If the Zumwalt would have had railgun attack and scalar energy beam defense capabilities, as well as invisibility cloak technology (distortion fields around it), it would have lived up to its looks. Unfortunately, technology was not advanced enough to fill the ship with what is really needed. And to use fossil fuel engines is absurd, like having horses pull a combat tank. It must have been that there was a strong fossil fuel lobby.
The lack of phalanx systems is foolish and the ship needs 4 front and rear and starboard and port. They're capable of taking out torpedos, and air craft. The laser can't do anything but reflect off water. While tungsten shells can cause instant damage to a torpedo under water it's like hitting a big rock at 50 mph., and sheads the outer casing flooding the battery pack, and electric motor. The torpedo is dead in the water. plus the ship can pin point the launch spot, and nail it with a middle in 30 seconds if the crews awake.

So many couldn't reach their destinations for days. All the crap you have to go through now a days just to board a flight. A bullet network would simply be another great alternative to driving or flying especially if you are a person who dosent fly. Yes i did fly when i went to Japan and was terrified. But i normally dont fly, too dangerous. I have to drive everywhere because this great country they call mighty, still, still dosent know a damn thing about highspeed bullet train technology but sure knows how to put a man on the moon to jump around and pick up rocks at a cost of billions. At the same time, the government just cant give up 20 billion dollars to wipe out homelessness or 120 billion dollars to put an end to hunger right here in this great land of milk and honey, amber waves of grain. The United States of America has no knowledge on how to fight the enemies right here at home, crime which continues to rise to the point where you have to be afraid to send your children off to school. How about improving the american infrastructure?
