizens just to take a shot at China. It's sad for the Americans and they called themselves as the free world. 😢😢😢😢
China owns all the supply chains. China can manufacture products very, very efficiently. That's why it can sell to the world at low prices. How is this unfair trade practices? The USA is just making excuses. While China invested trillions of dollars on infrastructure, education, R&D, trade, logistics, and building supply chains, the USA spent trillions of dollars on funding overseas wars, building aircraft carriers, and maintaining over 800 foreign military bases. Where was the US infrastructure? Where were the supply chains? Both countries subsidize their industries. China didn't do anything wrong. In fact, it did everything right.

China can offer brand new EV for 10k, cheapest Western brands is around 40k.. So, its true that only a tiny amount of Chinese EV are in the US, but as you can see that could change easily with these prices..
On the contrary, I think it is utterly positive. A clear gesture to demonstrate to the world that Biden and his administration is under serious PTSD syndrome.
The west have seen China has basically become the lead producer and market for EV. And it's going to be very, very difficult for them to catch up not only in terms of technology, but in terms of marketing and sales. So they will try to retain their advantages in terms of fossil fuel cars and try to continue to battle it out in the Chinese Market with fossil fuel cars because they can't beat Chinese manufacturers in the electric vehicles. And then they would like the rest of the world to also delay the adaptation of electric vehicles and stick to more fossil fuel vehicles in which the Western producers have a distinct advantage given their long history of producing and developing these cars. And the government, the Western government, in particular the United States and the EU have now come up with all kinds of plans to sabotage China's export of electric vehicles. Now they no longer do they talk about free trade or fair market practice. Now they're saying that US is going to prohibit in effect, the importation of Chinese made electric vehicles or even Chinese made but made in Mexico or assembled in Mexico. So they will have restrictions on components. Components have to be made in the United States. So all of a sudden on the fairness side, one can see how ridiculous it's gotten. Now US is restricting Chinese electric vehicles forget about cilmate change, forget about carbon emissions and forget about fossil fuel pollution. We got to block the Chinese electric vehicles. Now Europeans are looking at doing the same thing on batteries or electric vehicles in China. All of a sudden the Green Party, those who got into their position because of their espousing Green or climate issues, all of the sudden is now wanting to restrict Chinese electric vehicles. Now again, this is if we win, if we are on top, let's have free market. If we are at a distinct disadvantage, we have to restrict, control or prohibit it. We have to use heavy duty to block their entry into our markets. Protectionism becomes a weapon. Forget about protection of the cilmate and the Earth. We just have to be on top. If we're not on top, forget about the Earth. This is really absurd. The more they restrict competition, the more advantages of the Chinese EV manufacturers will be even more advance because if you restrict competition, your own automakers don't have to work very hard to enter into your protected market, but they will not be able to compete on a global basis. And this is what' going to happen in the near future. The electric vehicle market i just don't see it fading away. EU and US can try to block Chinese EVs. But given the distinct advantage of EV which now already has become well-known to the masses of consumers in the world, just the Global South alone will pick up the slack and start importing Chinese made EVs. This will really enhance further development if the EV market worldwide. As you'll know there are many developing countries which don't have oil and have to import oil and have to import processed oil in the form of gasoline or diesel. Now with electricity becoming widespread among the developing countries, electric systems, electric vehicles will gain just in terms of its cost-benefit ratio, it will be even more popular, more advanced in the developing countries in the Global South. So the electric vehicle manufacturers of China should start looking at the Global South more aggressively and start building network there.
China should look towards the south. Because we don't want their ev here. In fact during and after COVID it was said. And then reiterated after Ukraine. That the U.S. was diversifying and decoupling from China. It was announced under Trump. It was reiterated a little more gentle under biden. The policy has not changed. By definition that means LESS Chinese products not more. And after review of our supply in the U.S. the committee doing the research came back with lists of things that need to be reshored locally or produced with less outside dependence. At the same time you will notice investment into China has also been in decline. This isn't going to change anytime soon. It's been a slow transition for a few years now. It may in fact only speed up if geopolitical tensions continue to rise. At the very least this should be a warning to American companies operating in China to prepare for a exit.
Before that America don't allow Chinese Ev because of National security. So if there is tariff being implemented then means no more national security from chinese ev cars???????
What is over capacity? Every country subsidizes its own industries, especially in renewable energy. Tesla is the largest producer of EVs, therefore it has over capacity and should be curtailed.
I really hope the UK plays this sensibly and does not follow what looks like will happen in the EU as well. We left the EU so we could assert our independent sovereignty, so this is one time where it will be tested. Our politicians are desperately trying to promote electric cars, but the ones we have are expensive and suffering technical problems. I back free trade. Let the best man win. Well done to China for being such a strong competitor that the US thinks it needs that kind of advantage to stay in business.
China won't do that. China welcome competition into China market. This way they can compete with the best therefore this will also upgrading themselves. Just look at China today, they lead in many technologies front.
For the first time in history, a particular region in the world tries to penalise the largest trading hub for importing affordable goods. The politicians aren’t the ones bearing the costs if the tax are imposed on the item, the people will.
Rule of law of US - impose unilateral sanctions as they wish , Protection of service men for war crimes - where American can commit war crimes and go uncaused Climate protocols - all declined while the world came together to act upon climate. What kind of rule of law is US talking about ?
The increase of the import tariffs to 100% for EVs from China is ridiculous and has escalated the trade “war” between the USA and China to a new level. It is pure protectionism by the USA which will hurt primarily the Americans themselves as they cannot take the benefit of “affordable” EVs from China which could reduce their costs of driving a car. China will not stand idly by as she too can increase the tariffs of American goods such as semiconductors and other high-tech goods or even reduce the imports of agrarian products from the USA’s farmers. The usa is so desperate that she has lost the way in trade, world politics and technology.
Raising the tariffs on EV's that people aren't buying anyway? I'm sure that will really hurt the Chinese economy - especially when they dump all the US Dollar bonds they hold.
It really doesn't matter if we have 100% tariff on Chinese cars. What's the Chinese dominate in every country except the United States the United States won't be able to export any of their cars because nobody wants them as they are too expensive. So eventually the American manufacturers will have to find a way to compete or just sell all their cars domestically because they can't sell any of their cars overseas.
It would be a much better move for the US based big 3 automakers to establish joint venture agreements with some of the well established Chinese EV makers. Chinese EVs could be built or assembled in the US using Chinese parts and American labour. Over the years the big three automakers showed little interest in making small cars as the profit margin was so low. Why not let the Chinese car makers have this share of the EV market and continue to make / focus on larger EVs with higher margins? They are essentially losing nothing. Doing this would put a lot of inexpensive EVs on the market in a short period of time which would accelerate the deployment of charging stations, service an repair depots, etc. It would also help to meet climate initiatives. This would create a win-win scenario rather than imposing mindless protectionism.

On 8th and 9th May, the meeting of the China-US Working Group on Enhancing Climate Action in the 2020s was held in Washington DC. It was co-chaired by China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change Liu Zhenmin and Senior Advisor to the US President for International Climate Policy John Podesta. China has released a readout which you may refer to. Let's quickly go over some of the details. The meeting recalled the discussion between the two Presidents in San Francisco and focused on areas identified in the Sunnylands Statement on Enhancing Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis, including energy transition, methane and other non-CO2 greenhouse gases, circular economy and resource efficiency, as well as cooperation on multilateral issues related to promoting a successful UNFCCC COP 29. The two sides shared the experiences and challenges regarding their respective climate policies and actions, and further expressed their intention to engage in related technical and policy exchange. The two sides intend to host a second “Methane and Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases Summit” at COP 29 and look forward to the China-US High-Level Event on Subnational Climate Action, to be held 29th and 30th May, in Berkeley, California. In that context which need to point out that despite its professed willingness to strengthen cooperation with China on climate change, the US has been hyping up the so-called “overcapacity” in China’s new energy sector and vowing to impose additional tariff hikes on Chinese electrical vehicles and solar products. This is self-defeating. It goes against the consensus reached in San Francisco on joint climate response, and more importantly, it will harm the world’s green economic transition and climate action. The US need to stop repairing and digging up the road at the same time, so to speak, and create enabling conditions for China-US climate cooperation and global green transition.

It is ok, they raise back. US are very clever. So is everyone. Anyone will retaliate. Nobody is entitled. The world is made up of various people. What u can do others can too.
China’s Electric Vehicles & new energy sectors’ development is a result of their strong technology, robust market and full-fledged industrial chains. China’s exports of related products contributed significantly to the global response to inflation and climate change. The EU keep stressing the importance of fighting climate change on the one hand and yet damage the global efforts to deal with the issue on the other. Protectionism does not solve one’s own problems. Protectionism only protects backwardness. It costs the future and results in lose-lose. EU need to observe WTO rules and market principles. China will firmly protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies.
What to do ... ? Knowing that Globalization may make America Uncompetitive especially Labor, yet after few decades still have not prepared for it, make use of Tariff as excuse ... But Who is paying for the Taxes (Tariffs) = Consumers If China selling less in America, there are other Markets ... BRICS, SCO, BRI with 4.6 Billion in Population
I understand the desire to bolster American manufacturing and American jobs, but… the last I checked, the climate crisis doesn't stop at any country's borders. We now need to get rid of tailpipes worldwide, and if that means allowing Chinese EVs to be sold in the USA… so be it!
tarriffs means US admits it cannot compete globally. US consumers will just pay for more US made products. There goes that 150k salary if you have to higher for everything eh
If China can subsidize ev then why US can’t ? We can start manufacturing outside of USA with low cost men power. Blocking Chinese cars is not solution.
Based on US logic, US subsidies are “investment in critical industries,” whereas other countries’ subsidies are seen as “worrying unfair competition”; US exports with comparative advantage constitute “free trade,” whereas other countries’ exports with comparative advantage are signs of “overcapacity.” There’s a Chinese saying for that logic, “The magistrate allows himself to set fire but bans everyone else from lighting candles.” Or, to use a US expression, “Do as I say, not as I do.” The US is essentially using the “overcapacity” narrative to kneecap other countries’ strong industries and practice protectionism and trample on market principles and international trade rules in the name of “fair competition.” This is nothing but bullying. The rapid growth of China’s new energy industries, including electric vehicles, lithium batteries and photovoltaic products, are built on continuous tech innovation, full-fledged industrial and supply chains and full market competition. China leading edge is a result of comparative advantage and the laws of the market combined, not by so-called “subsidies.” By contrast, in recent years, the US signed into law the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act to directly intervene in the allocation of market resources through direct and indirect subsidies totaling hundreds of billions of US dollars. It’s the US who is a big subsidizer to its industries. Subsidies do not guarantee industrial competitiveness. Protectionism does not nurture real business champions. The fast-growing Chinese new energy industries are what the world economy needs for green transition. It serves the interest of China, the US, and the whole world. US to abandon its hypocrisy and double standard, and not to make the same mistake of resorting to protectionism.
That actually might be a good thing for us. But I don't think it's going to happen. We are too global. Way way beyond isolation. We are basically global.
Jeffery Sachs can be depended on to provide an opinion criticizing US policy. I don't know if he's ever offered an opinion supporting US policy in the last 2 decades. But, let's just consider whether the tariffs are justified as "unfair advantage" rather than fair competition. China has already tried to dump cars domestically earlier this year, and there were reports that China was trying to sell EVs at about half price after discounts. That suggests US tariffs aren't excessive or extraordinary if the US consumer saw similar prices... a typical $40,000 list EV was selling for about $20,000. Without better analysis which might not be available in China's opaque data reporting it can be assumed that government subsidies up and down the supply chain make it possible to offer such steep discounts. The first thing to consider is whether anything sold at that steep a discount is normally possible. Wherever you may be, how many things can you buy that's marked off half price? Is that fair to competitors and would you buy an American manufactured EV for twice the price of an imported Chinese EV? That said, I assume that the 100% tariffs although likely doesn't apply to all situations. Before this recent announcement, Chinese SUVs have been selling in the US under the Volvo brand. The originally Swedish manufacturer sold itself to the Chinese manufacturer Gee about 10 years ago and technically has been a Chinese manufacturer since, although not necessarily selling EVs. By buying the Volva brand,, the operations and history working with the US regulatory agencies were bought, too and AFAIK hasn't caused problems. That may be the blueprint to enter the US marketplace without creating waves.... Partner with an existing reputable company that knows US requirements.
If the tariff imposed by the US is related to alleged EV dumping, then why are solar panels and batteries also subject to tariffs? Please remember, these three commodities have one thing in common, namely: green energy. Are there parties who want to defend fossil fuels behind these tariffs?
