+Ken Otieno To be honest I think you're better prepared for work life when you do an apprenticeship (or as we call it, Ausbildung) because you learn the necessary skills and your rights in school. That's why the dual education system here in germany is great, too. I don't think students learn the work laws of germany unless they take a special class in it. But I could be wrong since I don't go to university and probably never will.

@Cthulhudesabimes 9 лет назад
Oscar Perla No, we don't. Most European nations have decent-sized militaries, heck the French, Italians and Germans alone participate in a lot of operations. And besides what would Europe need a bigger military for? Who would invade them? Only China would have the manpower and tech, and they're both far away and more interested in trading with Europe. US military is bloated, its size is for offense not defense and that offense has gotten us tangled in a lot of disastrous wars and defeats since Vietnam.
@oscarperla8652
@oscarperla8652 9 лет назад
***** here in the US, the military is HIGHLY respected. it is considered a very honorable path of life. it teaches discipline and grants you many perks and connections throughout the entire US. i WISH the Germans would spend more on military, so that the US doesn't have to spend so much on this "intimidation war" with Russia. the EU enjoys all these social benefits because they don't have to put so much of their GDP into military. imagine if the US sized down their military to the average european country's. it would still be large because of our high GDP, but Russia and China would run all over their regional neighbors, and make fools of the EU and US. just look at the Ukraine crisis. it was originally an EU vs Russia situation. but because the EU is so damn weak, it quickly became a US vs Russia situation.

Sicher Digger We have a conservative right-wing in Germany like this guy. He thinks in good and bad genes. US genes for him are good genes, because he was brainwashed by hollywood movies and pro-western press. Other genes are not welcome to Germany, because they are less educated by nature. It´s about the same like you think about Mexicans and lets say...Japanese And when I say that Americans are not welcome to Germany, guys like him pop up to defend the case and show how open minded they are. If I think that Russians are welcome to Germany and go comment on Russian Videos, this guy would be the first to fight me, stating that we only need "smart" people. But in fact you guys know that you are not necessarily smarter than Russians. It´s just the right-wing mind (for you this is republican I believe), that makes that difference in their foolish head. This is an intelligence level below zero. This is the consequence of beeing an American Colony since 1950 and all the secret contracts our governments have. You did well making Germany an US Market.

The language shouldn't be that big of an issue. Once you start speaking/listening to a foreign language you get the hang of it quite easily plus all your fellow students speak english as well. As a german allolw me to clarify the difference. You have to pay a administration fee of 200-300€ per semester which in turn allows you to use university facilities like libaries and usually includes a semesterticket that allows you to use public transport for free. however you have to pay for rent, food etc yourself so most students get a part time job. You also need to have health insurance, but im not sure how this works with forigne students. for germans insurance is mandatory and you get insured by your employer or your parents insurance if you havent worked before. hope this helps

Germany has free tution, however in Germany: College presidents as well as staff do not get salaries of hundreds of thousands of dollars as well as of millions of dollars. American universities are easy to get into, but more difficult to stay in. That's why the drop out rate in Germany is considerably less than what the drop out rate is in the United States. The reason for that is, Universities in Germany will only acccept students who can score at least 1100 on an SAT test. (Press Read more) They save money by not letting people in there who don't belong there. German students and educators have gone to American universities. They see that it's a circus type of atmosphere. There are no scholarships for cheer leaders in German universities as well as scholarships for athletes. There are no sports programs. The average university in the US loses money every year on their athletic programs. Germany is old fashioned. They believe that a university is for learning. There is very little next to no crime in Germany in comparison to the US. There's no need for campus police.

Just so you fellas know, same thing applies to Austria. It's basically the same country, just with more mountains, funnier accents and a shitload of cows. Holy shit so many cows. Still Education is free, Healthcare is aswell, public transport is free as long as you are school or university. You get housing benefits, have a fixed minimum income (meaning if you only earn 400€ a month the state pays you the rest until you have your 830€). I for one have a side job as a paramedic, earn almost nothing. The state pays me my 800€ a month, pays my rent and public transport. Why that system works? Because I will be paying for the next generations education, housing and income with my taxes when I have my degree. Its a beautiful system, we just rely on each other. Greetings from Vienna.

Admittedly I am a bit annoyed by calling such an investment free. The German society invests in young people by offering education and pays for this education. When these students graduate some will stay, get a well-paid job or open a company. So they will contribute to the system and also pay for the education system. But I wonder how US students deal over here with things like that we do not care much for micro aggressions and that there are no trigger warnings? ;-)

Canada is a better deal - they offer the same benefits except you still pay tuition that is a fraction of the rates in the US. Add to that Canada has higher wages and is more immigrant friendly so American English speaking students can easily find part-time work to help pay for their education. It is also easy to get permanent residency in Canada if you are an American with completed Canadian education not to mention the fact you can work under a TN visa (NAFTA).

Not only does the US have the most expensive universities, effectively the last two years of high school cost as much as university does. I say that because 18 year old Americans "graduate" from high school (without AP exams) at the academic level of a 16 year old in England, France or Germany and the first two years of college are at what other countries would consider high school level.

Whereas in other countries (Switzerland and i also think Germany) give the option to leave after 9th grade and do an apprenticeship-school mix for 3-4 years and have a full education and certificate for that job later. The problem of the free university's in Germany is that the professors main goal during the first 4 or 5 semesters is not to teach you something but to get rid of the majority of students, instead of helping them pass with good grades This results in higher dropout rates, harder exams and gpa with an way worse average then compared to other States
@Mangafan47
@Mangafan47 6 лет назад
That's a misunderstanding in some parts. German university education is based on the principal of self-work and self-discipline. In the US you get a teacher helping you with everything & checking on you; in Germany it's just assumed you're an adult and you go to them if you noticed something's not working and you can't help yourself. It's the students responsibility to earn good grades, not the teachers/professors to just give them out on sale. That's why the exams are harder & the drop out rate is high, as well as the one switching mayor after the 1st year. The idea of college education from US to Germany is different. Germans have a 2nd educational way through apprenticeships in some jobs you can study and in craftsman jobs. You can be a federal certificate computer scientist without setting a foot into Uni as well as a bank manager. In the US there just college or high school degree jobs so you get more pulled through uni, make it easy so everybody can get a degree. Right now Germany is moving toward that, but it's highly criticized since it devalues the degree.

@doromantea1903
@doromantea1903 7 лет назад
Yes, that is true. But then the amount of taxes a university student pays would never sum up to the costs of his or her university education. So it is the sum of all tax payers paying for the education system. Which I think is a really good system. I strongly believe that everyone should have the same chances to be successful and not reserving education for the already rich.
@bew7192
@bew7192 7 лет назад
You are absolutely right, Doro. The tax income of only the students in Germany is not enough to pay the education of all students. But since everybody's paying taxes, everybody takes a share. It's nice to hear that not every German (Ich nehme mal an, dass du Deutsche bist, richtig?) is so unsatisfied with everything. The universities in Germany - though I never visited one - are exemplary. Especially compared to other systems in the world.

@JamanWerSonst
@JamanWerSonst 9 лет назад
FYTJ What you pay aren't tuition fees, though. You usually pay a semester fee. One part of the semester fee is for student services and the other either fully or partially pays for public transportation ticket for the semester. Technically thats not tuition. In munich I pay 113€ per semester, 52€ go to student services, 61€ pay for a basic public transportation ticket(its only valid at certain times, I don't really know because I upgraded mine). I can get a 24/7 public transportation for the whole bus, tram and train network in munich for an additional 155€ per semester(6 months). Thats extremely cheap. Normal price for a ticket like that is 70€ a month. So my overall costs are 268€ per semester, that includes public transportation in the whole city at any time over the course of the whole semester. Also, free healthcare. Rent is a bitch in munich, though and its hard to find a place.

That is false. In Germany if you are a medical student from abroad you will need to do a few years as a resident before you can have a final exam that would then allow you to be recognised as a fully trained doctor. The programs "Fachhochschulen" are usually more practice-oriented (in english that would be a university of applied sciences) than those in universities, which are globally more theoretical. Still, the Bachelors and Masters you get at both are identical in value. It's simply a question of what you prefer. However if you plan on getting a doctorate (which is the equivalent to the american PhD), you'll have to go to university as Fachhochschulen aren't permitted to offer those yet.

I have 45K for my undergrad degree. It might as well be a million, there's no way ill ever pay 45K back.

Don't think this is the right path to follow for Germany. I come from a country which has the same plociy (Argentina) and everyone in South America comed to take free college degrees and then return to their country, not contributing anything to Argentina. Germany should charge its foreign students, but with the whole EU problem that are sure to face having free universities is a disaster wating to happen

Cristobal Costa we've had free higher education for a very long time (more than 50 years). So far the benefits have by far outweighed the risks. Also consider this: foreigners still have to pay their living expenses here, which means VAT income for Germany: 7-19% of all expenses. Finally, I don't think Europe and South America are comparable because Europe is still so incredibly rich, especially Germany. We can handle a bit of overhead, we probably owe it to our neighbours for ruining their economies. ;-)

Cristobal Costa Honestly, I am also happy for the people going back to their home-nation. Germany is a trading-nation, it depends on exporting their industrial products, mostly highly specified, all around the world. In special when Ingenieurs study in germany and got to used to the german material, where do you think they will look for supplies when they are back in their nation? When people go back, they are basically exporters of the german idea and lifestyle. If they go back, we have a foothold to do further trade.

"Every class will be offered in English exclusively" And that ladies and gentlemen, is how we won the cultural war.

I'm studying at TU Munich and I am a bit pissed that graduate programs are going to be english exclusively. Like if those students want to get a job in Germany they have to learn German anyway.. And what is wrong to offer it in two languages? Also the way some professors pronounce english words makes me doubt their ability to hold the whole lecture in english.
