On this episode of 'Combat Reacts' I review a video of a US soldier fighting for his life in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. I've formatted this series as an AAR for the public, not just some random reacts video. I hate to be the armchair quarterback, but if one video can save ONE LIFE, I've done my job.
My Background: I am a former Special Forces SGM that started my career as an 11B or basic infantryman, and became a Special Forces 18B weapons specialist and served 9 combat rotations overseas. I served as a Sniper, Assaulter, JTAC, TSE expert, Free Fall jumpmaster and more.
I served in 3rd SFG, 10th SFG, USASOC, 19th SFG, and the CIA as a GRS officer protecting Case Officers overseas. I have a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security/Crisis Management and I appreciate you all tuning in!
I own Fieldcraft Survival LLC, in Heber City, Utah where we specialize in teaching civilians to be prepared for the worst case scenario. First Aid, Mindset, Fitness, Tactics, Mobility, and so much more.

I took a round off my NVG mount in Afghanistan from around 200 meters, I was fine but it felt like someone hit me in the head with a bat. Those AK rounds have so much kinetic energy it’s ridiculous. When you’re in that heightened sense of awareness you see and hear things you’d never notice otherwise. Like you said, worst case scenario.

I don't know how much training can really prepare you for being dialed in by the enemy and rounds skipping all around you, missing by just inches and even getting hit multiple times. I wouldn't bash this guy whatsoever. You try doing better than he did haha

@@patwebster9597 I'm not replying and trying to make it a competition but I was in an a situation almost exactly like this one: in Afghanistan on a Mountainside, incoming fire, loose shale type of rock and rounds impacting around us. Training does help. Can't completely prepare you, that's what experience is for, but it does help. The difference is someone's decision making abilities. In my experience and in this type of scenario I think the best answer is to haul ass and reposition to a better location. About half of us ran/fell down that mountain side to cover where we suppressed and I called for fire and then other half was able to make it down. It may be slight armchair quarterbacking, but it come from experience

A study was done on police officer reloads back when everyone still carried revolvers. Cops that had been in gunfights on the streets wouldn’t leave brass behind because it ended up in their pockets. Sense each individual brass was worth 25 push-ups the cadets would dump the brass into a hand, stow it in a pocket and reload to keep from leaving brass on the ground. It carried over to real gun fights and actually ended up costing a few officers their lives. Same thing is happening with this guy.
@Deadpool-ODST
@Deadpool-ODST 2 года назад
I definitely agree. When I was in Iraq in OIF2 a lot of cool equipment wasn't developed yet, (Most companies were prior service like Magpul) We would use our cargo pockets like dump pouches and even sew in some elastic to help. This is why when I went into the civilian sector I invested into a nice dump pouch and trained with it. By the time I'm half way through my mag (ADHD Brain, I count my rounds) I already have the next mag in hand ready to go. Grab, pull, insert, fire. then I have time to get the mag in the pouch. Videos like this remind me how the Military let the ball drop in some areas. I am definitely glad this guys equipment saved his life.

I remember watching this video in our team TOC about a day after it happened. Actually met the guy who survived this (in passing to the latrine and "dfac" connex not personally). The AAR revealed this was a mostly preventable scenario due to bad METTC considerations and element separation leading to some of them being stranded on that hillside. I was only a normal 11b 240 gunner that just happened to be staying in the same COP at the time attached to SOTIF as part of the VSO program. So no I never went to SWIC before someone accuses stolen Valor or something stupid like that. But my time attached to SOF did widen my perspective on some of the deficiencies of big Army. On the note of the reload that is big Army 11b doctrine right there to stow the mag even on a Bolt lock. It's stupid but it's part of the training scars and doctrinal dinosaurisms of big army in short. I only ever ditched mags when attached to the teams due to the teams not treating mags like the big army did. When I was with big army you were issued 7 mags and that was basically the only 7 mags you ever had unless you bought some pmags or usgi mags yourself with your own money so guys who never bought spares held onto their mags like it was life and death. Another reason was part of the older school of thought that leaving behind mags leaves potential booby traps for follow on forces like what sometimes happened in Vietnam and could betray previous OP and patrol base positions. You can argue how dumb or outdated the reasoning is or how dumb the lack of resources to have spare mags is but reality is that when you're pfc or pv2 joe snuffy your opinion doesn't matter and you do as your told even if it is scientifically deemed as completely stupid. If memory serves right this was around May or June back in '12.

@@Andrewdtucker2 as best as I can remember he was an 11b (not a support mos attached to that platoon) with the ISAF forces there but I can't give a definitive answer on why he didn't have his peq. In big army the peq is usually wired down or tied down using 550 cord. Now in his case since he had a 203 underslung most often the peq will be on the 3 o'clock position and not on the normal 12 o'clock position due to the 203 leaf sight taking that 12 o'clock slot. But since he had a tac light in the location where his peq would have been I have no clue. One answer could be that he didn't like his tac light interfering with the tube release latch for his 203 on the 9 o'clock side so he most like stowed his peq tied down to his ruck or handed it over to an "Adult" for accountability of a sensitive item. Removing his peq off his rifle could or could not be one of the many symptoms of larger problems with lower to mid level leadership at the time. Now I won't talk massive crap about fellow grunts but there were many doctrinal, SOP, and TTP problems with many ISAF units over there especially in the '11-'12 time period.

As it was explained to me by a Vietnam Vet that did 3 tours. You better be looking for somewhere to take what ever cover is available every time you take a step. "Have a plan and be ready to take what ever cover that available" Then get into the fight. It doesn't matter if you're on a hill side or in a restaurant with your family. Watching this video shows several things that could have been done differently that would have likely benefited him. Im not going to bash him for his mistakes. However hopefully someone pointed them out to him from his video and he learned from them. And that large bolder would have been my first place to move to, the second the rounds started impacting anywhere near me. Learn from your mistakes guys, Its God's way of giving you a 2nd chance.

I really like the mental breakdown part. Because those of us who have never been in a shootout,or injured, dont know what it is like as our minds start to break down, in the streets we cant call for help if criminals run up on us. Some of us would be lucky to get help in certain areas, and some people wouldn't get help because of certain stigmas or prejudices. Some that have been taken advantage of and the situation reversed on them, to where now they are in the victims shoes and learned not to trust people in help. So hearing the breakdown of his mentality as he was being shot at, that was awesome

I've never been in war so I have ZERO critical things to say about his performance under fire here. I did empathize with him when he fell and slowly hobbled along after getting his footing. I've experienced fear stress that causes sudden fatigue for being in fear of my life a few times. By the 3rd time, I handled myself better and was able to think/act quickly and effectively, but my first time experiencing that type of fear felt very similar to how this man looked. SO glad he made it out okay...If you told me that was his first time experiencing that feeling, I TOTALLY get it. There's a light switch you HAVE to turn off in your brain and just DO the shit when you're that scared but it felt damn near impossible to gather myself the first time.

My unit commander was from special forces in the IDF and we'd always watch videos and break them down. It gives you an insight of what you should do, what was good and what was bad. We all learn from these experiences and having an experienced person walk you through is so valuable.

@@TheUnchosenOne in South Africa, corruption rife, the police force just doesn't have the budget to handle the crime. So citizens pay privates security companies to monitor their homes and do proactive policing. Some companies are better to equipped, have special tactic units that conduct operations and high risk arrests with police. You'll drive in convoys with police, into townships and do what you need to do. Alot of these companies have intelligence department and provide intelligence packages to police and then conduct operations and the police are just there as a formality. The police get to use private security resources and man power because they just don't have the numbers.

I’ve been watching your stuff for a while Mike, always intrigued of course. But only very recently did I watch your talk with Shawn Ryan on his show, and let me say after learning about the absolutely bonkers amount of experience you have, and some of the things you’ve been a part of, there really are no words I can say to express my admiration, respect, appreciation, for you, and my happiness that it seems like you’re doing all right, you got good stuff going on, and your experience is helping people around the globe. We need people of all kinds in this world to get to enjoy civilization. Doctors, scientists, teachers, homemakers, you name it. But we need people like you and your compatriots in a real way. It’s a shame that so much of the warrior ethos, so much of combat, so much of masculinity, has been co-opted and painted over with political bullshit. I think this slightly new world we live in where special forces guys like yourself, and DJ, who sort of wear their heart on their shoulders, while being the same man that’s the last damn person you want to find yourself in a fight with, is a good new world. Knowledge is power. And knowing what you guys have done, how it works, and how that can come around and be given back to support other humans today, well that is fucking awesome. That means that you are never out of the fight. Yeah maybe people know your name now and you can’t go kick down doors, but the fact that so many others are kicking down doors in your stead with your wisdom all muscle memory-ed up in their mind, that’s dope as fuck.

When I was in, I called out myself to my on troops and asked if anyone new what I did wrong and why. The best war-fighters are the ones who assess, adapt/improve and move on. The ones who die are the ones who refuse to take ownership for flaws and therefor never learn and improve.
